Such sad news about Olivia's passing. She was only 73 & bravely fought cancer for nearly 3 decades. Olivia had so many great songs such as "I Honestly Love You", "If Not for You", "Let Me Be There", "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)", "Have You Never Been Mellow", "Xanadu", "Hopelessly Devoted To You" etc. She starred with John Travolta in the movie "Grease" in 1978 & they had some great songs together "You're the One That I Want" & "Summer Nights".

Thanks for taking the time to honour Olivia - in Australia we lost 3 great musical artists in less than 2 weeks that were giants to our cultural life - Archie Roach (indigenous singer who was part of the Stolen Generation where indigenous kids were forcibly taken from their birth parents & placed in white families to 'assimilate' them - decades later the Federal Parliament led by the Prime Minister formally apologized) Judith Durham (lead singer of the Seekers who were the first Australian group to be million sellers internationally - they even knocked the Beatles from number 1 in the UK) and of course Olivia Newton John who we always regarded as 'our Livvy,' It's almost as bad as loosing three family members in a short space of time such were all three's status in Oz so - as a country - we're kind of in a state of shock. VALE to all three artists - Archie the poet of the Stolen Generation - Judith who was like Australia's big sister and Olivia who was what we all wished Australia could be at our best - innocent but a little bit cheeky - open hearted and most of all kind hearted (the Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Centre is part of a hospital in Melbourne that Olivia helped to establish).

Olivia was first heard on US radio with If Not for You (1971) and later Let Me Be There (1973?). My personal favorite is I Honestly Love You (1974) written by Songwriters Jeff Barry and Peter Allen, her first #1 single. She received country music nominations and won over current artist of the time, a surprise. After the movie Grease, her career and music took a change and this is probably the period most people know. Her grandfather was Nobel Award winning Physicist Max Born and her father was in MI5. A Great Career and Life and at this time, a lot of people's thoughts and sentiments are I Honestly Love You, Olivia. :)

I have loved Olivia since my teens during the 70's and bought every one of her albums on vinyl. I even managed some very rare imports that I treasure. Olivia did an entire show for the release of her album "Physical" and had music videos for every track. Few artists did that. They would find one or two hit singles from an album and make a music video to promote the song .... but an entire album ? !!!! and what an incredible album it is. I have since only this January bought the remastered cd, imported from Australia. She has released a Special Edition cd & dvd with the show on I spoke of. I already have them on a special dvd + many more music videos, but it is definitely worth getting for anyone who hasn't got Physical on album or dvd. The news of her passing is heartbreaking. She was my 1st real crush. The most beautiful girl next door looking female I had ever seen in my life. Over the decades I have always continued to play her albums. There is so much more to Olivia than a pop song. Listen to this album and see. RIP Olivia ...I honestly love you !

It was the summer of 1974, between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, I was camping with my friend and his family at a local campground, we were listening to Casey Kasem's radio show, and I suddenly stopped what I was doing.... _Her_ voice came over the airwaves and straight into my heart. I think I sat down, but am not sure -- maybe I just stood there, frozen. I'd liked her _Let Me Be There_ last fall, and _If You Love Me_ this spring, so I recognized her voice. But _I Honestly Love You_ was something different. It felt like she was right there with me, singing those lyrics in her fragile, delicate, deliciously-beautiful voice.... Right. At. Me. I was floored. This was that same intensely-sweet feeling I'd get with a new girlfriend, or a crush. And in this case it was not for someone right there next to me, but for a voice coming out of the radio! It's like she was my age (although I knew from looking it up in fan magazines she was 11 years older than me), had caught my eye from across the room, and was smiling at me, a bit shyly. Her earlier two songs were really good, but with this one she captured my heart. And for the next 48 years, she never let it go. And now it's breaking. Goodbye, pretty lady. You will be missed.

That line “You Know What I Mean” I never caught that when I was 15 in the 80’s. I was dancing around the house and singing the song. It was a fun song! I think Daniel, this is your introduction to 80’s pop music. 👍Catchy & Danceable & you could sing-along with the songs. Then there are the slow songs or ballads also from the 80’s. My GOD these slow songs and ballads are the sweetest, romantic tunes you’ll ever experience in your life. ❤❤❤ Because you have never reacted to a pop song, except for one and that’s on Patreon but that was in the 70’s. Are you going to give 80’s music a chance?

Judge-mental much, Daniel? Hahaha. Wait . What did Daniel just say? Get in my…He doesn’t talk like that. Daniel has me laughing. This interpretation is hilarious. In 1973 Olivia was a country recording artist with the song “Let Me Be There” then crossing over to adult contemporary. A series of of No. 1 easy listening hits followed, “I Honestly Love You”, “Have You Never Been Mellow”, “Please, Mr. Please” . Olivia won 4 Grammys. Daniel, can you react to Let Me Be There. The video is on you tube under the name Katy Jones. Running time 3:16 “Suddenly” her duet with Cliff Richard. A video under the name Juan classic. Running time 3:34 & “Deeper Than The Night” (1978) under vevo Thank you, Daniel. R.I.P. Olivia. ❤❤❤❤Thank you for your music when I was 14. Thank you for your talent.

Strange though it may seem in the times that this was released it was unusual for girls to be seen to be the initiators of a physical relationship. This was a hit, but never one of my favorites. "Magic" from the movie she starred in (Xanadu, recommended for simple fun) and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" from the her first breakout movie role (Grease, fun, but dated) are better. I first heard her when I saw her LP album cover and was attracted and listened. Among those songs I heard before I saw her in movies include "Have You Never Been Mellow," and her duet with John Denver, "Fly Away." Her film, Xanadu, gets a bad rap a lot of the time but I love it. It was among the last works for the remarkable Gene Kelly and had a lot of great music and fun visuals, although the plot was minimal. I would enjoy your reaction to music clips from the show, or the whole thing. Again, it gets very mixed reviews, but even if you just watched for your own amusement, I think you would find the joy many of us did. Cheers.

I think a lot of the appeal of this mega-hit was the controversial contrast of Olivia's girl-next-door sweetheart image with the overtly sexual lyrics in "Physical" .. I know she had a taste of that more raunchy side in her "You're The One That I Want" duet with John Travolta, but this was taking it to another level .. The suggestive lyrics here left little to the imagination ! ( PS - I loved ONJ ! )

Nah. I think your gut instincts are right on. These lyrics are absolutely predatory, and the dissonance comes from hearing the words from a woman. I believe the reason you'd be even more uncomfortable with it if it were a man singing is that it would be more believable in our society. There are definitely more male pickup artists than female. lol But either way, you are totally right to feel a little icky and uncomfy with it. It's funny because I never actually knew the lyrics. I knew it wasn't my favorite Olivia song, but that was more because it didn't do much for me sound-wise and it doesn't showcase her incredible voice like some others. The only words I knew, though, were the chorus and that doesn't show how kind of creepy it is. I could totally see this having been a Rod Stewart hit during his "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" days. lol

I'm glad your dad introduced you to Olivia, but this is my least favorite hit of hers, although it was one of the best charting songs of all time. My problem with it is that it does not show off her voice or her or her complexity as an artist. Sadly, most of the world knows her only by this song and does not associate it with other great work, including her starring role in Grease. ONJ fans know everything she ever did and cherish her like a goddess! If you haven't seen Grease you are missing out! Even if you don't like musicals, watch it!

I adore Olivia Newton John but this isn't one of her best. You should have chosen "Have You Never Been Mellow." It's got a great mellow 70s vibe and her vocals are breathtaking. So mellifluous and melodious! It's interesting that this was written with Rod Stewart in mind.
