I bought three huge Olive Trees from Costco. I'm making an Olive Grove and Citrus Garden. Inspired by Gardens I have visited in Capetown, South Africa and the Mediterranean.
The olive trees weren't cheap so I need to protect them and care for them properly. Olives love several things and will not tolerate other things. Olives love heat, light, drainage. They do not like wet roots or particularly damp conditions. If you want fruit on your olives you will NOT to prune them (as they fruit on last year's branches), they need to go through a cold winter. Then they need a long hot light summer and a gentle breeze for pollination.
My olives were so large I need to think up an innovative way to light them into the shallow holes which I have prepared. The holes are deliberately shallow which will aid drainage and will also help retain the height of the trees. My neighbour came with a tractor and lifted them carefully into place.
I dig the holes with my long handled Irish Spade (Paid Link: amzn.to/3WIzuzi) and opened up the roots with my Grubbing Hoe (Paid Link: amzn.to/4bhk4Xh). I kept the root ball wet whilst i mounded up the earth. I wore my thorn proof gardening gloves (Paid Link:amzn.to/4dI2mgT). Eventually the trees were planted. I sunk three terracotta plant pots close to the roots of each so that I can get water down to the roots where it is needed.
Whilst it is important not to over water olives I will keep these well watered until they are established.
