games like these need to hit a very specific mark in order to get overwhelmingly positive there are lots of things that make people end up leaving a negative review, and for deck builders its very easy to reach that area, and only six games being able to maintain overwhelmingly positive after months and even years is obvious proof that if you DO hit that area, you arent leaving it

The STS board game is like, really good. I was skeptical of it because it was so close to the video game I was thinking "well what's even the point" but the cooperative element is like, actually really fun and gives it a unique and worthwhile element to it, it's smartly designed to be not too hard to track manually, and like. If you're familiar with the digital game already it's *so easy to learn.* Took about 6 hours going through all three acts with some people yesterday. One of them hadn't played the board game but has played the video game and there was *basically no teaching required* it was awesome. We got to the heart and died there.

@lafourmiedesbois59015 ай бұрын
Unless you are a completionist they did not add so luch more in that DLC. These games have 2 dimension for player progression, the game content for a normal run, that's what casuals like, and then there is the ''end game+'' if I could say, which is more for completionnist players and people who really want to beat the game entirely and pretty much becoming a master at the game.
@JohnThems5 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, the devs basically immediately dropped support for the game as soon as the DLC dropped, so there's a good third of the cards that are just way too underpowered for the new mechanics. Monster Train also made me realize how deranged my completionist mentality was when I realized just how much of an insane task was to even just simply get a completion mark with every card. Not saying the game's bad, but yeah

Third, I've played the StS board game, and it's a lot of fun, but it takes a long time. I've played it twice, both times lasted 3 hours, and we only finished the first act. Maybe, one of these days, we'll get four people to give up *nine* hours so we can finally beat this game, but that seems unlikely. Is it worth trying at least once? Probably, yeah. But there's so much setup. The setup alone is longer than most deckbuilding roguelike runs. So, I have mixed feelings. YMMV!

One correction: Slay the Spire was not the first to have Ascensions - not by a long shot. I'm sure there are several roguelike games from days past that had them (probably MUDs), but one I know of for sure is Kingdom of Loathing. They even call them Ascensions. Although they aren't increasing numerical levels, they are unique challenges that introduce restrictions or goals on top of the regular game making it much more difficult, and they are only unlocked as a result of completing a previous run.

All of these games to be honest, for the most part, have so much endless replayability and depth, that they need a huge amount of hours to invest into and get good, that you can't ever do them justice without a heck ton of experience on them. Slay the spire is the king of course. Thousands of hours and you can still get better in it. Madness. They are not like the other games, or even the other roguelikes, where you play 5 or 10 or even 30 runs and then you move unto the next game. They are just not like this. PS: Monster train is actually quite fun, but I will say that you can break the game very easily, more easily than the other games at least, and this makes for a lesser challenge, compared to the slay the spire favorite. We always return to StS mostly because of the very nice challenge that keeps you on your toes, even after hundred and thousands of hours.

Astrea is one of my personal favorites in the genre and the only other deckbuilder to give me the same enjoyment as playing sts the first time. A little after its release it was actually overwhelming positive for a time, but it understandably dipped as the game asks quite a bit of the player starting out with its UI and somewhat flawed mechanics where many builds simply don't work without key components. It was also disheartening seeing the amount of streamers just tear the game a new one from the UI alone and promptly deeming it a dud, but again wasn't too surprised I guess.
