Ukraine's Oleksandr Usyk defeates Italy's Clemente Russo to win gold in the men's boxing heavy 91kg event at the ExCeL - South Arena 2 as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (11 August 2012).
Boxing made its Olympic debut at the 1904 Games in St Louis, since then boxing has been staged at each edition of the Games, except in 1912 in Stockholm, owing to Swedish law, which forbade the practice.
The rules have evolved since the 1980s: 1984 in Los Angeles: protective helmet obligatory; 1992 in Barcelona: set-up of an electronic scoring system to strengthen the objectivity of refereeing; 2007: standardised point scoring. Women's boxing will make its debut at the 2012 London Games in London.

Crazy that Russo lost to Andre Ward all the way back in 2004 in Athens, then beat Deontay Wilder in 2008 in Beijing, then lost to Usyk in 2012... crazy longevity for his amateur career. Not many, if any can say they fought Ward, Wilder and Usyk.

@@sebgameryt9180 No bud. He was Italian and top Italian amateurs get offered jobs in the state police. They got offered a good salary, rank and really good benefits like a great pension etc.... They are also only police officers in name only. In reality they don't do much police work. They just train full time. Plus Russo was effective and a good boxer but he was a spoiler. His style was effective but not always attractive. He would not have been popular fighter as a pro. And being popular is more important than being skillful as a professional in order to make money.
