Thank you for the great question that you raise. I left Illinois a long time ago and back then, it was a shotgun or muzzleloader only for deer state. The straight wall cartridge laws are great especially for whoever might want to go after the huge deer in Southern Illinois in Pike and Calhoun Counties. Over here in Spring TX, BassPro has the Ruger American Gen 2 in 400 Legend with a 16" bbl and a brake. As you rightly point out, the only ammunition is from Winchester at the moment. However, over here in Southwest Texas, it's little brother the 350 Legend has become very popular with pig hunters and we do have some large 300+ pounders that need to be shot. For some reason, the bigger 450 Bushmaster doesn't seem to have taken off though some dedicated hunters prefer to handload it for their own use or buy whatever is occasionally available. Perhaps the 400 Legend will be a good choice next year in case someone wants something bigger?

2 Points: The 400 Legend has just slightly more case taper than 350 Legend, which makes the 400 feed NOTICEABLY better than the 350 Legend in the Savage rifles. 2. The 215 grain Win Point Point load has been chronographing over 100 fps faster than the 2,250 on the box out of 20”barrel Savages. Not to slight the 350 Legend, but, IMHO, the above points are practical advantages over a .350.

If IL would allow the 30-30 win, they would say, you could only use it if you stand on one foot, and one hand behind your back, usinging your non dominate eye.
Instead of the straight wall rule, put a limit on velocity. Problem solved.
@Hill_Billy_Without_A_HillАй бұрын
Goofy isnt it. Even in IN, it was pretty weird on regs before it got better. IL dont usually get better on anything though. Even when courts rule not in their favor, they still just do whatever they want with no consequences.

From Michigan I drive 3 hours north and hunt public land. I do it to use my 30-06 and to give them the finger. How smart is it to have a guy on public land with a 30-06. I do however know the area I hunt very well. My grandparents lived two plots down for years that's where I spent a lot of time.

In my humble opinion the 350 Legend makes for one of the best hunting catridges ever if used from a pistol like the CVA Scout pistol. The 350 actually has better ballistics than the 44 MAG. A very highly overlooked pistol cartridge that'll handle pretty much any North American big game as long as you practice, practice and practice some more ! As far as straight wall rifles i think ill stay with the 450 Bushmaster and 45-70 Government where legal. Give handgun hunting a try in the straight wall states ! You might be surprised..

I was excited when the .400 Legend came out. It's a cartridge designed to fit into a AR style modern sporting rifle. But as of today I have not seen it offered in anything other than bolt action and single shot guns. I know that after market barrels for AR type rifles are available in .400 Legend. But no major manufacturer is building a AR type rifle for the .400 Legend.

Good round (so far, at my range shoots)......ammo is scarce at best right now. If you find some, you better get you a few boxes. I love it, and you can feel the in between difference of the 350-400-450...I have it in Ruger, and on paper out to 150 yards, I'm shooting under 1 inch groups....But like I said, ammo is scarce, and no one is addressing it. Winchester is the only company making the round. Hopefully after this upcoming deer season, it's "reason", will gain some momentum. I have a 350 Legend (by default), I got rid of my 450 legend to my brother when I purchased the 400 legend. It's definitely not as "Jolting" as my 450 was, Yet it has a little more kick than my 350 legend. I will hunt with it this upcoming season, and hopefully be able to do a review on it.

I would not recommend anyone stock up on Winchester ammo any time soon... The most unreliable, inconsistent ammo available in 2024. I wouldn't even consider a 400 legend until other ammo manufacturers jump on board !!!

.400 is interesting, but as a reloader, I dont need ANOTHER caliber cause I literally have or load everything else. Current .400 bullet selection (pistol) for those velocities arent idea either if you want to load to full potential. Even cast bullets arent gas check types either. Then, in general, all these new cheapo, plastic stock savage, ruger, mossberg , etc bolt guns are such trash now compared to bolt guns of the past. Zero appeal except but possibly in an Encore barrel or an AR build for Hogs.

400 legend is a deal with winchester and savage. That's why winchester is the only ammo . You csn reload and load anything 10mm or 40 cal in them.

If you need more than one shot with a .400 Legend you need to become a more responsible hunter. Do you think muzzleloader hunters routinely loose deer? I never have wounded and lost a deer. I know plenty shotgun deer hunters with two in the magazine that routinely wound and loose deer and think it's ok. Of course a woodpecker may fly in the bullet path just as you pull the trigger, so I guess knowing where your gun shoots really isn't necessary, right? I am with you though on the one round straight wall issue. Afterall, he aforementioned shotgun hunters can use 3 straight walled cartridges in the gun, so why not? I'm thinking the shotgun slug ammo makers may have something to do with it.

How high does it shoot sighted in at 100 yards back to 50 yards?
I like the 400 Legend; unfortunately, I feel it will become more like the Legend of Big Foot; many people have heard of it, but only a few people have seen one. If it does not catch on, I hope the 41 Great Lakes does. The 350 Legend does not have enough punch.

_The Turkey's Opinion_ did a whole series on possible projectiles for .400 legend, in fact he was so early that he was using a preproduction upper and brass made from 6.5 Carcano cases! As I recall, he got the best results with the projectiles from .45 muzzleloader sabot rounds, but I think some of the beefier 10mm auto bullets did well too.

It all comes back to social control . Confuse the issue, destroy the hunters enthusiasm to harvest game that is in conservation’s best interest. Marlin had the 444 Marlin out in the 1970’s awesome hunting round in their 444. Nothing new here.

There are only a handful of so-called straight wall states. Those states do not at all agree as to regs. In Iowa. you can use a .35 Whelen.

Why you would go with anything but a 357 mag, 44 mag or a 45-70 is beyond me.
A full length forty five seventy case is not Legal southern part Of michigan. So you have to cut down case.

Ohio won’t allow a .30-30 Winchester bottle neck cartridge but will allow the straight walled cartridges that does the same with a 3 round limit…. Ridiculous….especially in the South East counties. You can use bottle necks across the river in W.Va. And Ky…..People love dumb regulations.
