Have had one based on your video for a couple years now. The first tire we changed was on a 1992 Harley Dyna and we ruined the bearings because the shaft was slightly too large. We machined the shaft down so it is no longer an issue on those bikes yet still fits the attachments and newer Harleys. One important thing we have found is on large cruiser bikes or adventure bikes it is very important to get the tires HOT first. We are lucky our climate has warm days, so we wait for a hot day and leave the new tires in the sun for as long as possible before mounting. This is the same thing our local Cycle Gear does.

As you have, I looked at my options and it was either a "No-Mar Cycle Hill HD Plus" or the "Olmaxmotors" tire changer in this video. I am primarily using it on my BMW GS from a 1986 to my 2016 models. In my dollars, the No-Mar would have costed me $781.45 with shipping to my US holding address and I'd still have to take the time and gas to pick it up, whereas the Olmaxmotors ran me $510.18 with air shipping to my home. In both cases, taxes would still need to be paid and I'd sooner pay it on a smaller amount. And the Olmaxmotors takes up a whole lot less room in my shop. It would have been nice to see the bead breaker work on a tire that has been mounted for a few years. They can be hard to remove. In the past, I've used my hydraulic press.

This is a great video. It looks so easy I bought a machine. What isn't mentioned is that adventure tires have thicker sidewalls making them way harder to change. Things that look easy in this video are way more difficult with adventure tires. I struggled for a long time with my front tire and finally gave up on the rear and took it to a shop. The dealers I called wouldn't touch it as I didn't buy the tire from them. I was lucky to find an independent guy to mount the tire or I really would have been stuck. People mention that if you bolt the machine down and heat the tire it's a little easier. I left my tire in the hot sun for a few hours and it got me a little closer but not close enough. It seemed like if I used much more force I would have either broke the machine or damaged the tire. I certainly would have bent up the spokes on my wheel. My advice is go with another option if you have an adventure bike or expect it to be much, much harder than the tire change in this video. My machine will be going on CraigsList unfortunately. The machine really does seem like a great option if you have a street bike though.

LOL. The ones in the video were new Michelin PR4's IIRC. Not particularly soft. I've done track tires for people that are like balloons. I have to wrap a tie down around the circumference to get the beads to seal. The PR4s aren't soft, but probably softer than some super stiff enduro tire etc. One key is being sure you get the bead on the opposite side down into the lowest part of the wheel.

This is a great video and I purchased the Olmax tire machine based on what I saw. However, a word of caution to those of you who ride a heavy cruiser or touring bike and want to use this machine to change your tires - it is not as easy as it looks. In order to support the weight of a heavy bike, the tires have to be much stiffer than what was demonstrated in this video. I have a Goldwing and run Bridgestone G704/G709 tires which have extremely stout sidewalls with very little give. I have yet to successfully mount a tire for my Goldwing using this machine. I can get the duck-head about 2/3 of the way around and then I can't apply enough leverage to move it the last 1/3 of the way. The machine itself starts moving around and/or the tire will simply spin around on the rim. I ultimately have to finish the job using old fashioned tire irons. I'm in the process of building a platform that I can bolt the machine to which should help with it moving around. I'm also going to use a different tire lube next time so maybe that will help. I thought about putting a pipe over the lever of the machine for additional leverage but I'm afraid of either breaking the duck-head or tearing the tire. I'll be trying it again this weekend with a Shinko SE890 tire for my Valkyrie. I hope it goes better this time.

Very good content and demonstration. I do like this machine and have used it several times, but I would add one comment. Labeling that Michelin Sport Touring tire as "stiff" is a matter of perspective. When I use this machine to change my adventure bike tires (Continental TKC 70) it is necessary to bolt this machine to the floor of my shop. Otherwise you can not get enough torque to the Butler head to shoehorn those "really stiff" tires on a rim.

Nice to see you used a new stiff tire for the demo. Rather than a radial sport tire I'd like to see a demo using an adventure type tire like Heidenau K60, these seem to be much stiffer and harder to mount. Never have I been able to push the first bead on by hand even on a properly warm tire. Also, it seems like the machine would be easier to use if it was securely attached to the table. Thanks for your careful inclusion of all important details.
@mechsavvy90673 жыл бұрын
Don’t have one of those to do. I don’t have any trouble with it moving with normal sport tires but yes if you had some beast of a tire then it wouldn’t hurt to lock it down. The manufacturer expected it to be used in the floor I think. I chose to use on table.

