Here you are joining me for a little demo and explanation on spraying water based paint and how to get a smooth finish as possible by using a guide coat of paint to get your sanding flawless.
The guide coat of contrasting colour helps you see all the imperfections while you sand allowing you to be certain you have a perfect base for spraying the topcoat.

It's a 30:1 Graco merkur with Wagner gm4700 AC gun. The pumps are generally indifferent, but that gun is the one to have. 👍

Very informative thank you. When spraying primer on MRMDF I'll sometimes get a few orange spots where the paint hasn't adhered do you know what the cause of this would be? Thanks Josh
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 3 жыл бұрын
It will be contaminant like wax or silicone. Remove them from your working process, especially silicone. You'll have to remove contaminant via thinners/panel wipe and try again/use a shellack sealer on that spot first

What was the product you were using as the Guide coat? Just a very watered down paint? or specific product?

I was in the auto body industry before i started woodworking. I use an aerosol can of guide coat sold at any auto body supply store for about $7. Works great and it's ready to use instantly. Just a tip

Cheers Dan, it is a similar product that got ne down this route, i like the wash style as the waterbased paints can be a bit funny with other chemicals, so this way im only using the same product. I dont use it all the time though, just on certain jobs!

good video as normal fella, been watching for a while now but think this is my first comment. the finish left by the gun is called orange peel as it looks like the texture of orange skin/peel. One thing i would suggest is it would be quicker to use a dry powdered guide as you would not have to let it dry before sanding and it can also be used for wet sanding, if you search ebay for dry powder guide coat im sure it will bring a few up but most good manufactures make them like U-Pol, 3M, Indasa, Mirka etc. Also using a dry powdered guide coat might help with paper clogging/balling up as you not making the paint wet again (you can normally remove most of the paint clogging the sand paper up with a bit of scotchbrite or a clean wire brush). i would also say from the video your holding the paint gun to far away from the surface. normally the distance away from the surface is the same as the fan width, so reducing the distance could help with how the gun lays the paint down on the surface.

@@BradshawJoinery no worries mate. be careful of the rattle can versions of the guide coat as some of them are just normal matt black cellulose paint and may cause issues with the paints your using. as long as its Dry Powder guide coat you should be fine

This is great, very helpful. What kind of prep are you doing to your panel prior to the very first primer coat you apply? Will a light sand be enough or are you more thorough at that stage? And are you only applying a single top coat after two primer coats?. Thanks, and sorry for the many questions lol

You want a flat surface in terms of overall flatness. (or whatever effect you want) I find with some softer timbers its best to just belt sand to get as flat as possible then sort the surface finish (smoothness )out after primer

cheers Sean, I have thought about it, but i like the freedom to as much or as little as i feel like at the minute. it can be hard work alongside a busy schedule, taking the time to film and instruct while also producing. Pretty full on. I do like the education side though!

Thanks Mike, for most painiting this can be achieved without the guide coat by using light reflection, but its a really essential technique to a flat finish
