Oliver 252 Disk Build Part 1

Finally going to get the 12 footer rebuilt into a 16 so we have a decent match for the big tractors.

Well Ethan we used to replace our disk blades the cheap way. I used to buy used blades from the big farmer down the road. He ran 30 foot Deere disks with 24" blades new. They changed them when they got to 20". The exact size my old Long disk used. They worked perfectly. I paid $2.00 a blade, which is higher than scrap prices and the blades were sharp and thicker than the standard 20" India blades. Needed 22 blades so for $44 I got new blades or at least new to me.

I figure I’m never getting rid of the disk and with what I’m going to do with it I’ll likely never wear out another set again so I just wanted to go new.

@@Oliver66FarmBoy I hear ya. It is a cheap option for some of the smaller farmers out there. I did the same for an old Dearborn fold over disk we have too. It is mainly used for fire line plowing in the woods.

Long one but worth the watch. We really like the way you breath life back into these old pieces of "meadow green". The first disc I remember pulling behind an 1800B. I have rebuilt Dad's 252 several times! BTW we've purchased several pieces from Olsen's.

It's crazy what's happened to the supply chain. I just rebuilt all 4 gangs on our old IH 330 disk and Shoup took a little over 2 months before all the parts finished trickling in. Glad I ordered in December or I'd be in the same boat.

The spring is not even broken on the adjusting crank on yours , have high bid on a 251 White disc that ends tomorrow . Disc in good condition , one bearing gone one it .

Good video. We have a 254 disk, so smaller frame and a square gang axle. We upgraded the original rock blades to Ingersoll blades that are a wee bit thicker, and are Case Ih Earth metal. We had to make a shim so they fit the gang axel correctly. We have had them a few years and are yet to break one.

My grandpa had a business where he would go out to the farms with his homemade disk sharpening machine. It was a cool.system where he used hardened steel rollers to roll the edge of the disk between the hardened rollers which smashed the edge until it was sharp. That process also made the new edge stronger. The machine ran a 3.5 hp Briggs engine. It took most of a day to sharpen a tandem disk like yours. He made good money doing that and ran the business many years.

@@Oliver66FarmBoy we did it with the disk mounted. It pinched the edge of the disk between two curved rollers that spun the disk on the axle. As it rolled, we tightened the rollers together and that forced the edge sharper as it went, and made a beautiful edge. That really made the disk last longer in the ground. The rollers were minted on a "cart" arrangement and were year driven by the engine. Once it was set up and started, we just tightened up a hand crank to force the rollers together. The rollers ran parallel to the disk edge. My grandpa made the rig and we hauled it on a small trailer along with parts and tools to fix up the plows.

I guess after 50 some years it's still making money. I guess all it has really needed was a couple of replacement engines. He says it still has the original rollers and is still on that same homemade trailer.

I agree with your thoughts on the use of a disk. It is a weapon of tillage warfare, but if you go to war, you need to have a good one. I bought a John Deere 310 12 footer and its the biggest little disk I've ever seen. Its about four feet tall when its up and it has 21 inch blades and 11L-15 tires. It can turn sod into powder in three passes. But not good for preparing a seedbed.

In 1969 my dad rented 400 plus acres of newly cleared ground it was rough on a disc and especially when you centered the front GANGS on a stumps ie broke blades and axles it was in a floodway and chunks were an annual chore and challenge every spring for a few years.... also rough on a disc...

Great video Ethan and the result thus far looks really good and capable of some serious work. Would you consider on that extension where you cannot get the end nut free destroying one or both of the old bearings by carefully cutting them off the shaft (as I understand they are shot?) to make enough room to get hold of the shaft firmly so that, with heat, you might be able to remove the end nut without damaging the remaining threads any more than they already are?

I always liked notched or scalloped blades except you must remember they are halfway wore out when you buy them... but, in heavy stubble they cut and cover better. We ran scalloped on the front gangs and solid blades on the rear gangs....

Great disk....we had the Ford version (model 240), 12 ft with notched fronts and smooth rear disks. Pulled it with an Oliver 1855 in heavy clay. Always dis a good job. I would like to make this disk as a 1/16 toy and wonder what the length and width of the frame, as well as the length of the original hitch beam. If you happen to have those dimensions, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

I’ve got a 242 Oliver disk that is getting the front gangs done just as soon as the blades show up. Sloan was out of stock on the notched 18” blades, so I had to get the smooth ones.

If I remember correctly I think we got the disks for our Oliver disk from Tempco a couple years ago they were 20s with round hole we run notched on the front and smooth on back.

Idk if itll help you, but when we did bearing on out 630 deere disk, we put 2 really big washers on the inside between the spacer and the end disk blade to take up the wobble out... havent used that disk in a couple years now but it held together for 400 acres

I replaced blades on a few disks and used the notched blades on front and smooth on back, the india blades were used every time, they aren't bad. For vegetable farming we used smooth blades front and back.

We used to rebuild IH 490 32 foot harrows and it was normally a two day job.Tear them down one day and build them back up the next. That is a lot of hardware to replace. I know somebody is going to ask so it might as well be me and that is could you convert to a square axle? Here in the south you see a lot of harrows with all notched disc for rough tillage then some have half and half and then some have all smooth for finish work. With all the strip till going on they usually sit in the yard till fall when you get ready for grain. Don't really use them like we used to.

What did you do with the old blades you pulled off? I got a 252 I just ordered all new bearings for myself. I got a couple broke discs but dont need to buy all new ones and I'm afraid if I buy a few new ones they'll be too large. I only use mine when a hay field is plowed and replanted here and there. The smooth discs are what I tend to use for that. I'm just north of you by the allegan area.

On IHC 480 DISC WE HAD AN HABITUAL PROBLEM WITH THE BUMPER WASHERS ON THE FRONT GANGS THEY HAD A TENDENCY TO RUB EACH OTHER AND WEAR OUT ON THE FRONT GANGS...THEN IT WAS AXLE GOING TO MACHINE SHOP FOR NEW AXLE CAP....

I replaced blades on old offset disk, I used the same notched blades. I was wondering if you staggered the notches on the blades? I was concerned with the India blades too.

Notched blades give more pressure per blade, until they are worn flat. They work great though.

At least at this point the disks are usable if you can't get the blades for the wings straightened out. Lot simpler to stack than my AC disks. Axle shafts are 6 sided with 2 opposite points cut off to make them 8 sided. Square stock slides on for square holed blades. Spacers between blades are round inside and the bearings are 6 sided to ride on the axle shaft.

Your really doing some heavy maintenance on the tillage equipment this winter. Years ago there was some places that got disc blades with no hole . The dealer would punch whatever hole the customer needed.

I don't know where you're at, but there's one complete disk with springs wings and all, just missing the hydraulic, that has been retired 20yrs ago and is siting on a rock-pile just right there (google map 45.74263313856483, -70.73120307651007) I think you'd be able to get it for less than scrap-iron price just for cleaning the place and give its life back ;)

I disliked IHC 480 SERIES DISC because there spools and spacers had a tendency to wear.... the axles had also were bad to stretch...mostly from over torquing the end caps....
