@Karm G the highest building in dc is washington monument for that very reason. There are so many apartments alone standing taller than that in seoul. Traffic around Yongsan is a nightmare as well. We don't see that kind of military base in that scale in nyc.

Yongsam is not the most strategic post. For the last 10 years it’s been losing its value. And if war breaks out North Korea has 10-20K pieces of artillery pointed at the city of Seoul. That post will be flattened. Changing to camp humpfreys is the best choice we could have and did make.

When I was a kid and my dad was stationed in Germany, we lived in Erlangen. A few years later when I was in the army, it was strange to hear in the news that base was being closed. While I was in the army, we built our own tac site which was home for a while, but now that place is also gone. It's just a natural thing for military stations to move around as equipment changes, local population expands and moves, strategic partnerships change, and potential enemies change.

Cool, I just left there a year ago. Loved Yongsan. Seoul is a magnificent city! Halfway through the assignment, I moved my section to Camp Humphreys. Humphreys is a really nice, brand new, Army Base. this is a misrepresentation of Koreas general population and true reasoning. the majority of Koreans doesn't want them gone. not every citizen likes the presence of foreign military forces, but generally Koreans understand why. Koreans would like to have that huge spot in the centre of Seoul to be upgraded in infrastructure and be used for businesses and residents, since it isn't necessary for the huge base to be smack-dad in the middle of Seoul (Seoul and with that SK, is geographically small and needs every bit of space to accomodate its citizens). also, that base is geographically outdated, since skyscrapers tower all around it. you wouldn't find a huge military base in the middle of NYC, LA, SF or Miami either, would you? and just to clarify: South Korea can handle North Korea without issues. nuclear power can be achieved by SK quickly. the problem lies with the Chinese and Russian allies, which i think the US will have problems dealing with alone as well. thats why a united front, with the US, Korea, Japan, Phillipines, Turkey, France, India, Australia etc. is so crucial. each and every one of us would lose on our own

I served my military service in the Yongsan garrison as a KATUSA. I liked the ambiance of the garrison. Even now, I missed it. Everyone - American and Korean soldiers and their family members, public workers and contractors and other international members for UN Command - was like ONE BIG FAMILY in the garrison. During my year abroad living in Seoul, Yongsan Garrison was practically my neighbor. I even received their TV channel over the air. I got to meet a lot of good soldiers there, which changed how I (a Canadian) saw American troops overseas. With that said, I can see why the situation has become rather awkward. Yongsan Garrison was basically a big awkward white elephant in the middle of the city, and really did seem out of place. Although I'm a bit surprised they decided on Pyeongtaek for the new base. I kind of expected them to set up closer to Seoul, like just north of the city limits or something.

Yongsan base is located in a place like central park NY or Hyde park London. Before the US military a Chinese and later Japanese military base was stationed there since the late 19th century. South Korea is getting back prime real estate and is paying for the movement. The US is getting a larger base in a more distant location from the DMZ. In case there is a war with north Korea the US is in a better position, because the south Korean army will take the first casualties, and the US base in Pyeongtaek will be a base for retaliation. The protesters in the middle are just radical leftists or environmentalists there are in any country

N Korea's problems are so deep now, that i don't think Democracy would fix it. I honestly don't know if they are fixable; there is no historical precedent for anything like N Korea. It would be as if the Japanese fascists or the Nazis had been allowed to fester for multiple generations.

What I gathered from this video is that the base is being transitioned to accommodate gentrification in the fact that it's prime real estate in the area. If I am wrong, let me know. But I doubt it.
@Normalguy1690
@Normalguy1690 4 жыл бұрын
Shannon Green yes it is great real estate for the South Koreans it’s in their capital after all and it’s to risky keeping it their North Korea has huge artillery battery’s facing Seoul and if they do use one of their nukes you can bet it would be on Seoul this place is no longer strategically a smart place for a base.

the only crucial role the base played was giving an economic recession to america
@reeeems
@reeeems 4 жыл бұрын
the last recession we had was 2008, and it was caused by mortgages. To my knowledge we've never had a recession that was driven by a military base. If you want to find a government-spending-driven recession in the US, you have to go back to the early 19th century when the British pound dominated the world and the U.S. dollar did not yet exist.

@@AFPMPU "The Earth's line of defense"? LOL :-) Not in defense of the earth, since earth is not at war with any galactic powers :-) But seriously, the USA is the primary defender of those nations wishing to remain free. Is the USA perfect? No. Has the USA made mistakes? Yes. But, when it comes to defending liberty, the USA is the closest thing to perfection the world has ever known. If not for the USA, the rest of the world would be under the boot heels and enslavement of Nazi Germany, Imperialist Japan or the Communist Soviet Union. The USA is the only thing that stands between the subjugation of the world by murderous tyrants, dictators and oppressive political ideologies. Many hold great resentment and jealousy toward the USA, but when they are threatened, they come crawling, tail between their legs, begging for the USA’s assistance. And it is the blood of American men and women that have stained the battlefields of this vast planet, securing the freedom and liberty of others when they could not free themselves!!!!