Can you do a 21 inch wheel. My assumption is that the wheel rests on the rubber covered blocks and they may not be far enough apart. Your video was the best product video I have seen!
@mechsavvy90673 жыл бұрын
I don't have a 21 to do right now, sorry. But as a 21 is 10.5" radius ot the inside of the bead, the rim will be about 11.5 to the outside of the rim, the tire machine pads are 11" from the centerline so I believe it will work fine. You can inquire with Olmaxmotors at their website to be sure, but I'd be very surprised if the machine wasn't sized exactly to be able to do 21" max size. It's the biggest bike tire if you exclude those odd-ball vintage Honda 23's. If you find different, please let me know.

I have worked hours with clamps, wrapping the circumference with a ratchet strap, warmed it in the sun, used a hair dryer to warm it up, took out the valve to get unrestricted flow, all with no luck. Are there tires that just won't seal? any other ideas that I could try?
@mechsavvy9067 Жыл бұрын
Only recently have I had this problem myself. Once was on a friends track tire which was fairly soft, and a second time on a Michelin PR6 front. Extra tire lube helped but I had to use a ratcheting tie down around the tire. That fixed it without any problem both times. A larger (higher volume) air compressor than my tiny 2 gal would have helped I’m sure. It has been the exception that it was a problem and I don’t blame it on the machine as the machines job is to just get the tire in there. I’d have had the same issue no matter what machine installed it. I’ve seen dedicated spare air tanks designed to blast a tire bead into place but I’ve never used one personally. Also seen some sketchy back country garage tactics too that I personally wouldn’t use.

Which of the two Murphy's Tire Mounting Lubes do you prefer? I noted one is a paste and I take it the other is a liquid. Which one is less messy or stays in place better? Which one slips better?
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
The liquid goes on easier, but you have a "work time" with it as it dries. It comes in concentrate, you are supposed to dilute it 3:1 with water. but I only cut mine by 2:1 or less so it's very slippery. The paste seems about as slippery but it's relatively more difficult to put it on. Not bad, just not as easy as the liquid. But, it has a longer work time and does not dry like the liquid. A little messier I'd say, but again this is relative to the liquid, not terribly messy generally. HTH

Great video! I also bought the Olmaxmotors machine after comparing different models. One thing though: are you sure that when mounting the new tyre, the bead has ti be placed under BOTH lobes of the mounting head? Usually the bead has to be placed over the first one and under the second one, at least in commercial machines in tyre shops. Maybe you could elaborate on why you placed the bead under both lobes. Thanks :)
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
When mounting, I don't see any reason to hook the lobes (catch only one). Matter a fact it would be difficult to hook just one frankly. Since all the lead lobe does is push the tire down over the rim edge, there's no need to pass over only one. For it to work like the mount, you'd need 2 hears with opposite configs as the left ear isn't designed to be the thing that pushes down. But for grins, next time I do one I'll try LOL.

Did you screw the tire changer to the bench because I do not see it moving about? I know it has rubber feet, but I would think when you are moving the lever around, the changer would move due to the force applied.
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
I did not. But, it was sitting on a piece of "anti-slip material I picked up at the local big box store.

Great video, i appreciate the effort and always been a fan of concentrated information. Mine just arrived this week, it took forever of course, but that's the nature of the beast. they were very quick to provide information if I had any questions and the payment process went smoothly via PayPal. What size tire iron would you suggest? Any brand or type you would recommend? Thanks man.
@mechsavvy9067 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I don’t have a specific one to recommend. Longest one you can find. Mines about 18” and I’ve had it for probably 30 years.

Nice review. Do you think it will work with car tires as well?
@mechsavvy90673 жыл бұрын
In a pinch maybe. The bead breaker post will be on the short side, and the post would need some kind of adapter for the large wheel hole. Personally, I would not get one for that.
@turtlepowersf Жыл бұрын
In regards to the short stop post, is there some reason why youre not able to mount/dismount the tire with the spokes on bottom?
@mechsavvy9067 Жыл бұрын
Depends on wheel and where the “deep spot” is

Do i need extra adapter for single sided swing arms like Triumph/Ducati? If yes, is this also included in the package or do you offer this Adapter in your shop?
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
I needed one for my Ducati SSSA. I got it from Olmax, it was extra. I do not make them.

