As you Brits and Scotsmen say . . . "BRILLIANT!" I needed to see this today. My wife passed away at 6:07 in the morning, five years ago today. Thanks for lightening the load for four minutes - makes me want to get a dog ...or two. ; - ) Addendum: I am blown away by all the kind words of support from ALL over - wow, thanks so much! Her affliction was diagnosed as primary progressive aphasia, a particularly cruel disease that affects & attacks the frontal lobe - where executive decision making, life skills, verbalizing, etc. can be wiped out - and it was. PPA is essentially a super fast moving form of dementia which can attack ANYONE at ANY age, for which there is no cure or treatment, per se. Please don't judge me when I say. . .what I would not do to change just one more of her diapers. She's at peace and that's the best I can hope for. It's the way it is. On another more positive note . . . GO CHIEFS!! ; - )

Olive is the dog I had for so long -- I watched him as a puppy, I watched him as he grew older, I watched as his muzzle got gray and as he slowed down. Watching a dog you love grow older is a gift, because it teaches us to appreciate every day, every moment all the more. Olive must be 10 going on 11 now -- I so hope she lives for many years more, because while Mabel is the silly and loveable one, Olive is the one growing old with dignity, the way we all hope we will. Thank you, Andew, for reminding us to appreciate the rare moments, the beautiful moments.

So lovely. When my aging parents moved in with me in 1994, we got two Labs, a black female and a yellow male who were littermates. I was still working and we were looking for something to keep our mom and dad busy and active. Molly and Bailey were the perfect answer. We had them for more than 11 years and they were the most wonderful companions for our family and for each other. Bailey was the last one to die but not until he saw my dad through several years of Alzheimer’s disease. On days when Dad didn’t know much else, he knew his dog and loved him to the end. Our family and Bailey gathered around Dad’s deathbed during his final hours and one of the last gestures I remember Dad making was to reach out and rub Bailey’s head. Thank you for this wonderful video. It brought back some really great memories. What would we ever do without dogs? What a wonderful gift they are.

I’m sure dogs (& pets generally) are wonderful companions for the elderly. You have to take them for 2 walks each day, care for them, and love them as they love you unconditionally. And dogs are PEOPLE MAGNETS. My current dog, a very sweet natured and cute bichon poo always draw people to him and they end up talking to me. So When I’m old and gnarly, i’ll adopt a cute little bichon poo and walk to the park everyday, where people will come up to play with my dog and talk to me!

Thank you for this--it brought tears, This is the story of our black Lab, Sawyer, who did not eat for two days after we brought home a puppy we found in a trash bag, a 12 week old sheepdog mix. Sawyer was a sweet dog but initially she growled at Dixon's attempts to play. Then, like Olive and Mabel, they became best friends. Eight years later, Sawyer died, on July 21 this year, and watching Dixon grieve with us was heartbreaking. She lay by the front door, waiting, for hours, for Sawyer to return. Twice, when she heard the sound of Sawyer's metal collar tags, she ran excitedly from the other room, then lay by the door again, quietly waiting. She became very anxious if one of us left the car, for example, to run into the market. If we both left her alone in the house, when we returned, she was frantic, as if we'd been away for weeks rather than a couple of hours. Only now, 7 months later, is she settling down.

They need closure. They need to know what happened. They can’t accept their friend going out the door and not coming back. It is why when Ramses died I stopped at my parents house on the way to the vet so Candy could sniff him and know that he was gone. And why I brought Diana to my parent’s house when it was Candy’s time so she could sniff her after the vet had left. Dogs are accepting of death. It’s the not knowing they can’t handle.

I was so happy to meet both Olive and Mabel at a book event in Edinburgh a couple of years ago. They brightened my pandemic. Last month we lost our pup of 15 years. The circle of life is beautiful and sad.

That is awesome just mentioning Olive & Mabel. I think a LOT of people ignore Andrew Cotter. (Sorry)

Whenever I need a good cry ( which lately has been nearly every day) I watch this beautiful video. I am ok until the music starts and then just sob. This isn’t a sad cry but one that comes from knowing just what you mean about life with dogs. “This new arrival is wielding dark and strange powers” is such a great line. Please keep making videos. We need them.

It is bittersweet for me to watch these videos - I lost my beloved chocolate Lab, Abby, 5 years ago to cancer - she would have been 13 that month - she was the dog of my heart & has left a hole that will never be filled, but I am grateful & blessed to have had such a wonderful, precious girl for the time that I did - RIP, my perfect girl - Mommy loves & misses you 💔

Thank you for sharing this lovely album of Olive and Mabel. I had two lab mix dogs who were bonded like that. They're both gone now, having lived long and happy lives. I now have 2 bonded cats, mother and daughter who are only 9 months apart. They play together and sleep together the way your Olive and Mabel do.

Love Olive's pink little belly and I can't believe Mabel's nose started out black!!!! You are so lucky to have a pair of beautiful playful girls! Thanks for sharing some of the joy!

Mabel’s black nose surprised me. I didn’t know that a black nose could change to pink.
@mrandrewcotter11 ай бұрын
Indeed. Apparently it's quite common for them to start black and then change.

@@mrandrewcotter is Mabel then referred to as a Dudley or is that just yellow labs with pink noses?

I’ve raise seven labs over my life. Every pup hated the new one. Then suddenly loved the new. And taught the young one so much. Best days. Miss those days.

My golden lab Billie turned 12 last week and her COVID-inspired chocolate lab friend Toby is three next month. Nine years is a big gap. Four to five years would be best. My two are the best of mates and I will weep without control when Billie leaves home for the last time. The joy these closest of friends bring to our home is boundless and I have been so happy to follow the adventures of Olive and Mabel during difficult times. Thank you Andrew🦮
