My first car was a 1977 Olds 442 - Red - the darker red not the bright cherry red. Put a Holly 4 barrel in it and a buddy of mine upgraded the exhaust. I used to watch the gas needle go down when racing up a local back road. LOVED that car.

What an amazing blast from the past. Awesome car. The white letter tires were typical for car like that back in ‘77. I had a ‘74 camaro with white letter tires back in ‘75 and it looked great. You just don’t see the white letter tires anymore. Black wall tires however would kill the look of this beauty. The neighbor’s camaro rally sport is also a fantastic classic. That one was actually my college dream car.

Wow...what memories this brings back. I am a diehard Pontiac Guy....but during one of the Missouri winters (1983-84 winter I think it was) while I was doing a full restoration on my 1971 455HO Lucerne Blue Trans Am and needing a "Winter Beater" to drive to work....I bought this exact same color Olds 442...Mine was a 1976, had the swivel front buckets, Hurst Hatches (T-tops) and was a 455, automatic car. (I wish I knew then how rare of a car it was...I may have kept it). I actually found it in the "Cars Under $500" section of the Tradin' Times! It had less than 75K miles on it, but had sat for about a year and needed a new battery, fresh gas and both front and rear transmission seals replaced because they had dry rotted from the car sitting. I paid $400 cash for it, put my T/A's battery in it, siphoned out about a half tank of old varnished gas and put 5 gallons of fresh gas and gas treatment in....poured 5 qts of Trans fluid in it and it fired right up....and I drove it the 35+ miles home.....having to pull over and add 2 or 3 quarts of tranny fluid about every 10 miles or so. I really loved that car as for a Street Racing, Hot Rodding teenager....that car was "Class"! It had working A/C, power windows and locks, swivel and reclining front bucket seats, nice factory stereo, cruise control, tilt wheel and power steering,....all the things an early 1980's teenaged Street Rodder removed from their hot rod to "go faster"! 😉 And it greatest assest for a young guy....had a large back seat area! And being I was still living at home with my parents back then....I definitely peeled several pairs of panties off young hot teenaged girls in that back seat! 😁 (Had one bad incident that left a permanent "red" stain in that beautiful white interior that I never could explain 😏). If you guys think about selling this one of your Dad's, contact me with your location and how much you want for it.....I would be interested!

I even bought and rebuilt a Olds 455 and dropped it in. For a Michigan car, yes the rear quarter panels were rusted. YOU KNOW, A FEW CHOICE SPEED PARTS WILL wake that up. Those mid 70s Olds 350s had 8.5 to 1, needs to be raised.Earlier pre style 71 pistons would raise compression up, so adjusting what cam you get with Rhoads lifters needs to pay attension to during cam selection. A set of Rhoads lifters and a 230 duration @ .050s cam would be great. Also, GM always screwed up their exhaust systems on their cars.I want to know what are your engine plans in this. It probably got 2.41 axle gearing, I would look at 3.42 gearing swap from Summit Racing.

Wow, I bought a 77 442 back in 1979 in st. clair shores Mich. 12,000 miles for $3999. Pretty much a cutlass with decals on it. I wound up putting an old W31 replica cam in it, headers, a holly street dominator intake, 600 vac secondary carb and a very much needed 4.10 gear to replace the super tall 2.41. Last item was a vega 10" torque converter from the local junk yard for $45. 8.5 compression 350 with sticky mickeys and open headers wound up running a best of 13.87 at 98 mph back in 1981. Not all that quick by today's standards but in 1981, that was fairly quick. I put a 66 Olds 425 in the car in 1983 ...what a torque monster. Sold it in 87 and bought an 86 442, put a 68 Olds 350 in that car a year later. 44 years of messing with Olds engines. I still have that 86 442. Your 77 looks good for sitting all that time. Really brings back memories.

Very pretty color combo. I always liked these but unfortunately underpowered. Still, a great cruiser. I stand corrected, but the original 4-4-2's stood for 400 (cu.in.), 4-speed, and dual exhaust. Then, when later 455's were also used (and auto trans was offered), it stood for 400 or 455, 4-barrel, dual exhaust. In the 1977 form, it was undoubtedly a trim and wheel SE package.

Did anyone see the custom speaker box sitting to the left, bet you that ain't been in there over 30 years!!

Speaker box probably hasn't been. The house was for rent and has had multiple tenants over the past 30 years now.

If my memory is correct I believe that the swivel seats came from Monte Carlo options. Sure cleaned up nicely.

They were an option for the Cutlass as well

Swivel seats were a GM option not just Montes. Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Buick, Chevy, even some GMC.

i remember when they cars were new. here in the rust belt they lasted about 3 years before there was giant holes in the quarters. the mid 70's were a sucky time for car quality.

yeah, these quarters have been replaced luckly. I'm pretty sure most of the 70s cars have dissolved by now.

FYI: Swivel buckets we not an option in 1977 Oldsmobiles. You could get them in Monte Carlos on 77, but not Cutlass. Oldsmobile had this option from 1973-76. The colour is also from 1976. Great looking car though

The reason it sat so long was its anemic 185 H.P. engine..IF you ordered it, and a meager 110 H.P. if you spun the wheel and bought the one that was all dolled up on the show room floor. 11.9 0-60 18.4 1/4 mile a three legged rescue dog could do better. A 25 year old civic with a fart can exhaust would beat this "defamation" of a once proud muscle car.

Came within 1 phone call of owning that same car in '90-91-ish in Houston TX but it had rust holes size of which you could pass a jelly donut thru. Parents talked me out of it...good.on them!

What engine does that have? I had a 76 Cutlass Salon 350, but there was a Hurst 442 big block car at the junkyard and I wanted so bad to buy the engine and tyranny out of that to swap into mine. It was my high-school car and like an idiot, I traded it in for an 83 Mustang V8.

Had 1976 Cutlass. Ended up with a 69 455 out of a Delta 88. Junkyard manifold, Q jet, distributor out of 76. Headers. Kept the highway gears. Torque made up for it. Hard to touch on a roll start..

I'll trade you 74 camaro and cash. Lol. My first car was 68 camaro 396 4 spd. My older brother. 77 cutlass. He wasn't into cars more into. A/c and not having to always fix it. Lol. Our dad was old drag racer so I had fast cars that broke all the time. He went out of town with friends one weekend. I used his car. He did put cragers on it though. So I went to the street races just hanging out. At 16. The 12 yr old came out. Ummmmm my buddy dad had gas station he had keys. Up on the lift. Big screw driver big big hammer. And yay me my brother now has a good sounding exhaust. Oh yea. Monday morning was woke up to a brother who could beat up anybody mad to be tied. And our father letting me know I was paying for his catalytic converter to be replaced if I didn't go to jail for beating it full of wholes. Man great times. Oh after that he had a 80 montecarlo. Yep got great story of that to. Found out the limits to a 305 motor. Lol.

I found a 1970 Buick GSX in a garage with only 50 miles on it . The old guy just needed the space to raise chicken's. I got it for 500 bucks and a rooster.
