Iron Maiden has many songs revolving around history. I'd recommend The Longest Day(about D Day landing), Alexander the Great (about Alexander the Great's life), The Trooper (about the Crimeon War), Aces High (about WWII dogfighting), Paschedale (about the WWI battle at Paschedale) To Tame a Land (based on the book Dune) Flight of Icarus (from the story of Icarus).

The singer of Iron Maiden is Bruce Dickinson. He's now 63 and still going. He also is a commercial pilot and flew the tour plane you saw at the very beginning, yes Iron Maiden had a tour plane. Bruce also is a fencer, has his own beer. He considered one of the best singers in the Rock/Metal gendre.

Here is the meaning of the song. It is based on a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The Mainer tells his tale at a wedding to a wedding guest. They are sailing on the ocean through the fog and ice. The mariner kills the albatross, the bird of good omen. Because he killed the albatross a curse has begun on the ship and crew, they hang the dead bird around his neck. They are adrift at sea "Day after day, day after day, We stuck nor breath nor motion As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean. Water, water everywhere and All the boards did shrink Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink." (this is were the music is calm to signify the ship adrift, you hear the creaking). The crew start to die (4X 50 living men) The mariner wishes he died with the 200 men. The mariner changes his attitude and blesses the sea creatures, when he does that, the spell starts to break, the albatross falls from his neck and it begins to rain. The mariner sights his home as the spirits leave the bodies of the 200 crewman and the Mainer is left alone. "Then a boat came sailing towards him, it was a joy he could not believe The pilots boat, his son and the hermit." The mariners ship sinks into the sea. The hermit forgives the mariner of his sins. "The mariner is bound to tell his story wherever he goes to teach God's word by his own example that me must love all things God made. The wedding guest leaves a sad and wiser man." Now you know the meaning of the song.

I'm 52 and I've been a fan of Maiden since I was 18. One of my all time favorite bands, especially when it comes to really cool guitar solos in so many of their songs. I would recommend that you watch a lyric version of the studio recording of this song, even if it's just on your own time off KZbin. Just so you can really get the full story with clear vocals and instruments. It's one of my top fav's from this amazing band. Also worth a listen if you like cool guitar solos is The Duellists, and for high energy: Aces High (about the Battle of Britain in WWII). Just a few of their great catalog to explore.

A fellow 50-something fan here too, it's weird, I have also been a huge fan since 'Piece of Mind', and I was lucky enough to see them live in 2010, but it's only more recently that I've really come to appreciate just how good they truly are....

I have been an Iron Maiden fan since I was 13. I was 13 in 1984 😳, when I found an abandoned back pack on a stone wall near my parent's house while doing my morning paper route. In the backpack was a pair of bra and panties, a t-shirt, a bag with some green tobacco looking stuff (I was 13...I had no idea...lol), a metal pipe for said green stuff and two cassette tapes. They were Iron Maiden "The Number of the Beast" and "Piece of Mind". I took out the cassette in my Sony Walkman, which was Tears for Fears "Tales from the Big Chair" (still a fav of mine) and put in "The Number of the Beast" and got instantly hooked for life on Iron Maiden. I can never again listen to these songs for the first time. It was great watching you, someone of similar age to myself but from a completely different walk of life, react so joyfully to what I have loved for nearly 40 years. Thank you sir, great reaction 👍😎

For goosebumps still my tip "The Sign Of The Cross". PS: Maiden's lyrics are great and usually excellent to go with the music. You already know about Metallica: Master Of Puppets. My insider tip here is "Orion" instrumental and goosebumps again. 😅

I’d definitely recommend checking out Cardiacs, a now-defunct UK band that went under many people’s radar for decades, yet now have a much larger fan base, largely thanks to KZbin. For many people, myself included, Cardiacs changed the way they thought about what music could be. They certainly influenced many better known acts. There’s an extensive back catalogue to discover, with some very eccentric early videos (Tarred and Feathered, R.E.S, etc…) being the ones people often find first when searching online. However, maybe I’d suggest the ‘shed rehearsal’ versions of ‘Visiting Hours’ or ‘Jibber and Twitch’, which shows them, in a very different form, towards the end of their career. Tim Smith (RIP), their frontman and main songwriter, was a rare genius, eventually receiving an honorary doctorate for his work.

Another great reaction to a fantastc band. Funny you should mention Blue Öyster Cult...they were my favourite rock band back in my high school days. I had their logo on all of my binders/notebooks. I really loved their album Cultösaurus Erectus. Actually, the songs Black Blade from that album is my next reaction suggestion. It's so underrated and relatively unknown...everybody knows Don't Fear The reaper and a fair amount of people know Godzilla, but Black Blade never seems to get mentioned. I also really like the next track on the album, Monsters...it has a great jazzy breakdown part that's unexpected and fun to listen to. Cheers!

I remember when I was a kid, there were plenty of moms around me (not my own though) that swore that metal was somehow “Devil music” too. Funny thing about this particular song: what’s the message of it in the end? That we should love all things that God made. Yeah, really evil.

It's such a shame metal music had/has a bad reputation, I was raised as a Christian too but, although my parents thought it was 'just a load of noise' they let me listen to whatever I liked. It's ironic really that the drummer in Iron Maiden is a Christian so they're far from devil worshippers!! Glad you finally found them and are enjoying their music, the sheer talent of many metal musicians and singers is majorly underrated. Love seeing your reactions :) Subbed!

Yeah, metal has a pretty bad reputation but that is because some people are taking it literally when it actually is storytelling, often with heavy and complex subjects. Many people like it because it helps them process conflicting and weighty burdens and thoughts. It helps when you know you are not the only one having a hard time.
