Oldhammer Banners and Shields

When it comes to Oldhammer, Banners and shield designs were a prominent feature. I love looking back and checking out the weird and wonderful often freehanded logos and designs painted on them.
Such designs would often take a multitude of forms such as symbols or lettering, to huge freehanded pieces of art work which were amazing pieces in their own right.
These designs, on the shields and banners would often be a key focal point of the miniature or even the whole army itself.

That was really cool to see, a true blast from the past and yes, it would be extremely cool to see hand painted shields and banners once again. GW once encouraged this, but it takes time and creativity, and most gamers don't have much time and want to play the games as soon as possible so this feature has fallen away over the years; sadly. My favorite from this vid was Fraser Grey's stuff, especially the Orc warrior with that stunning and gross looking shield at 13:28 and that was done way back in the 80s! Awesome stuff!

I'm having deja voodoo... When I started collecting, painting & playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle 4th edition Undead most people still made homebrew banners. I recall way back-in-the-day Ken from Upstart Comics and games played High Elves and had fashioned wonderful freehand banners made from 'cloth'... It blew my mind, yeah!?!

@@SnakeWorksStudio I 'distinctly' recall Ken's unit of High Elf Cavalry had multiple cloth banners though I don't remember how many. They were 'pennent banners'. He told me he cut out the shape from 'dish towels'; a dense weave that was common in this region and, in fact, I have the type in my kitchen right now as they belonged to my Grandmother; everyone had them in their kitchens it seemed? So, anyway, Ken said he drew the the shape and cut it out with scissors and then used 'white glue' to shape them and then based coated them and so on. Ken's were a lovely shade of aged linen and I dimly recollect a 'filigree' of green amongst other colours that I can't now be sure? Orange? I'm pretty sure there were three colours at least? Oh, and the 'filigree' may have been High Elf iconography et ctera?

I recently modeled on some banners for two projects (a repair job on a metal Dark Angels Azrael model, and a Gnoll banner bearer). Both banners were made from aluminum cut from a soda can. I'm still not sure what designs I'm going to use for them. For now, I've elected to leave them blank until the rest of the models are fully painted. I might need to do some test designs, before committing to the banners. One thing to consider about banners and the like is that the choice of visual tells you a lot about the army or unit.

@@SnakeWorksStudio The figs had so much charm and a less'' mass produced/painted /art work to the ''nth ''degree....i It didnt look so serious as it does now. Then it was wargamers figures for gamers...now it all seems comittee made figs for mass market.
