I don't know---ho hum. Their PR machine has been making big efforts to get coverage in the Japanese music media because, like every Korean rock band, they know they can't depend on the domestic Korean rock market---there's no there there. They're so obviously imitating the K-Pop PR model, sometimes even the K-Pop look. That said, I can understand how people would like them. Then there's Band-Maid, Nemophila, Gacharic Spin, Lovebites, Hagane, Aldious, Trident, Bridear, Scandal . . . so much more musically interesting I think. Sorry, everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.

This may be long winded so bear with me. You say in your opinion RQ is Ho-hum. You also say they try to use the KPOP look and PR machine, but that is what flies in Korea. They need to use the resources that are there and work. You then go on to compare them to numerous Japanese Girl rock bands that are in a market that female rock bands sell extremely well and are extremely popular. So lets break this down realistically and see where RQ is at: With the exception of Band-maid, Lovebites and Scandal, (Nemophila is getting there)who can sell out large venues, the rest of the bands you mentioned play in clubs similar to the size RQ plays in. Band-maid is extremely established, been around for almost a decade and came at a time when Japanese girl rock groups were gaining immense popularity. They had the sound, gimmick and talent at the right time. They had to have there starting roots also so comparing them to Band-maid is silly. Lovebites: I adore this band, they are my #1 female rock band right now, but again they have been around for 5+ years and where formed from Haruna and Miho who has already gained popularity in Destrose and Miyako and Midori who were well established guitarists in Japan already, so to say this was a garage band that just formed and gained popularity just not true, they were already established and well known musicians in the Japanese music scene.. Aldious: MY second fav band has been around in various forms since 2008 and have stablished themselves also in almost 15 years of being around. But if you watch their live venues they don't play in clubs much larger then the one RQ played in in this video. Nemophila: Similar to the formation of Lovebites with Mayu coming from Lipstick, Saki already established as a great guitarist in Mary's Blood and Hazuki who was well known from Disqualia they already has a base of well known and respected musicians at the core of this band. Bridear: They are similar to Aldious that they have been around for over a decade, but have had various band member changes, but still sound great. Gracharic Spin: Again, been around in various forms with rotating since 2009, great sound still, but don't play huge venues either. Trident, Hagane are newer, and are similar in venue size and sales to RQ, they may suit your taste more then RQ, but they are not bigger, they are good(I follow Trident, not so much Hagane), but they have a niche following, similar to RQ. Which brings us the band I want to compare them to the most: Scandal.: Before you jump me and tell me I have no idea what I am talking about because Scandal is huge(and they are, I am seeing them in Toronto in 2 weeks) I mean to compare them to Scandals early roots 2006-2008. They were an unsigned indie band playing live in parks and anywhere they could set up. Watch their early videos and they are playing fairs and small venue events and worked hard until there popularity started to grow. RQ has over 166.000 youtube followers since forming their channel 2 years ago doing covers and now have of their own music to add to their discography. Their sound and style is extremely similar to Scandal in their Indie days as is the career path they are taking. Their single and mini album sold extremely well and was even in the top 5 on the U.S. rock albums iTunes chart at one point(the first Korean Indie band to ever do this). They are also selling out smaller venue clubs in a Country where rock has no following(unlike Japan where it is huge) and I can see them in a couple of years being on the same scale as Hagane and Trident in the Japanese market. Both great bands, but with niche followings, I mean lets be real, they don't play large venues. Might not be your cup of tea, but if you are a Scandal fan, like me, it is extremely easy to see the comparison of RQ and Scandal in their early indie garage rock band days(2006-2008) time.

@@dennisa4039 You're preaching to the choir---I work in the music industry in Japan and am quite familiar with the bands mentioned, having covered them and seen them all live (except RQ) multiple times, including most recently Nemophila on their Zepp tour and at Club Citta, as well as Hagane, GS, Bridear, and Nemo at Naon no Yaon. RQ are going K-Pop because that's what flies outside Korea, not "in Korea". It's precisely because there's virtually no rock scene in Korea that they're trying so hard K-Pop-PR-wise to break out of there. Basically I agree with what you say, although it's not accurate to state that the bands other than B-M, Scandal, and LB are club-level. In this regard (though there's no rigorous definition or clear dividing line) one might break it down (simplistically) to club, theater, arena, and stadium---examples might be, respectively, Eggman (where I'll see B-M before they tour the States), Zepp, Makuhari Messe, and Tokyo Dome---and I've seen all the bands mentioned play at least theater-size venues, which is to say they don't just "play in clubs". Interestingly, as I was commenting to one of Mr B's reactions a few weeks ago, the biggest all-girl rock bands the past few years in Japan, going by single and album sales, are the BanG Dream franchise bands---Poppin'Party, Raise a Suilen, Morfonica, especially Roselia---and they sold out Saitama Super Arena consecutive days, shows I saw.

@@otobokegaijin6218 I see RQ as the opposite of Babymetal. Babymetal was an J-idol act who incorporated a heavy metal sound to cross with the J-metal crowd. RQ is a rock band who is incorporating the KPOP look to reach that cross over stream. Same idea opposite concept. If that makes sense. I still see extreme similarities though in their style and growth as I did early indie Scandal days.

Is lovebites going to be playing again soon? I found out about them right about the time of Miho"s departure (how is she doing, anyway?) It was hard for me to picture what they would be like without her - but the others are so powerful that I figured they would come up with something. But it's taken some time, no...? In terms of RQ and the international audience - they definitely did not start with that in mind. The way they work together Korean groups makes me think that they def are not focusing on international to the exclusion of Korea. But they also pay attention to the international - using Spanish and English translators, and traveling to the U.S. for a show. From interviews: they were baffled when they started getting a lot of mv views. They were busking, basically garage band stuff, and started seeing getting more and more followers and didn't know how. They thought someone was pranking them, but found out that people outside Korea had started getting excited about them and spreading the word to friends. I guess the word is organically, although I don't particularly like that word. And this was pushing up their following by tens of thousands. Making 100k was a very big deal. But I think Old Mr. B is right to an extent, RQ is creating more openings for rockers in Korea. We're even seeing a lot more rock penetrating KPop, although I think Dreamcatcher with Leez and Ollounder should get a lot of the credit. There's definitely an existing rock scene there but I don't know it's dimensions. A couple of project bands came out of SuperBand 2 recently - really talented and can get pretty wild. Do you know Craxilver and Kardi (not Kard, which is a while nother story)? At minute 37:30 of their 25th anniversary show, Crying Nut brought Iree on the state to perform with them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmW4dKyZnqdrl9k
