We were recently able to come pay our respects to a great crew of underground coal miners in Iaeger, WV. Billy Contreras, one of the world's best fiddle players, was also able to be a part of these recordings of “Ole Red” and several other new original songs we played for the miners.

This song was originally written by James "Bo" Bohan, Don Goodman, and Mark Sherrill. It was first recorded by George Jones for his 1990 album You Oughta Be Here with Me. Don Goodman is one of my favorites, and Billy Contreras on the fiddle used to tour with George Jones. I felt like this would be a perfect cover to do while we were down in the mine for the Dick Clarke New Year's Eve session. This was an active mine and we were required to wear the hard hats. Yes, I do have a big head. Lol I appreciate all the support. Talk to you soon.

But you do it 3 times better.. I'm from Alabama where the Fort Payne band lives. I've been playing music over 50 years. And you are great! You are welcome to come here anytime. My neighbor. Retired from music and has a 5 year old recording studio if you ever want to look into it. Something for you to think about. But anyway keep up the great work you and your friends may choose. It's not the same studio that the Alabama band used. It's Much better. And it's only a block from where I live. 😊 ..

You know why I like you and support your music? It’s not because you can sing, play the guitar like no other, or come up with great songs. There are plenty of other artists that can do that too. It’s because you stayed true to who you are and didn’t sell out for the almighty dollar. Just like almost every single person has in the music industry.

There are a myriad of artist that haven't sold out. It reminds me of a story. When the Clash were accused of "selling out," Mick Jones replied, "I'm pretty sure a sell out is when there are no more tickets."

Being poor doesn’t make you any better of a person than a rich person. Wealth only amplifies the affect you can have on the world around you. A good person with means can make much more of a difference than a good person with nothing. Think of the parable of the Good Samaritan, there wouldn’t have been a story had the man not had enough wealth to share with the travelers.
@StoneKathryn
@StoneKathryn Ай бұрын
@@Andrew-cs1td The Good Samaritan was amazing because in those times if you helped out a criminal you suffered the same fate as them so helping someone you didn't know was very risky. You were putting your life on the line helping someone you didn't know. That's why it's such a good story. They put their faith in that helping someone was better than not. Money is corruption. I'd stay "poor" and do things and I think that would carry a lot more "weight" than doing things with money that never works. Look at Mother Teresa? I respect Chris a lot for not signing a deal with the music companies. Right on Chris! God is good!
@Andrew-cs1td
@Andrew-cs1td Ай бұрын
@ money is not corruption. You can do good or bad with money, and again had the Samaritan been poor, he could not have helped to begin with. Money only amplifies your morals. If someone is “corrupted by money” I’d wager they were “corrupt” before getting money as well. Mother Teresa used the foundation of Catholicism to fund her charity, again would have been much less effective without the wealth given to her cause.
@cblachl
@cblachl Ай бұрын
It just doesn't play out that way in life, that those with money have greater power to do good. Being rich does grant you more power to move resource and material, but less power that comes from the humble intelligence of being connected with the earth, community, and lifeways that generate long term survival and balance. There's a cost to wealth hoarding, and it happens in your spirit and your intelligences. Hoarded privilege separates you from this earth. I do justice work - the people who have the most privilege, while well meaning, often cause the most harm and have the least lived intelligence to show up and do the work in a good way that actually generates community survival or "positive change" if you want to phrase it that way.

My Father was born in 1919. He was a force to be reckoned with. He lived his life the way he wanted and I never saw him not have an answer someone was looking for. He was well read, well loved, and a giver if there ever was one. The day he died was January 11th. I thought the world would stop turning. I thought everyone would feel the world dim a little when his light went out. None of that happened. He was laid to rest on our family land and I’m here to tell all y’all that the world is a little less worse off without him. Y’all might not know him..but I did…I did…we need more folks like him. I’m trying everyday to be my best version, but it’s hard in this new world…I’m getting tired y’all….

Hi Oliver, My name is Jay Tucker, and I’m with the Westmoreland Parks and Recreation Committee in rural Tennessee. We’re organizing a music festival to raise funds for improving our parks and fostering a sense of community, and we’d be honored to have you as our headliner. Westmoreland is a small town with a big heart, but we face challenges that come with being in a rural area. For example, until recently, the community sewage tanks were located just 75 feet from the coach-pitch baseball field. It was a tough situation, but this past year we managed to get them moved. Even so, our parks still need significant upgrades to truly serve as a gathering place for families. Our town also has a rich musical history. Westmoreland is the birthplace of William Owen Bradley, born here in 1915. He became a trailblazer in country music, shaping the “Nashville Sound” and producing legends like Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn. In addition, upper Sumner County has produced icons like Conway Twitty and the Wilburn Brothers. Your music resonates deeply with rural communities like ours, and having you headline our festival would mean so much. Please let us know if you’d be interested. Thank you for all you do to uplift small towns and communities. Sincerely, Jay Tucker Westmoreland Parks and Recreation Committee (615) 405-2774

I think the first time I ever heard this song I was 27 in 2007 and I drove 2 hours through a blizzard to take my best friend to a Blake Shelton concert in our hometown casino for his birthday. I swear there had to be less than four hundred people in that little room, maybe a lot less, so it felt like a private show blake was really young back then and I think it was right around when his album came out with this song on it. Man, he really sang the hell out of that song. I am glad you chose this song to sing in the bowls of the earth.

I'm the great grandson of a coal miner I never met and was never told his name. I've always been curious of that side of my family's past. I might never know anything more about that, but this music helps understand where my heritage is from, and the spirit that pushes me forward through horrible times. Thank you for this Oliver. Your music and soulful singing is what music has been missing for decades.

Awesome! I was lucky enough to get to go into a coal mine in Buchannon WV in the late 80's, we went all the way to the face where they were working, turned off all the lights... never been anywhere darker and never forgot this experience.

Great job! I like your version of this song better than Blake’s. You have such a fantastic voice gravely at times and it is always so powerful! My family were coal miners here in Southern Indiana. Seeing you giving your concert at the bottom of a coal mine brought back a lot of memories of my dad and my uncles. Thank you so much for that. Many Blessings to you, your family and your band in this new year. Keep on rockin’ in your soulful country way. You are definitely one of the best in today’s country music. Much love, 💗 Debbie
