This is a fascinating series of videos that certainly captured my personal interest! My great-great-great-great grandfather, James Leander Cathcart, was serving as a midshipman aboard the USF Confederacy when it was captured by the Royal Navy in 1781. He was then interred on the British Prison ships Good Hope and Jersey until escaping three years later. He returned to sea aboard the schooner Maria of Boston but his “adventure” was far from over. In 1785, the little merchant ship was captured, too, but this time by the so-called Barbary Pirates. Cathcart then spent the next eleven years as a slave under the rule of the Dey of Algiers. Great, etc. Grandpa did eventually gain his freedom and that of some of his equally unfortunate shipmates, then hurried back across the pond to Washington and demanded “something be done” about those nasty Mediterranean marauders. The rest is - literally - history. So, you can see why I would love to build this stunning model myself but could never even approach remotely the artistry demonstrated by Olha. Magnificent!

Thank you! Yes, this kit is really well made but all the details are made of basswood and this is the only drawback. It's fine wood to fill the spaces but awful as a finishing material. Wood is cheap and the model also becomes cheap and very monochrome. Therefore, I will add contrast by adding precious woods and create volume by tinting...

Excellent as always! I wanted to share a “discovery”. I have found that the metal foil tape used in making stained glass to be very useful. It blackens well and the gum does not dissolve in the process. The material is great for barrel hoops, gun carriage wheel tires, etc. Thank you for your videos!

Thank you very much! Yes, I have copper from this type of foil. I like that it is sold in different widths and can be selected on a scale for example for copper plating. But it must be handled very carefully because it is easily wrinkled. And also for its use it is necessary to prepare ideally equal surface!

Olha Batchvarova, I think I have your secret figured out - you are totally organized, and when you are working on a part of the ship, you have a nice, un-cluttered workspace! I think I told you that I build flintlock long rifles and pistols from about 1740-1820 or so. And a few percussion ones up until about 1870. I have four workbenches in this big room (about 6.2 m x 7,5 m), and it is almost impossible to actually see the work surface on any of the workbenches! Right now, on one bench, I am making a new stock for a double barrel 10 ga. shotgun. On another, I am making knives, putting the handles on blades. On another, I am building a 1770 Lancaster long rifle, with a 1,74 m barrel, and on the last, I am building a 1740 German Jaeger (hunting) rifle. AND it is piled high with skins and furs as I am making a pair of Eskimo boots called "mukluks", There are also 4 male cats and my Service Dog, Sunny. She helps me get around, shopping, things like that. Not doing too well in the mobility - Vietnam finally caught up with me. So, Miss Batchvarova, would you like to come visit and organize my workroom? You do exquisite work, very detailed in every way. this ship, by the way, a 1778 USS Confederacy, is huge, meaning that there are even MORE details to be shown, yet you just go calmly, doing one task at a time. Each one gets your total attention, something I am unable to do. I could teach you a few things to help you out, too. Forgive the long note - old man just rambling along.

Miss Batchvarov, watching this again - so much to learn! Why do you paint the bulkheads and "keel" black? Is this part visible when the ship is finished? And I want to congratulate you on (1) making sure everything is square, and (2) scraping off the excess glue. What other parts of the interior are painted? I can see staining or varnishing the decks - will you paint other interior portions? I did acquire another dog. My Service Dog, Sunny Girl, is getting old (like me!), so I have gotten a red Standard Poodle, Teddy, to train as her replacement. Teddy, at 8 months, is much taller than Sunny, and has all the energy of a classroom filled with 6 year olds!

That's right! This is a style of model that was very popular in the Admiralty, so it is a historical style that is called Admiralty style (or the British prefer the Navy Board models). So now, 3 😊 I build models myself, have been doing that for about 47 years now, but mostly plastic and there mostly planes and military vehicles.
