I come back to Vingt Regards (and specifically to Roger Muraro's performance) about once a year. And everytime I conclude this is one of the highest feats human beings achieved around the concept of faith.

This may be the greatest performance from among the many I've heard of this great movement from Messiaen's pianistic masterpiece.

roger muraro started his career as a musician with studying the saxophone in Lyon. his parents did not buy him a piano. He started late the piano at about 12. He went to Paris to study with ELIANE RICHEPIN for many years and was finally admitted at the conservatory at the masterclass of yvonne Loriod. But he continued his studies during all this years with Eliane RICHEPIN. He was her most important pupil together with Pascal GALLET.

An amazingly intense and insightful performance. A perfect rendition of the profound religiosity that informed the work of Messiaen. This is the 21st regard: le regard de Muraro. Stunning!

Großartig gespielt mit beeindruckender Technik und Musikalität. Intellektualität und Emotionalität gehen hier eine überzeugende Symbiose ein. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Herr Muraro!

I think it's hard to not play from memory, considering how incredibly difficult the movement is. You have to learn all the ins and outs of the piece

@@pianoman1857 I thought your point was that it was very hard to play this from memory, and I meant that it isn't, because this piece basically requires that you memorize it

@@mischacarlberg6631 oh ok, sorry you understood me well, and i didn’t. I was indeed saying that playing this from memory is very hard. But to answer to your point now, i would say that modern music is always very difficult to remember because your brain usually use harmony to know where you are. Here you can almost only rely on digital memory, that’s what make this music very hard to perform
@mischacarlberg6631
@mischacarlberg6631 3 жыл бұрын
@@pianoman1857 I agree that modern music is a lot more difficult to memorize. However, I would argue that with a piece like this, the technical challenge is so incredibly big that you basically can't sight read it or play it in a short amount of time (I'm sure there is some mad wizard who can do that tho), which means you have to learn it really meticulously, and that means a lot of repetition, which means you will begin to memorize it. I've been playing this piece for about a month, and I've practiced the first three pages so much that I have them memorized already

It's getting harder and harder to keep tabs on all the great players out there. It's frustrating. How did I not know about Roger Muraro? It's mind boggling to think of how many others are still out there that I'm still unfamiliar with.

Yes, but hilariously there is a wrong note! No kidding! The first one, the F sharp, he hits two. Now, I really hate these bozos on youtube who criticise wrong notes by pianists. I only mention this because I found it so funny. He also does the same with the final chorale chord in number 20, adding a high C sharp, and I wondered if this was an addition put in my Messiaen in old age.

What about the piece do you not like? Is it the avant-garde, contemporary style in general, or is this piece just "too much"? I know many people who dislike messiaen, but in particular, they cant stand Vingt Regards. I would be interested in hearing your point of view.

If I had his technique, I'd rather expend that kind of effort learning / performing Alkan, Rachmaninov, or Liszt or perhaps a virtuosic piano transcription of a familiar melody such as a Strauss waltz from the gilded age of concert virtuosi. Modern repertoire like this is going to have a very limited audience and isn't likely to become a perennial favorite beyond the halls of the conservatory among casual ticket-buying concert goers as Stephen Hough and Marc-Andre Hamelin well know.

Messian's Vingt Regards is for an elite class of pianists, Michel Beroff, John Ogdon, Yvonne Loriod, Peter Serkin and Aimard, to name a few, just as Rzewski's Variations on "The People United Will Never Be Defeated" is for pianists in the caliber of Hamelin. Think of these works like Beethoven's Hammerklavier or Diabelli Variations but for the 20th Century.
