Exquisite and beautiful architecture. Japanese culture has always attracted me, so many commonsense designs and reasons for everything. I just love seeing the ancient with the new. The single-story residences would be very comfortable for the elderly or ill, probably no lifts in those days.

I lived in Tokyo for a number of years - specifically, near Ginza. Many a days I spent walking around the perimeters of the Royal Imperial Palace .

When I visited the imperial palace in Kyoto, I think I was 10 year-old and I don't remember most of it. I had visited Kyoto afterwards but there's no chance to visit the palace. On the other hand, I usually go up to the imperial palace for a running once I have a business trip to Tokyo. It's a shame that the most of the Edo castle was burned down by WW2. We can see its complete appearance in the photo book of old Tokyo. Tokugawa dynasty built their castle here in 1600s and they left this castle before Meiji period started. Thank you very much for sharing a great story.

However, the main castle keep, the symbol of Edo Castle, was destroyed in a fire in the 17th century. If there were no fire, I think it would look like today's Osaka Castle.

I visited Tokio and Kyoto Royal Palaces as well as the Katsura and Shugaku-in Imperial Villas in 2017 and my favourite gardens were in the Shugaku-in Villa. Simply divine ❤️

That is not true at all. Monarchism remains somewhat controversial in Japan with right-wing parties being more monarchist. Even Japan’s national anthem is controversial in Japanese politics for this reason.

@SenatusEtPopulusA There is no major push either from the public or Diet to abolish the Chrysanthemum throne. The reforms the Japanese want are for women to be allowed to ascend the throne and not lose their royal status when they marry commoners.

It's open to public when it is not used. You can reserve your visit through their website and you can even have an afternoon tea in the garden.

@ 君主制って王が支配しているという事だと思います。宗教と政治が一緒になると独裁になりますが日本は以前から天皇は政治を行なわず公家が行ったり武家が行っています。それが日本が長く続いている秘訣でもありますが。

i imagine royalty as not being "rich" in the usual way i imagine just having a huge bank account...isn'tit more like they live within an ongoing budget managed by others to fllfil a lot of functions and appearances. i'm sure they have input to make slight changes to suit their prefernces but nothing like going nuts with a hobby or throwing money around like a drunken sailor, or buying elections for social media 🙂 though royalty are probably accutely aware revoltution...

You cannot compare Western architecture to Japanese because u cannot see inside verses Buckingham Palace, Windsor, Balmoral, Hampton court u can visit and tour the state room and grounds there is no comparing

Japanese palace life tragically destroyed the mental health of two very intelligent and independently spirited women Empress Michiko and Empress Masako (the current empress and her mother-in-law). We've also seen quite a few princesses in the past two generations (especially now) say "no thank you" and renounce all royal titles and money, to leave the system and marry commoners. I love traditional Japanese art, architecture - so many things about Japanese culture. I hope to move to Japan some day. However, there is clearly something really wrong with court life for all of these women. Money and tradition aren't always a good thing.

Everything is strictly and minutely controlled by the Imperial Household Agency. Japan is a land of rules, seen and unseen. Be careful what you wish for trying to come here to live, which is nearly impossible. There are illegal "aliens" here, and they literally "jumped ship" and overstayed their visas. BTW the same fate fell upon Diana, Wallis Simpson, Fergie, Meghan, etc.

The Akasaka Palace looks grand from the outside, but none of the rooms match the elegance and richness of Buckingham Palace. Japan was never able to amass the amount of wealth of the British Empire. The central staircase and banquet room are impressive, but that's about it. Notice that there's no furniture in it. It's not set up for anything. The halls are all very plain. A comparison of the enthronement of the emperor in its stark venue and that of Charles III illustrates this point even further. It's true, however, that the gardens are magnificent. If anything, it's a case of apples and oranges, or quinces and persimmons if you prefer... In October I went to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Now THAT's money and power! The library alone took my breath away. Unlike these Imperial properties, you are not allowed to visit or roam. Getting into the Imperial Villa in Kyoto for autumn leaves is literally a lottery, though foreigners have a slight edge over Japanese nationals. I suspect the entry postcards are sorted by Japanese character names and Romanized alphabet. The villa up in Nikko is easy to visit, but of course, you have to travel up to Nikko to do so.
