Glad you finally did this, but I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and urge you to listen to Hounds of Love in its entirety. As many have said side 2 in particular, "The Ninth Wave" is epic, and astounding. Another video you might enjoy is a live version of Running Up That Hill with David Gilmour on guitar from 1985, I believe. It's pretty cool to watch now that the song is so popular. Honestly, while Running Up That Hill is a great song, it's one of my least favorite of Kate's as it's pretty straight-forward. Cloudbusting is fantastic, but my favorite is the title track, Hounds of Love, which is an extraordinary allegory about a woman who is afraid to fall in love.

A lot of the sound effects you are hearing were produced by KB's Fairlight synth (CMI Fairlight sampler). Hounds of Love was the first album on which she actually composed songs using the Fairlight rather than her piano, and that certainly allowed for more mysterious atmospherics and textures. The drums were programmed with a Linndrum drum machine, which like the Fairlight, sampled actual instrument sounds rather than creating sounds from scratch. These were kind of like advanced electronic versions of the Mellotron (which used actual magnetic tapes of recorded instruments).

You should certainly consider listening to "Hounds Of Love" as it's an iconic album from the 1980s the perfect balance between the more commercial tracks on the first side and the concept piece "The Ninth Wave" a linked suite of songs starting with "And Dream Of Sheep" - Kate did perform "The Ninth Wave" live as one of the acts in her 2014 "Before The Dawn" concert residency. A video of Kate singing "And Dream Of Sheep" live was projected onto a large screen at the start... However "Hounds Of Love" isn't my favourite Kate Bush album, but it is up there... my top three as follows: 📌The Dreaming - this remains Kate's most experimental "out there" studio album, the first one where she was the sole producer. Techniques used on this album were expanded upon in "Hounds Of Love". This is an album has undergone a critical reevaluation in recent years, but it got me when I first listened to it, I usually like to follow the advice on sleeve to "Play it loud" 😀 📌Hounds Of Love - see above for my thoughts on this album 📌Never For Ever - Kate is credited as co-producer for this album and it certainly shows, this was when Kate started to spread her musical wings, there are some absolutely classic tracks on this album, it's also notable for the appearance of the Fairlight CMI, which Kate was introduced to when working with Peter Gabriel on his 3rd album (Kate provided backing vocals on the tracks "Games Without Frontiers" and "No Self Control"), of course Kate subsequently mastered the use of the Fairlight CMI and used it to even greater effect on "The Dreaming" and "Hounds Of Love". The album entered the UK album chart straight into number 1, making Kate the first British solo artist to have an album reach number 1 and the first female solo artist to have an album enter straight into number 1.

This song, through nothing more than its coincidental release date, reminds me of the worst year of my life. Consequently, Kate’s wishful sadness, so beautifully expressed in her singing, can still nearly bring me to tears 37 years later.

Hounds of Love is my favorite album because it carries such a deep emotional impact. It has stiff competition from The Wall by Pink Floyd also due to it's emotional currency. I've commented already on many reactions to this song over the last couple of months and I've intimated many times that listening to this song turned up loud on a real audio system is a must have experience. The louder the better. If you can get some "pant-flap" happening and no clipping, then you're doing it right. Her 'The Sensual World' album is equally as good as any of her albums, objectively speaking. I highly recommend that one to any newcomers looking to hear her more accessible material. P.S. Trivia: Note that the song has no cymbals or high-hat involved. A conscious choice on her part. If I'm not mistaken (and I may be), there are no cymbals or high-hat on any of the tracks on both The Dreaming and Hounds of Love.
@leslieturner82762 жыл бұрын
It has been reported and documented that there was a "No high hats" rule in place for "Hounds Of Love". It may also have been in effect for "The Dreaming" as well, because if I remember rightly Peter Gabriel had a similar approach at the time and Kate did work with him prior to both of those albums.

Probably my third favorite Kate Bush album, after 50 Words For Snow and The Dreaming (which is my all time favorite album). This album (Hounds of Love) is a bit like a light, bright version of The Dreaming, equally weird and experimental. I first heard this song in '85, Inwas 16 and I probably just like you in this video, with hands and everything.
@medmon34762 жыл бұрын
The Fairlight that's mentioned is one of the first synthesizers that was available for use and it was extremely expensive but Kate had to have one because of her vision for this album. Having said that I would recommend you start with Kate's first album the Kick Inside (which has no synthesizers) because all her albums are great so why not start with the first one (which is only known these days for the singles that were lifted from it but listened to as a whole it gives you such a good snapshot of where Kate came from artistically that it really helps to make sense of her subsequent work). PS it has one of the best songs ever recorded about making love - Feel It - that you'll probably feel embarrassed if someone else is in the room (family member?) when or if you listen to it.
@onsesejoo26052 жыл бұрын
Technically speaking it wasn't a synthesiser but a sampler with limited modifcation capabilities. The album "Hounds of Love" was more palatable than the predecessor, "The Dreaming" which was very experimental album and really featured the use of Fairlight. Kate Bush did almost all by herself on that album as well.
@medmon34762 жыл бұрын
@@onsesejoo2605 I realized I wasn't quite correct after I commented and then looked up Wikipedia and saw that she had used it first in the Dreaming . The only reason I remember that the Fairlight was a milestone was that it was developed in a suburb of Sydney (I grew up in Sydney) and was actually named after that suburb but when it comes to the technicalities I'm not an expert in any way - although I do know that the Fairlight pioneered sampling because another reactor mentioned a song recorded in 1977 (from ABBA the album) sounded like it had sampled a voice so I had to do a little bit of research so I could correct them and say that sampling wasn't around in any meaningful way back at that time. I'm still voting for the Kick Inside because when you listen to the album in one sitting all the way through it 'nourishes' your soul ( and that's always a good thing!).
@onsesejoo26052 жыл бұрын
@@medmon3476 On the other hand, my reply is not far from nitpicking. Today the workstations have practically speaking made the line between synthesiser and sampler to vanish, and on the top of that, synths' presets have improved a lot to be even closer to the real instruments.

Your reaction format probably doesn’t allow for a full album review. But if you can extend it, the second half of the Hounds of Love album (thinking vinyl records) is well worth listening to in its entirety. It is a 7-part concept suite of related songs called ‘The Ninth Wave’. Beginning with ‘And Dream Of Sheep’ it is basically a stream of consciousness from a woman lost at sea in the water with just a life jacket (with its “little light shining”) who is in danger of drowning. A great many people, myself included, believe this to be collectively her greatest work.
