Today I turn a water bottle made from wood that you can actually use. Made from scraps of walnut and maple. Finish with lemon oil.

Love all your work. Although it isn’t safe to keep reusing a plastic water bottle for long periods of time as the plastics eventually releases toxins that can be harmful especially if it’s left in warm places, so I hope you have figured out a way to replace the plastic bottle inside every month or so
@joermnyc
@joermnyc Жыл бұрын
Actually exposure to UV light causes the plastic to break down and leech into the water. Putting it in a light proof wooden container might prevent that, or at least slow it down.

A few of you have pointed this out, I didn't know that. It wasn't made to be used on a daily basis anyway, it's more of a novelty item. But the bottle can always be replaced by sucking out the air with a vacuum if needed.

I think refilling his new bottle from a sealed plastic bottle was meant largely to test capacity, if his crafted bottle holds the same as a new one, his plastic liner was fully expanded inside the wooden sheath. If it did not take the full bottle, there are kinks or areas folded over in the liner, if it takes MORE than the new bottle, you have an internal leak in the lining. Less comment than quality control testing.

That's not a reusable plastic bottle he stuffed inside the wooden one. . That one is actually supposed to be recycled after single use. Once the inner protective layer wears off, that bottle will dissolve all sorts of toxins in stored water, and it's designed for single use! So I see. . Unless this project is just an entertainment piece or just for show, it's fine. Hope Oliver doesn't drink out of it though.
@arthasmenethil2201

First, the wood container cannot be used as a bottle unless it's perfectly waterproof, which isn't the case. Second, the idea of this is to keep your drinks cool for a long time. I don't recommend hot beverages though because the bottle will shrink, deforming it permanently.

Man, that Trombone arm is Genius. It takes the guesswork out of interior carving, no risk of cutting a hole through your hard work. However, instead of risking cracked and/or leeched plastic every time you replace the interior, you can always use a food-grade water seal, like linseed oil, so you can store the water directly within, and use a cork to cap the bottle. It's like artificing your own Bottle-Gourd, but with recycled wood rather than waiting for the Calabash to grow.
@elhoward7440
@elhoward7440 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation of there being an effective stop on the radius of carving out the interior. I would have been way too scared of carving out too far and having to start over, because I've actually done things like not using the right drill stop and drilling all the way through a cabinet door instead of just making a recessed hole in it.

Linseed oil, I don't think so. Linseed oil, flax seed oil are same thing. Flax seed oil needs refrigeration, short shelf life. Linseed oil does not dry. The "boiled" of boiled linseed oil is the addition of toxic driers and is definitely not food safe.

This is beautiful work, truly it is. I thought it was going to be a lovely lamp or a vase. I would not waste this beautiful workmanship on a plastic bottle. Also if you are going to use it with a plastic bottle, I think you should’ve made the bottom unscrew the bottom to replace the bottle because they don’t last forever and you can’t clean it properly the way it is now. Really don’t want to get dysentery or something else disgusting from a dirty bottle. Also, if the plastic bottle leaks the water will turn that beautiful wood to mold on the inside and you probably wouldn’t even realize it. Now, not to waste this beautiful bottle idea, if you could make the bottom screwable, you could use it for presenting your favorite wine at the table, refilling a glass bottle While also being able to remove the bottle to clean it for a different wine. Or to put the leftovers in the fridge.

@@littlesnowflakepunk855 it isn’t intended to be a “functional piece”, theoretically or practically. It is intended to be an ART PIECE. crafted to RESEMBLE a water bottle, with an “impossible” plastic water bottle IMBEDDED INSIDE the wood bottle. THAT is the impressive part to anyone who hasn’t seen it being made. it’s a SHOW piece.. a CONVERSATION piece.. a FLEX of his shop equipment and talents.. If he wanted to have a screw-on opening at the bottom, he wouldn’t put ALL that effort into hollowing it out from the tight neck!!! but yeah, keep on thinking he was trying to build a simple wooden water bottle holder, but he just didn’t think to put a bigger opening on the bottom!! smh

@@adamfirst9321 "awesome idea to reuse plastic" the keyword there being "reuse." lemme break it down for you the word "use" means to employ something to achieve a goal. the prefix "re-" means "again." the combination of the two implies that the end goal is to use the plastic item for the same purpose as it was originally intended to be used for

Your woodwork is amazing! But this inflated plastic water bottle inside will always remain wrinkled so that you cannot empty it totally. Remaing water will start to stink. And plastic will dissolve in the water. Maybe the better solution is to cut the wooden bowl into half, to insert a water bottle made of glass and glue it together again.
@Zhixalom
@Zhixalom Жыл бұрын
Yeah...I'm thinking a screw-lid at the bottom of the wooden cover. That way there is no need to curl up and inflate the plastic bottle and you can also change it out later, if needed for some reason.
@mal2ksc
@mal2ksc Жыл бұрын
Make the bottom a disc that can be removed to change the bottle inside. No air pressure needed, and this means you could easily use a still-sealed bottle which is a requirement in some situations. If that had been in the design from the start, it would have been a whole lot easier to hog the material out of the inside going through the bottom rather than the narrow neck.

You're my favourite turner on YT. Always interesting and creative. That's the first time I've seen you use that metal holder with the four wheels. What happened to the other one that you made out of wood?

0:31 I love the use of the safety sticks followed immediately by putting your wrist near the still spinning blade, definitely not a good idea!

Okay man, how in the world have you acquired such an array of tools and equipment at so young an age? I didn’t even know a lot of stuff you’re using was even out there. Fascinating channel, thanks.

I loved the idea of recycling our old water bottles like you show in the video so much that I ended up making one of these wood containers for every discarded water bottle I could find in my home. Although I’m so thankful that I am contributing to saving our planet, if you want to do this you should be aware of a couple of things. One. It will take a lot longer than six minutes as shown in the video. It ended up taking me about six hours per wood container. Two. Although I feel good about recycling the plastic, because I found approximately 85 discarded water bottles, I ended up using a lot of wood and glue. This made me question whether saving 85 water bottles was really worth all of the trees and glue that I used. I also have to buy a larger home to keep the 85 much larger wood containers in. I guess it’s give-and-take. I just wish the guy in the video was a little more upfront about the trade-offs before I endeavored to start this project. Although I did question whether I should continue after I had spent about $2500 on supplies, because I’m not a quitter, I went ahead and saw it through to the end.

I really like the idea! But I just had a thought, wouldn't the plastic in the water bottle eventually degrade? I remember there being a reason to not reuse plastic bottles for a reason like that. Or is the idea to replace the plastic part every so often?

Seems like a lot of work for little gain to me! If you love woodworking fine it looks beautiful. I wonder what happens when the glue on the cap lets go and you can't get it open?
@FhangMedia

then the wood cover on the cap falls off and you twist off the plastic cap like normal, it's literally not an issue at all, or, get this, put more glue in the wood cover and glue it back onto the plastic cap, there, 2 solutions for you.

Beautiful woodwork - impractical. There's reasons disposable water bottles are single use - they are engineered to hold water in a sterile environment. They aren't designed to be washed and reused. That's so much work for something that can be hazardous to your health. Stay safe! And maybe pick a reusable/cleanable liner next time. (Sorry, I don't know anything offhand with the properties you'd need to line the finished vessel. Is there anyway to make your vessel removable so the liner can go through the dishwasher?)
