"what are you studying Italian for" they say this with every language they don't deem important or necessary for the person learning and I honestly hate that mindset so much. Sometimes you can learn a language for fun, or like you said for escapism. Languages doesn't need to only be learned as a skillset for some job or anything like that. Its always good to know more languages in ur life, it helps you connect with more people, the cultures, create relationships, appreciate the world more.. the list is endless. language learning doesn't need to be a "need" only but a "want" as well if that makes sense. thank you for this wonderful video!!

I agree. I remember many years ago a guy told me that I wasted my time for learning French because everyone speaks English as a global language. I told him I wanted to learn the language because it's a very widely spoken language (he wasn't aware of that. He thought it was only useful in France) and I was really passionate about it. Imagine if I told him right now that I'm learning Dutch. We all know Dutch people are very good at English and they even prefer to speak English with foreigners. I chose this language because it was interesting to me and I still don't regret my choice. I've also learned Portuguese which is a very useful language. I'm from Argentina and I've met some Brazilians. Many of them spoke Spanish very well but others spoke a mixture of Spanish and Portuguese. This language has been useful to me but I don't use it that much nowadays because I prefer other languages and I haven't met other Brazilians lately. At the end of the day, you should learn a language you like rather than a "useful language" only because it's useful. You'll end up hating it. I know many people here who dislike English because it's a mandatory language in school.

Piacevole nell'ascolto. E così ho iniziato a studiarlo. Ciao ciao 🇮🇹

This video spoke to me, because I struggle with whether to continue with Italian or switch to something more "practical" or "major", like Spanish or Mandarin. Language learning takes a lot of time. And it's a zero sum game - every hour spent on one language is not spent on another. But in spite of their "importance", those languages are less motivating to me and hard to stay at. Italian, on the other hand, is a pure joy, and I stay with it out of love. Its relative ease and sheer beauty make it a pleasure, not like work at all. Add to that the art, the food, the architecture, streetscapes and scenery, the music (my original motivation), and what's not to love? But I also have some rational arguments in its favour: 1. Its similarity to more other romance languages is arguably closer than other romance languages. Even to more divergent ones like Romanian & French. And closest to Latin. So it's kind of an indirect way to "study" them a bit at the same time, incl. Spanish - if you're fluent in one, you can understand a good bit of the other. 2. For 1500 years, Italy was a (or the?) center of ideas and evolution of W. European culture. It gave us the Roman Empire, the Latin language - Europe's lingua franca and main written language much of that period, and the Renaissance. It has more UNESCO heritage sites than any other country and a huge portion of the world's art treasures. It's literally the language of music. It has cultural influence way disproportionate to its size. That's why it's such a tourist mecca. 3. Being relatively easy makes it a good investment of time, because a given amount of study yields more results than with more difficult languages. 4. Studying Latin (or French) deepens your understanding of English because of the Latin roots of so much English. But Latin is really difficult and definitely not fun for me. Italian is as close as I'm going to get, and serves the same purpose. 5. Italy is high on my travel list. Really enjoyed this video. Thank you, Olly!

Mi piacerebbe andare in Italia 🇮🇹 alcun giorno.

Dante in the Divine Comedy composed all the verses that make it up of eleven syllables. The Dante tercet, or chained tercet, or third rhyme, is the verse used by Dante in the Divine Comedy. It is made up of three hendecasyllable lines, of which the first and third rhyme with each other, while the second rhymes with the first and third of the following tercet. This pattern is maintained throughout the complete work without exception. For me it is something that goes beyond human capabilities.

@@Daniel27600 Foreigners usually forget subjunctives. We can understand what they mean but the sentence won't sound 100% correct. Another thing is that Primus repeats "yo" (meaning "I") many times and that sounds totally unnatural in Spanish. We do understand he/she's talking about him/herself so there's no need to repeat it. I only do that when I'm angry, trying to sound empathetic.

Forty years ago I did total immersion in Italy for months on end, in both Milan and Rome. I had a mini nervous breakdown after two weeks in Milan, but everything in Rome occasionally descended into total madness and I couldn't compete with those scenarios. One day I was in the Metropolitana (subway) in Rome, and there was a big poster beside the track, announcing "Sciopero oggi!" (Strike today.) Then there was a banner across the poster "Cancellato" (cancelled). It struck me funny, to announce a strike for no reason (they don't have goals for their strikes, they are just muscle flexing) and then call it off for no reason. I remembered the Bugs Bunny cartoon when he was singing the Barber of Seville while shaving Elmer Fudd, so I began singing, "Sciopero sì, sciopero no, sciopero sì, sciopero no." People who were waiting for the next train quieted down to listen to me, and when I was done, they politely resumed their conversations. See, who was crazy in this picture? Not the Italians!

@"Italian is the most beautiful language in the world." I've been wondering why people say that. I suspect there might be 2 major reasons. -Italy is a beautiful country and most people think of it as romantic, as a country with friendly people, great food, art, music etc. Many people might have less positive associations when they think of Germany or Russia and, by extensions, the languages spoken in these countries. -Italian doesn't have many weird sounds or combinations of sounds. No crazy consonant clusters, no tones, no nasal vowels, no clicking sounds etc. Many people might prefer hearing sounds they are mostly already used to.

If you want to learn them just because you like learning languages and out of curiosity and you are not particularly interested in either Italy or Spain/Latin America, I would say Italian because it's more melodic (the most beautiful language in the world for many many people), so it's a pleasant process to learn it, and Italian music is generally very beautiful with nice lyrics, and listening to songs and spoken conversations is a nice way to learn a language. Although obviously Spanish has way more speakers and therefore more presence and more resources (this is especially true if you are American). I don't really recommend learning both at the same time because they're quite similar and you'll probably mess up a lot with the vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation etc. Anyways if you choose Spanish please please don't search for the most popular modern Hispanic music (mainly reggaeton) as resources, generally it's trassh and the lyrics are nonsense, just a bunch of random vulgar phrases, search for real music. I speak both so if you have any doubt feel free to ask :)

I find it easy because my native language is Spanish and Italian is very similar. I can guess many words and conjugations with my knowledge of Spanish. Easiness depends mostly on your native language and other languages you've already learned. The most difficult part of Italian for me was using ne and ci correctly because those pronouns don't exist in Spanish. If you don't speak a romance language, it will be much harder for you so good luck with your Italian.

Depending on the way you look and the area in Italy you travel to, if your Italian is better than "tourist Italian" level, people might think that you are an asylum seeker and they will treat you in a rude way, very badly. So have a camera hanging from your neck so they believe that you are a tourist, they might still be rude or they might refuse to talk to you, but the asylum seeker treatment is much worse.

🇮🇹 I am more of a Romaphile than an Italophile but the language is beautiful, my own aunt resides in Italy, I like the plays of Carlo Goldoni, and I do like Italian medieval and renaissance history. P.S. 🏰 Italian history gets boring, at least to me, after the end of the Great Wars of Italy (1494-1559), when the peninsula stabilized with centuries of Hapsburg rule. P.P.S. 🪖 I am planning on joining the active duty U.S. Army and am attempting to have being stationed at a base in Italy as part of my contract.

2:12: No real Italian ever says "ufficio postale". In Italian you say "posta". (Would you say "sala cinematografica" instead of "cinema"?)
