Your account has gotten me out of so many jams, thank you. Sometimes I choose your videos over my own institutions recorded lectures 😂

One thing this doesn't really cover is painting your backgrounds in a way that implies movement. Yes, you do show linear pans, but I'm talking about having the perspective changes baked into a shot. zoomed all the way out, it looks quite distorted, but once you pan a smaller portion of the frame, it all makes sense. they used this a lot in looney tunes and can be hard to plan out, so maybe that's why it was left out, but its a very effective way of doing things without 3d projection that does more than a simple pan along one axis would do. it emulates a pan and a tilt at the same time.

Instead of doing most of your 2D painting in one tool, and then bringing it into a 3D tool to map it into 3D space, how about using a 3D tool that also includes 2D painting functionality? Blender has this, with its “Grease Pencil” feature. Only, instead of the brush strokes being confined to a flat canvas, they are placed in mid-air. And they are animatable.

An example of painting the background each frame could be something like the “wolf vision” scene from Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers. From what I gather, the environments are laboriously hand drawn to simulate what wolves would see as they run through the forest. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIC4ZX5qmLtges0

Yeah Cool. "The wind rises" had a few shots like that too. Would have loved to include some examples but don't wanna add copyrighted material in the video.

A really helpful breakdown of the different methods! The illusion of depth has always been a neat trick for immersion. I hope to include more AE effects myself… and maybe mapping as well! But that would be a bit down the line.
