Also not enough info on why the mustang was chosen for korea over the p47 or corsair both with air cooled engines better suited to ground attack

Mr G E: That old chestnut, in fact in ETO the P47 lost more in the G/A role than did all the RAF G/A planes dating back to 1941. Why? because the P47 was so heavy that it was a dog to manoeuvre at low level

Typical modern documentary. Too little info spread over too long. And missing vital info in vital areas. For example, there is a whole story to tell about the Merlin being tested in the Mustang airframe. It's just a sentence here. Very superficial

I will give you the short version. Britain needed more aircraft. Gave spec to U.S. North American Aviation produced NA - 47. Fairly average aircraft. Some time passed. Britain SUGGESTED PUTTING A DECENT ENGINE IN IT.Result ; Merlin engine transforms aircraft into a world beater. End of story.

Hanne Catton: No not even close. The RAF flew the Mustang as a low altitude fighter before the USAAF even thought about fitting another engine. In fact the USAAF did not want it. And the RAF Mustang was very good It was the Brits that tried the Merlin first followed by N/A a few weeks later. It must have been contract problems that N/A persisted with the Allison

The best fighter design? In a pigs eye. was outgunned out flown by the Spitfire and when the RAF put on the 90 gal slipper tank range was not an issue either. Oh AND THE bRITS COULD FIGHT WITH THE SLIPPER TANK FITTED
