Her wagon train was attacked by Apaches and she spent five years as a prisoner of the tribes of the Southwest. Near the end of her captivity, she was given the distinctive tattoos that made her famous.

I lived and worked in Oatman, AZ for 10 years in the '90s. That's not just ANY winding road...that's the real, honest-to-god Rt. 66! Cool to see this vid! A LOT of details I never knew before; really enjoyed this vid, thanks for posting!

To be specific the kidnappers/perpetrators were Yavapai. Probably Tolkepayas from the southwestern part of Arizona.

Mary Ann never recovered from the malnutrition she and Olive suffered under the brutal Apaches. She died of an illness while still in captivity.
