The more I learn I think I will store my DA 'Lady Alexandria of Kent' rose in the garage over winter instead of attempting to dig out the "dead" boxwood (after several years, now it's growing shoots) where I'd intended to plant the containerized rose. I received the bare-root rose in late May (I'm in zone 4b) and knew it would take me a while to open up the area I intended to plant it so I've been growing it in a large plastic pot inside a decorative ceramic container. It is covered in buds just as we're preparing for winter here in Minneapolis. I recently picked up lots of perennials and several shrubs that have to get in the ground. I planted more than a dozen plants the past couple days. Also, I was attempting to dig up some 'Therese Bugnet' shrub rose suckers to share with the neighbors (I put out 6 daylilies on my curb and overnight they are all gone) 😊 Seeing you struggle I think I'll plant my blueberries around the roses and deal with them in spring. There are so many weeds (creeping bellflower, lily of the valley and daylilies from the neighbor's garden) that also have to be dug out where I want to plant the blueberries and 'Bloomstruck' hydrangeas. I'm doing triage in these final days of gardening.

@@OlgaCarmody So far, I am a bit disappointed, but they're young. Some it could be due to a number of factors. Japanese beetles attacked first my apple tree and then they found my roses. I have 3 'Queen of Sweden' roses I got at the same time and those are planted in the ground, but that still had one of those nasty creatures just the other day (guess they didn't get word that JB should only be active 4-6 weeks). And then I have cataracts which affect how one sees color. I'm hoping they will be more like the color in the catalog once I have my new eyes. Our summer was incredibly dry. I watered frequently, but nothing can match natural rain.

It's true, nothing can match rain. It is interesting how different regions have different problems. For me, Japanese beetles are really rare guests. I just knock them off my roses.Good luck with the surgery!

Olga I planted a bare root rose about 6 weeks ago and it had started showing leaf shoots and looked good but now the leaves are falling off and I'm afraid it might die. It is not too dry. If anything it may be too wet. I realized too late that I had planted it in a low spot in garden. Should i wait and see or should i dig it up before it dies.

I recently bought a climbing rose (generous gardener) to grow in a partial sun location across my front porch. I have a full sun location (large wooden arbor) I’d like to plant a climbing rose on. Do you have any recommendations for a variety? Zone 5B

I must confess that I am hopelessly in love with David Austin roses. The reason for it is that his introductions, especially recent ones, have old rose charms, disease resistance and wonderful sent. So, my recommendations will be somewhat biased (no hybrid roses, sorry). I would go for hardy climber (your choice is limited, because of zone), good to 4-5 zone. There are just 8-9 choices at DA website, and if you don't want to repeat The Generous Gardener, you would have small pool to choose from. You can also look around your area, what roses grow well in your climate. I usually keep my eyes open and ask around when I see a thriving plant (most folks have no idea about their rose names, but that is a different story). Good luck!

My James Galway only bloomed once in spring, it’s a small climber. I guess all climbers tend to be onetime bloomers?

Hm, James Galway is a repeat bloomer with wonderful hardiness. Climbers can be once or repeat bloomers. Did your rose undergo some hardships this year in your garden?

@@OlgaCarmody Not really. I planted bare root in May and it bloomed beautifully, then it just sits here doing nothing, no new shoots, no new leaves and no leaves drop either, like went to sleep😇. I asked a guy in Florida, he said his JG only bloomed once too.

High heat of summer put your rose into dormancy maybe. I never have to deal with those conditions. We have a challenge of sandy soils here and water goes down quick. Or maybe your rose is young and bloomed only once....

@@OlgaCarmody I have sandy soil too :) I water it everyday and fertilize it once a week as I do to other roses. I think the location is not perfect, only gets one hour direct sun, and also like you said, it's young. I give it another year, if still not doing anything, I will move it to a better location. The thing is, I don't have any spot that gets 8 hours sun in my yard 😬
