because of her trainer Renald Knysj who sacrificed his family's life for work and trained her every day of the week from morning to night and, invented new things for her to do, spent and lost much nerves with her, had tremendous patience, like no one did before. There are rarely such dedicated coaches who worked as hard as this coach. He didn't even want to train her, could have trained someone else, but since she was the smallest of all, he's got new ideas and tricks that a girl her size can do. Otherwise, he has trained a lot of other gold medalists in Soviet gymnastics. But nobody talks about brilliant coaches from SSSR, only about their work products. Without a coach, there is no elite athlete

I think her influence is highly underrated. The modern gymnastics movement really starts with Olga. Right after her Olympics debut, gymnastics gyms started opening up. She inspired a generation of young women and girls. She was a fierce competitor in a small, very attractive package. My sister and 2 of my cousins were allowed to take gymnastics, as a reward for maintaining good grades. One of my cousins got an athletic scholarship. Olga lit the flame. Consider Al of the pressure she must have been under. The world was watching, and she delivered.

Olga was the first Soviet athlete that my parents liked and cheered for. I remember, being a couple of years younger, falling in love with Miss Korbut in those days, so much so, I thought I would learn Russian and go to her country to see her. I bought myself an English-Russian dictionary but boy, did it look complicated. Gymnastics was my best sport at school and nobody in the school could touch me, so seeing someone so brilliant and talented as Olga was a dream. I’m so glad she enjoyed the success she has and that Olga is enjoying a happy life now in the USA. I still have fond memories of her.

Loved to watch the joy on her face during her performances. So many don’t smile until they’ve completed a difficult tumbling pass, and then, it’s a smile of relief. Olga performed from the sheer delight of movement. Or, so it seemed. Still enjoy watching all the footage of her and each and every time I want to get up and dance! She was a doll!

I was watching this in real time on television. I was 15 years old. When Olga did the aerial on the beam, when she did the release on bars, the skipping on the floor, all of it, I thought "No one has ever seen anything like this." And I was right. It was breathtaking. When I watch beam work today, yes it's all astounding, but nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is better than the lovely artistry of Olga's mount, that split & the perfect fluid hand movement punctuating it, and I always think, "Well they may be able to do acrobatics on the beam now, but something has been lost," and I always miss the beauty (I detest Wolf turns), and I always think of Olga Korbut, and Daniela Silivas, my two stars.

Nadia Comanche was the 10. Olga was the 10. No one else compares! Floor, Nadia. Balance beam, Olga. After that, they changed everything. The uneven bars have become boring. The balance beam is boring and the floor bugs me. The guys only show strength, but the girls have to dance. Either the boys should have to dance too or the girls should only have to show strength.

I was about 5 feet and 5 inches tall as a 10 year old when I saw Olga at Munich . I went outside and did a cartwheel and some handstands just from seeing her. it was more contagious than measles LOL Other girls showed up on my lawn for the same reason and we immediately formed a little :Gymnastics club' That's the power of smiling from the inside . It touched us all . you're always a winner Olga. I read your (Auto ?)biography and still remember :" Be first , be careful , be joyful " Words to live by. you were 4' 10" I am 5' 10 ' and you made me feel like a sister Thank you for your warmth and courage - especially even speaking against abuses(athlete A) You are still a role model and inspiration.

I remeber watching her at the 1972 Olympics In Munich. Olga Korbut was the first Olympic gymnast that ever scored a perfect 10! She kept blowing the American Commentators out of the water! It's so good to know she moved to America & resides in Scottsdale ~ one of the prettiest cities in the country! So happy she's living a successful life where she's content, happy, and a nice gentleman neighbor met her. They became friends, fell in love, got married and they loves each other so very much!! Olga also takes care of her mother & sister's financially. What a wonderful woman she is! America's very fortunate to have her! 😀😄🙃☺❤🙏🙏🥰❤❤❤

I was 22 when I saw you in the ‘76 olympics. I felt an immediate connection to you. Growing up during the Cold War, I was taught that the soviets were a tough and unfeeling people. You changed my perspective. But I did not hear anything about you after the olympics. It was as if you fell off the edge of the world. I was so worried about you, wondering if you did not have the freedom to come and go as you wished. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent and infectious smile. And what you did with the sale of your medals is so admirable, and inspiring.💞

I'm a few years older than Olga, and I did some gymnastics when I was young but my older brother was a state finalist in it. Olga transformed women's gymnastics. The popularity of women's gymnastics in the US exploded after her '72 Olympics, all because of Olga's radiant performances. Today, her old performances are still remarkable to watch because of the quality of her skills, and the joy in her performances.

Me too :0) I tried gymnastics briefly, in '78 or '79, realized there was no way that was happening (I have an autoimmune illnesses that was starting to drain my energy even then), but always loved watching. And getting a little peek into how incredibly hard these young women worked to be so great. I love that Nadia & Bart Conner live nearby now, that would have blown my mind as a kid!
