This is the sequel to The Rocketeer that we will never get from Disney, it certainly comes closer to the pulp adventure genre than every other MCU flick. Joe Johnston always had a penchant for films with that old time adventure quality, under a better regime he would have been the go-director for Star Wars and Indiana Jones.
@Peer1653 жыл бұрын
I don't know about that. He did make that trainwreck called Jurassic Park III.
@oscarstainton3 жыл бұрын
@@Peer165 Even though Jurassic Park III is my least favourite of the series, Johnston’s direction is hits a enough of the Spielbegian notes decently enough, even with the weak story and changes that rubbed me the wrong way. There weren’t many journeyman directors at the time who could have managed the same film, especially after such a messy pre-production. Ultimately, his films outside of JP3 and a few exceptions tend to be solid as far as big studio films go.

There will be a remake of the Rocketeer . .but with a progressive twist, so , yeah not close to the pulp adventure genre and neither was John Carter of Mars (also Disney)

@@SuperOmnicronsj44 I felt that John Carter of Mars (to give its proper name) was at least a decent swing at pulp science fiction adventure, even if the same material partly inspired Star Wars and made it’s age more apparent. Critics should never lower a films score because it had a 3D option. That has nothing to do with the film itself, the story, the characters, the effects, none of it. Score the move based on the movie, not on what the distributor does to make more money. That's not the fault of the film. If you want to add something in the review about the 3D conversion, whether it adds anything to the film or is awful, that's fine, but I don't agree with lowering the score because of it.

Great review! The First Avenger is still my favorite Captain America movie and favorite MCU film overall, because of the actors and characters, the origin story, the 40s pulp adventure aesthetic, and the music, and I think its highly underrated.. I also agree that the third act feels a bit rushed because they're trying to set up for The Avengers, and i definitely wanted more, but I was satisfied just enough with what we got because of the emotional weight of Bucky's "death" and Steve's sacrifice. With Hayley Atwell coming back on board as Peggy Carter (at least in What If...), I hope Marvel gets to return to that WWII adventure aesthetic again soon.

I could see a whole TV show about Cap’s time in WW2. Maybe with a style reminiscent of Inglorious Basterds or Saving Private Ryan. I’d love it. He could… I dunno, rescue Werner Von Braun or other scientists, liberate concentration camps and do it all in that glorious outfit.

To me, Cap became a relatable character and really the heart of the Avengers with the 3 movies inside the MCU. All 3 excellently crafted, character-driven stories which can stand without the action scenes. In his deepest core, in the words of Dr. Erskine, Steve was a good man. Not perfect, but good. Always been a fan of Cap, but feared the boy scout personal might turn people off. With Chris Evans, Joe Johnson, later Russo's and how MCU overall portrayed him, he was shown how I have seen him to so many others. He is hope, compassion, and looking to do the right thing. He will get knocked down at times, but he will always get back up. This movie was great. Not perfect, but it did Cap right, and the montage is quite fun.

The thing I remember most was its marketing company thought it was a good idea to produce frisbees promoting the film to be distributed to kids at cinemas. As soon as kids were handed frisbees at the box office they immediately started throwing them, as you would expect, which caused no end of trouble with them hitting fellow patrons and the concession stand in our foyer. We quickly decided to stop handing them out as they were more trouble than they were worth. That said, I still have one somewhere.

Fantastic as always, and fantastic choice for your first forte into the "MCU". I remember seeing both "Thor" and this movie in the Theaters. While I thought "Thor" was a visually good looking movie, this film was more of a traditional and more well done film that really explored the character's origin, something that "Thor" really lacked. I'll admit, I was a bit iffy on the casting of Chris Evens as Captain America, but he really nailed the role. Also, I can never forget the music, especially the "Captain America March", such an amazing theme. It really fits with the old time setting and the whole superhero motif. This year, I attended my very first "Free Comic Book Day" at my local comic book shop, and while me and my Dad were there, the Shop was playing some comic book movie music, and a slower version of the Captain America March played as one of them. Been such a long time since I've seen this movie, and now its 10 years old. What a milestone.

I think the Hydra futuristic aesthetic worked as a benefit for the movie. I do agree that it made the film feel more like fantasy' at took me out of the 40's feel; however, it helped establish consistency within the MCU. Across the over 20 films, when we've seen the stones or where they're referenced, high tech was commonly involved: the portal device in Avengers 1, the gauntlets in 3 and 4, holograms in Gotg and Thor 2. Yes, there are other times where the stones were used by other means, like magic in Doctor Strange. I'm just saying the aesthetic in the first cap movie set the tone for how the stones will be interacted with. Either magic or advanced technology.

It’s basically a good Wolfenstein movie so I enjoy it just for that.

I started watching my collector's edition of the Infiniry Saga in 4K not too long ago and I just watched Captain America! It was a fun little movie! It's so interesting going "back in time" (in retrospect, ironically! 😉 ) and watching how everything came together. Thanks for doing this retrospective, Oliver! 😀😎🤘

I agree, Captain America has some of the best theme songs in the MCU. Spiderman has his theme that plays for like 6 seconds. And of course, Black Panther is easily recognizable. Surprisingly, DC keeps the music consistent with Wonder Woman and even Superman for a bit

Time flies. This feels like it came out 3 years ago. What the hell.

I love this movie a lot. However had it been up to me it would have been two movies the second half needed more room to breathe and it really could have been it's own movie.

Viewers who had problems with this film need to watch or rewatch the first 3 live action versions mentioned. Although the 2 with "Motorcycle Man" are two of my guilty pleasures since I was a growing up. Oliver said some of the equipment were to futuristic for the era, but this is a superhero based comic book movie. There were plenty of futuristic-like stuff in the books since it's heyday.