Do you feel that this machine would work well with the Honda Goldwing tires, especially the rear one? That sucker is one stiff tire
@mechsavvy90673 жыл бұрын
I don't see why not. I understand others have done those ultra stiff adventure tires that are part knobby and also very stiff. But I have not done any goldwing tires personally. They are different than normal street tires? The tires in the video are Michelin PR5's which are pretty stiff new. I've done some track tires from friends that were like doing rubber balloons. The PR5's are not like that in any way. But those are targeted at sport touring, not GWs. If you want to bring one by we'll have a beer and try it :)

Nice changer! But hard to tell what the cost plus shipping would be.

I found emailing him to be the best way to get details. Website wasn’t in English (at the time of this review anyway) but he communicated in English via email fine.

Did the Ducatti adaptor come with the tire changer. I ordered one from ebay and it should arrive in a couple of months. I have a Yamaha 2007 FZ-1 and a 2016 Yamaha FJR. Will I need to get a wheel center hole adapter and if so where can I find one. Thanks.
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
No, it was extra. Not part of changer.

I would love to get this tire changer, but it does not seem there’s any adapters for my Decoty available…

Decoty? I got my Ducati wheel adapter from Olmax, it's used in the video.

Hey, one of the crique i have with this "type" of the tyre changer is the tendency to rotate. Rabaconda now offers a street tyre changer now sure if you had a chance to look at it and comment?
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
I have not. I'd be happy to test one if they want to send one.

How well do you think this machine would cope with dirt bike tyres
@mechsavvy9067 Жыл бұрын
Not sure. Should do fine. The changer head shouldn’t cause any tube pinches. But I’ve never done one on it sorry.

very nice review, thanks a lot ! Would you have a link to buy the bead spacer you use at 08:00 to maintain the tire ? They look simple and very efficient !

I sell them. Contact me at the links in the description.

So if the bead doesnt set fully and leaves an area of bubble air escape, is it because not enough lube?
@mechsavvy90674 ай бұрын
Lube shouldn't make a lot of difference there. I've had it happen on super soft track tires where the bead does not hold it's shape well. To get around it, I put a tie down around the "equator" of the tire and tighten. That will push the beads closer to the rim and then you can get it seated.

I can't find a center center adapter for my VFR 800 single sided wheel. the center is only about one and quarter inch (not a big center like the Ducati). It also has to be the style where the two cones thread together like the one in this VID
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
Have you asked Olmax?
@emmettturner94522 жыл бұрын
The center post is simply too thick to fit many wheels. For example, Ninja 250 has 14mm front and 16mm rear axles. You would have to remove the wheel bearing to fit this machine, which is the same problem people have with the Harbor Freight machine where it doesn’t even fit wheels for 1” axels. I understand that a 14mm shaft may not be thick enough to lever on. Perhaps it can have a stepped or cone-shaped collar to secure at the wheel bearing/axel hole and a thicker tube that also secures to a frame at the top (similar to the Harbor Freight unit’s frame) with a 14mm or smaller threaded protrusion to secure through the wheel. If 14mm isn’t the smallest common size then it needs to fit whatever is the smallest.
@mechsavvy90672 жыл бұрын
They offer a smaller shaft accessory

This machine may be exactly what I have been looking for. Awesome review and demonstration - thank you for posting. Do you see any issues with the Butler tire head affixing to a BMW R1200/1250 GS/GSA spoked wheel considering the unique lip of this wheel? See attached photo.
@mechsavvy90673 жыл бұрын
I didn't get any attachment. Not sure that's possible here. You can email me if you like (address in channel properties) and video description. I know a guy who got wheel spacers from me said he used it on a BMW spoked wheel but I don't know which model. And you can ask the maker, he's probably know. I haven't had anyone have me do a BMW yet.

Do you think I'd be able to use this for dirt bikes as well?
@mechsavvy90673 жыл бұрын
I don’t see why not. But I have not done one personally. I measured the base a while back for a similar answer and it appears it will hold a 21” wheel fine. Just give some thought to the rim locks assuming you have rim locks and where you start/end and I’d expect it to do fine. But ask the manufacturer, he will know.
