Great compilation and tribute Piet. These sets have served Metrorail well over the years, they sadly were subjected to vandalism, corruption and so much abuse but they soldiered on. I've always been fascinated by graffiti on trains worldwide. Their seems to be an unwritten law that the art should be of the same design/font/style. Looking forward to seeing the new sets in service. Thanks for sharing! 🙌🏽👏🏼👏🏼

Thanks for the view and comments Brian, in full agreement with you about the old Metrorail rolling stock - must have done millions of kilometers! Also I am trying to work out the graffiti "code" - guess I am to much old school to understand what it means. These 5M2A and 10M5 sets have served South Africa well over the decades,hard to imagine life without them on our railway but they are too old now.Lots of graffiti on these trains,The new X Trapolis Mega might get a makeover of it's own at some point. Nice tribute video

That yellow trains are basically just a string of wagons of which some have an electric motor in, passenger seats in the powered wagons, awesome I think that is the most cheapest way by far to transport a lot of people, nice Piet

Sometime we fondly refer to these trains as a "Geel Slang" (Yellow Snake) Some background from Wikipedia: The Class 5M2 and Class 5M2A are electric multiple units that are used to provide commuter rail services by Metrorail in the major cities of South Africa. The original Class 5M2 trainsets were built for the South African Railways by Metro-Cammell between 1958 and 1960.[1] Most of those in use today, however, are of Class 5M2A,[2] built to the same design by Union Carriage & Wagon (UCW) from 1962 to 1985; a total of 4,447 coaches were built by UCW.[3] Although most of Metrorail's services are still operated by 5M2As, they are being progressively rebuilt into the new Class 10M3, 10M4 and 10M5. Class 5M2A coaches are stripped down to the underframe, which is then used as the base for the Class 10Ms.[4] The Class 5M2s operate on the 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) Cape gauge track that is standard throughout Southern Africa. The motor coaches draw 3,000 volt direct current from an overhead pantograph; they have a power output of 925 kilowatts (1,240 hp) and produce 158 kN (15.9 LTf; 17.8 STf) of tractive effort. The maximum speed of a 5M2 trainset is 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph). A motor coach can carry 56 seated and 110 standing passengers, and has a tare weight of 60 tonnes. Another great Compilation, I love all the arcing from the pantos, i noticed some sets were 11-coaches long, hadn't seen that length for a while. Also oddly I havent seen any metro trains the whole of last year, could've been timing.

Great compilation. Those 10M5 set sets have performed well for over 50 years now but desperately need to be retired asap. Allowing trains to move while the doors are open is a massive safety issue and those trains are very worn out despite the revamps over the years. Does anyone know if the new X'Trapolis trains are dual voltage 3KVDC and 25KVAC? Seems strange that all the new Chinese freight electrics we buy are dual so it would be a pity if the new stock was limited to the old 3KVDC metro system only.

Having all the wires pulled down sounds here in Gauteng like a great opportunity to transition at least some of the legacy lines to 25VAC - although it would mean accelerating decom of the old 3KVDC stock we have that never seem to die.
