That was an excellent compilation, Piet! Thanks too for the great details in the description. I really enjoyed this video. These trains may seem common to you, seeing them so often; but they looked great to someone like me who's never had the pleasure of seeing them in person. I love the cab car design.

Hi Andrew and Martin, Glad you've enjoyed it. Yes, these metro's seem so common, one thinks they will always be around, like we thought of steam traction many years ago - I never thought of capturing steam in the days of old film cameras! Now I am documenting the end of an era with these yellow metro sets slowly dying away. The new metro sets are awesome 1st world up to standard stuff - the problem is that it will take a long time to have enough sets available - they are built locally under license with a set number of sets contacted per year. Here a my video of a new set arriving for use in Cape Town. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2Oad5Vpo86raqM

It must have taken a lot of trips and clips to compile all of this! Thank you that I could enjoy watching.

It's hard to imagine life without the 5m2A and 10m5,the 5M2 has been around my whole life.They've given me alot of happy and interesting memories but the new train sets that are coming are really nice trains,alot of positives about them.Really great video,that ventilation joke really made me laugh 😂

Hi Marval, Couldn't agree more! These metro sets have done a good job! We need a lot more of the new sets before they will make a difference, so a bit on maintenance on the old sets might still be in order - of only prasa can get their act together. The near total demolition of railway infrastructure during covid lock-down was a complete catastrophe, it does not help either.

As a small child I remember seeing these in the old brown and beige livery. In fact I'm told that I was accidentally left on a 5M2A in my pram and my parents had to chase the train down to get me back. These sets are so tired - the replacements are well overdue now.

Interesting story, but scary also.. pretty sure you weren't a bit worried : D

@@RAILFANinSOUTHAFRICA I was a baby at the time so I don't remember anything. All I know is that the story ended with my parents finding me at a station further down the line safe and sound in the office sucking on a lollipop - so a happy ending. :-)

Hello Piet, thank you once again for your time and effort in putting this compilation of commuter trains together for us. It was really most enjoyable. Sadly, the condition of the coaches just seems to deteriorate on a very regular basis. A question. Are the drivers of the main line trains (long haul), assigned these trains based on seniority, or may applicants choose between becoming drivers on the main line, or commuter trains? Many thanks. Groete uit Memphis. Steve.

Hello Steve, been aware that I still owe you a reply to this question! Thanks always for your view and comments (and questions!). Fortunately I must confess that I do not have the current reply to this question, I need to ask one or two of the drivers. Yes, in the old steam working days one had to start right at the bottom doing the dirtiest jobs like cleaning out locomotives in the shed, and then worked up through the ranks before you could become a driver (engineer in American terms). I believe these days one could apply straight for a learner vacancy on an electric or diesel locomotive, and expand your job grade by qualifying to drive other classes of locomotives.

Why can't the Cape gauge use third rail for electric trains rather than overhead cables? And do the doors on the train really work though?
@RAILFANinSOUTHAFRICA2 жыл бұрын
Yes, besides diesel traction, a third rail would be an alternative answer to the current problem of copper theft.

I am not sure about the ticket price, but it will be very cheap!
