Yeah I was in this circle thru 2007-2013. Bill was in a hard place and left Mid Michigan and moved in with my older brother in Traverse City and lived in his basement for 2 or 3 years. I saw Billy Strings from about 20 feet away on a lawn-stage at a free bluegrass festival in the Midwest in 2017. I had never heard him before, and my jaw dropped when he started playing. It was pure magic. His talent bowled me over. I could hardly believe the music coming out of this young person. Later that night, I watched him pace back and forth in the dark up and down the driveway of the hospitality house for the festival. There was a gorgeous after-party going on--beer and smoke flowing, spontaneous jams and musical exchanges popping up under trees lit with strings of soft lights on an absolutely perfect summer night. I was there as a journalist. I had interviewed one of the other performers and had been extended the grace of an invitation to the party. I watched Billy for a couple minutes. I thought about saying hi to him, about telling him how much I loved his performance, but I left him alone instead. It just seemed he needed that solitude. But I'll never forget those minutes of watching him pace alone in the dark. When I watch this clip, I see that person-away from the throng, getting a little space and quiet in the throes of a party.
