Great review. Answered a lot of the questions I had, like whether the included battery could be charged normally and whether the light would run on a standard 21700. One of the reasons I picked this light up is that, like the Nitecore HC35, it can be placed offset in the headlamp holder. I hike at night with a baseball cap and most lights won't throw just in front of your feet with a hat on as the bill blocks the beam. Being able to clip just the tail of the light (utilizing only one of the two clips) so the beam is far enough to one side or the other that it isn't blocked is a function I didn't know I needed in my life until I had it. I always hike at night. Thanks again for the awesome review.

I appreciate your covering the battery compatibility a bit after 2 minutes into the video. I don't have a lot of spare 21700 batteries laying around, other than in other Olights, but always good to know this information. I also especially appreciate the color temperature information of the white and red beams starting at around 10:30 minutes into the video. And of course the rest of the review!

Glad to see them supporting non-proprietary batteries more and more and some models using USB-C charging. For the sale price, this is some great output. I loved my Fenix HM61R, but it has much less output than this and the HM71R is more $$ and trades the Red for a flood and throw combo. Wish there was a combo of this one and the Fenix 71R! The Fenix 71R has 800 lumens high spotlight which is nice though.

@@ernesto18guanaco FWIW I have the perun 2 and it is a little too heavy for prolonged use (12g heavier than the perun 3). I'd actually rather have a spare battery and a slightly lighter light, but still with these specs. Sure I'd have to swap the battery out for the same run time, but it would make the light more comfortable to wear for that long time, so it's a worthwhile compromise, in the case of a head torch, IMO.

@@dialucrii31 so most my headlamp use is in the construction trade and right now the perun 3 is amazing in battery life. Far exceeds the Milwaukee 600. But for around the house I prefer a smaller one so will try a perun mini. Thank you

Would this be good for farm work, e.g. emergency fence fixes, herding escaped cattle at night? It would mostly be for up close / medium distance. I’ll carry something in my hand for spotlighting. Doesn’t need to be super light weight. Ruggedness, long running and reasonably weather proof would be top priorities.

Yes I would use mine for what you described. 21700 is as big as you’d want for a front battery headlamp. 600 lumens for 300 mins is pretty bright for a long time Anything larger you’d need a waist battery pack. I’d get a Javelot 2 Pro for spotting. Thing has range

I don’t have one, alas. History tells me that this would be slightly more refined. Based on other sofirn and Olight products I’ve directly compared. Sofirn is s budget brand and punches way above its price point, but Olight products do give more refinement for the extra money.

Would this be your headlamp of choice for backpacking and through hiking?
@cheule
@cheule 3 ай бұрын
Definitely. The CW nearly 7000k CCT is actually better outside than a high CRI 3500k-4500k for seeing the trail. I know that sound dubious, but I was having a chat with David Livingston of Cool Fall, and he said that in his rural area, 5000 to 6500k low CRI performs much better in the wood. I did my own tests, and I confirm it. I can see bushes and trees better than with the warmer CCTs. I think it has to do with the was warm brown tones and lush green tones both come alive at 3500k high CRI, while cool white low CRI provides a much better contrast between ground and bush, sky and tree at night. Do the tests yourself! It’s amazing really.

@@cheule Glad to hear that, and combined with some of the other features, red light, run times, headband that allows the clip to remain, and upgraded switch with battery level indicator, I went ahead and ordered one. That said, for my eyes, I don't really agree that CW is better, although when you get down to 5000K, then we would agree, as that is becoming neutral. The cooler the light the less well I can see, as things become much more two dimensional. Better color perception adds more depth perception or three dimensional appearance. I did read a hiking book, and he liked to keep his light lower to reveal more shadows/ three dimensions to the trail ahead. That makes sense if one can do it. It is probably why there are a couple companies that I saw advertising light belts in warmer tints, to do that very thing, to illuminate the texture of the trail to see and avoid holes and other trail issues at night. Another reason for warmer tones is that besides projects needing better light and color perception, people tend to use headlamps at night. LOL. Warmer tints are less destructive of circadian rhythms for better sleep.

My main headlamp is the Perun 2 mini, because it’s so lightweight. But yeah, you just can’t get around physics. If you put a 21700 in a headlamp, you’re looking at around 150g on your head.

@@cheule yeah, I liked the output and simple UI, the emitter and optic was great, the sensor and nice taper in light when U hit the off button. All great, quality great. It's just strapping a 21700 cell to your forehead, that didn't work. I now use a single 18650 headlamp from Sofirn with 2 sst-40's. It's not Olight quality but works a bit better. I think seperating the power source from the emitter might be a good option for headlamps. Olight gave me a 'Array' headlamp that I gifted my nephew, that had the battery at the back of the headlamp strap which worked pretty good but it was only 400lm. Which really is probably ok for 90% of tasks U use a headlamp for. An 18350 headlamp may be my next. Easy to carry some spare cells if needed.

@@cheule I love the Perun 2 mini and about the only nit pick I can think of off the top of my head was the lack of a red low. Although I love the brightness of the available red, it needs a low to as part of its cycle. After all they manage to fit a SOS level/feature and a turbo red. And then since its lightness is allowed by a relatively small battery, it combines well with the Baton 4 Premium, so you have additional power available.
