Hurts and Love both looked mediocre. Both have huge contracts. The step down in play from the elite QBs is massive, but the contracts are almost the same. Hurts, Love, Prescott, Cousins. Examples of why you don’t sign guys like Darnold to big money, long term deals. Unless they can elevate the team in the playoffs, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Vikings should roll with JJ and hope he becomes elite. Worst case, he demonstrated competent play and upside in his rookie training camp and will be on a cheap contract to build around.

This system rewards division winners and only rarely (seems to) penalize excellent division runners-up. The 1997 Denver Broncos have spoken.

Herbert is still a very good quarterback. IIRC, Mackey opined before the season that Herbert would make the Vikings much better but the salary cap contract side wouldn't allow it.

Without divisions, the schedules could be much fairer. Play every conference rival every season, alternating location. Seed 1-5 and give a bye week to 1, 2, and 3. Traditional rivalries wouldn't die and new ones would develop.
