Not an Olight fan here but we need to he accurate. The exploding light had NOTHING to do with Olight except happenstance, they weren’t even required to appear in court over it. It was a cheap Chinese battery of the wrong rating that the Olight owner installed in his Olight. He held the light in his mouth while working on his car, the battery overheated and exploded, and popped the cap off the back, which lodged itself in his airway and he choked to death. Just as Glock isn’t to blame when Freedom Munitions detonates like a nuke, Olight wasn’t to blame for a wrong and cheaply made battery being used in their light.

@projectiledysfunction22175 ай бұрын
The specific phenomenon that caused the olight to explode is called reverse charging, and any light that uses multiple CR123As is susceptible to the exact same thing. The chemistry of the cheap Nuon brand batteries that the victim was using is apparently extremely likely to cause issues, regardless if it's in a cheap or expensive light. Can't post links but just search for "Photon Phreaks cr123a reverse charging" and you'll find an article that describes the issue in depth. The same article cites other incidents with different brands that used multiple cr123a batteries, which is why the industry has been moving away from them

My review is dropping tomorrow. Mine lost zero (by about 3 inches at 15 yards)when racking it off the optic 15 times. But it shifted back… It held zero under recoil though. I used a Zev cut slide with post and 4-40 screws. Lets just say the included 4-40 screws and the tolerances of the Osight screw hole tolerances cause the sight to shift slightly when hit. They need better/longer screws and a smaller hole. This is not unique, almost every cheaper Chinese optic Ive used had this same tolerance issue. They all held zero perfectly on a traditional RMR cut with forward post (because the fit was snug, with zero wiggle). You can watch my review tomorrow if you want the nerdy specs/measurements. Spoiler, it does have other practical issues…
@lucusloc5 ай бұрын
I had the same problem with the Sig Romeo Zero. I used it on a RMR pic mount that had no "cut" face to index against and it would flop around under recoil. You could even press on it with your thumb and watch it shift zero. Turns out Sig has a video out that stays you *must* index this sight against a cut in order for it to hold zero, as the polymer body and screws alone are not enough. I did get a full return from the vendor, as they agreed that representing the sight as "compatible" with a RMR mount while not mentioning it needed a cut in the product description (which is not part of the RMR specs) was misleading. As far as I am concerned Sig needs to add that to the product description; you need an RMR spec mount *with a cut* to index against in order to run those kinds of optics. (for those who are curios the screws can wedge the optic against the front face of the cut, which is why the tolerances on the screw holes themselves are not all that important when using both features to index and secure the sight.)

Using CR123As in something meant for AA or whatever happened is definitely not a good idea in any flashlight that won't support it. I haven't had of any dangerous, explosive failures with any of Olight's products with their own sealed batteries. I've been using lights like the Odin mini, Baldr mini, i5T, and Arkfeld Pro with no issues. They're cheap enough for me to cover my needs with EDC keychain/Pistol/Long Gun/emergency spare etc vs buying something expensive like a Surefire for just 1 gun. They can handle a flashlight no issue nowadays. I'm definitely skeptical when they enter another market, especially with first generation products. I'll come back around if they identify and address flaws like those in the video.

There are only a handful of optics than can handle a rock being smashed on them. The only one that comes to mind that is under $500 is the 509t. Zeroe shift is an issue, but no torquing of the screws, loctite, nor was a proper zero set. Informative evaluation but dubious execution.
@DeskPop5 ай бұрын
The 507 comp can handle this as well. All the cyclees can handle it. Definitely an RMR can handle it. I didn’t “smash” it, i dropped a fairly small rock from less than two feet. Proper torque for an optic is 10-15inch pounds which is quite literally hand tight; I’ve mounted hundreds of optics in my day, I’m very confident it was tightened properly.
@timoftheboat5 ай бұрын
@@DeskPop the test is subjective without controls in place to make testing repeatable. Proper torque, loctite, and a drop / smash test that is repeatable is how that is done. The review is fun to watch, but it’s subjective and your argument of having a tuned torque wrench of a hand bolsters that. I understand your argument, and understand having a tuned hand. I wrenched for a decade on carbon parts with titanium fasteners. End of the day humans are humans and we are the variable that needs to be removed. Also an rmr is a $500 optic.
@DeskPop5 ай бұрын
@@timoftheboat whatever makes you happy, go buy it and do the test yourself. I tested it effectively, you don’t need a “tuned” hand for 12-15 inch pounds. Especially when you’re removing and replacing and optic with another optic that’s had the exact same treatment and holds zero perfectly. My attempt to save you money is mute if you’re going to try to cope. Here’s the simple fact: I have mounted hundreds of dots by hand and with torque wrenches in the past year. 12-15 inch pounds is 1 ft/lb which with your experience you would know is extremely low; if anything I would have overtorqued the optic screws which wouldn’t result in the optic slipping. I put my 507 comp back on and torque it exactly the same way again, and It will continue to hold zero indefinitely as it has for the last 20,000 rounds of abuse this gun has already seen.

This isn’t a “just me” issue. If you got one that holds zero you’re the outlier. I wack it completely independent from mounting screws and it still shifts, you can and have seen that in the video. I have really been enjoying Gowutar red dots that are available on Amazon. I have not really abused mine however I started buying them after I saw officer Greg on KZbin review and abuse the crap out of one. Just thought I would throw that out there in case you want to review it as they are even less expensive than the olight. I have tried a couple of their models ranging from 100 to $170 and I'm pretty happy so far.

@DeskPop5 ай бұрын
eEvery optic worth buying now comes very close to zeroed or zeroed from the factory. it’s expected that I could shoot and just be a few clicks off, not have the dot a mile off target. The zeroing method I used here is just slaving the dot to irons; it’s possibly the most common way to test if a pistol reticle is moving because you have a fixed point of reference you can always return to.

Would like to see a more scientific test to see if it is shifting in the slide cut. I don’t think you mentioned it moving up or down, just to one side or the other. Which could indicate it is shifting around on the slide. Witness marking on the side and slide would help visualize that if it was that. Maybe also witness marking the turrets to see if they are moving at all, though that is probably unlikely. I realize that you or someone else may have already done this or considered it so feel free to ignore me. Just some things I would probably add to the testing to visually demonstrate what is and isn’t happening.
