The Ithakas Dynasty are a Dynasty of the Necrons. It is in the terminal stages of decline and the Dynasty is currently facing annihilation, at the hands of an Ork invasion.
Oltyx is a disgraced Necron Lord, who is forced to return to his Dynasty in order to bring word of an Ork invasion. This forces him to return to the very court that cast him out, but when Oltyx arrives there, the Lord discovers the Orks are the least of the horrors he will face.

One of the things I like about Oltyx is his capacity for empathy. He can be ruthless when he needs to be, and has nothing but contempt for organics. But whenever he's really mad at someone, he just as often has his rage dissipate when he actually confronts that person and learns their situation. And, obviously, he cared a lot about the needless waste of -human- Necrontyr life, not just as a pragmatic matter but for its own sake. Indeed, a major theme of the novel is the tension between the ruthlessness expected of him as a royal, and his essential compassion and desire for positive change.

Yeah I think the confusion is because of the ceremony and rigidly hierarchical nature of the Necron where Djoseras and Oltyx are a Higher Ranking Lord and Lower Ranking Lord first and brothers second, also Oltyx was being a petulant man child who convinced himself that Djoseras hated him and Djoseras who did legitimately love Oltyx was kinda awkward because they hadn’t been on speaking terms in 300 years.

Man that description of the biotransference sounds like it suggests things about how the viruses started. The people being carted into the furnaces while affected by their disease, sick, dying, dead and starving. Sounds a lot like the maladies of the Necrons, consuming flesh, wanting to wipe out life, breaking down from the inside. Its really tragic of the Necrons that they became machines to run from their frail bodies only for the same afflictions to just come back in a new form.
@Fourtytwo4242

It also makes you hate the old ones, think about watching a race just die, refusing to guide them or help them in anyway, watching these people suffer so badly, to point that, giving up their bodies was seen has the best cure. The old ones could have help them, could have change them, could have guide them to a better future, instead they never even bothered with "lesser races". Does not mean necrons are saints, far from it, but it does mean old ones got what they deserved.

@@Fourtytwo4242 I mean, to be fair it's not like the Necrontyr were going extinct. They just had short lifespans, lifespans which they themselves fully had the power to extend. The nobles had access to healthcare and technology to prolong their lives, they just treated the commoners like dirt and didn't share their wealth. We don't know the Old Ones' motives, but I'm reminded of a lot of real world autocracies, where you have to be really careful when trying to provide charity to them. If you're not, all your good will just lines the pockets of those in power, while the common people only wind up further under the boot of their oppressors.
@Fourtytwo4242

@@the_mad_fool Nobles mostly could extend their lives for 2 years at most. That not a lot of time, yeah more then most necrontyr, but that still only 2 years, along with the pure agony of living through it has the cancer takes over. It like saying "yes it true that you must sleep on bed of spikes but pay only 5 million and you get a bed of spikes with a pillow." Not counting old ones created life from nothing, saying they could not make a cure that only works for lesser classes and not the nobles is just a lie. Truth is old ones just did not care because why would they, they are legit gods now, what a few cancer monkeys going to do to them?
@the_mad_fool
@the_mad_fool 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fourtytwo4242 So, this is a part that Bricky misremembered. In the book they said that they could extend life by as many as *two score* years, not two years. So they did have the technology to substantially increase their lifespan, they just restricted it to the nobility. And let's try not to make too many assumptions about the Old Ones, a race which, let's face it, we know almost nothing about. Sure, it's entirely possible that you are 100% correct, and they refused out of arrogance and apathy. But it's also possible they had other reasons to refuse. We don't actually know *anything* about the Old Ones; not their psychology, their society, nor the limits of their power. It's entirely possible (even likely) that their power has been exaggerated and distorted by millions of years of memory telephone. One of the major themes of this book, even, is the subjectivity of memory, and how badly they get distorted by our minds over time. After millions of years, it's entirely unlikely that even those who personally knew the Old Ones can accurately remember them as they truly were.

Oh bricky something that when you mentioned the flayed ones hunger it reminded me of the old greek myth of king Erysichthon who he fucked up and Demeter cursed him with a never ending hunger to the point that he could eat a cow and still be skin and bones looking like he is at the verge of starvation who gave his money, his land, his crown, and sold his daughter into slavery for food and when his daughter escaped slavery by help of the gods he ate her and the gods got even more pissed and made his hunger worse to the point where he died eating himself
@SuperHalofan64
@SuperHalofan64 2 жыл бұрын
I dont recall her actually being eaten, at least not when I read about the myth generally. IIRC, she kept getting freed by the help of the gods and went back to him, who promptly sold her again. After a few more times, she straight up left, leaving her dad to shake his fist at the gods in anger... only to then eat himself starting with his hands once he noticed that he was essentially made of meat.

Human sacrifices didn't actually happen much in ancient Egypt. During the First Dynasty the sacrifice of servants when a Pharaoh died was a thing, so that they could serve them in the Afterlife, possibly voluntarily by drug overdose and such. However, that tradition only lasted about 300 years and after that point there's little evidence to prove it continued beyond that point. The practice of human sacrifice is much more prevelant in the pyramid building civilisations of Mesoamerica. Also, in reference to the Necrontyr's hyper cancer, I think it's a case where they spent so long under the C'tan destabilized sun of their homeworld that their physiology became horrifically mutated and degraded. So it didn't really matter when they left for other planets, because the damage had been done.

I haven't read the book and I was wondering this entire episode how Unnas would live up to his mythological name. The I went to the comment section and someone mentioned that he committed a great treason and defiled the tomb of the Dynasty's founder, wearing their skin as a mask. Now I understand that GW put some thought into the name. For those not in the know of Egyptian mythology or aren't fans of Death Metal, Unas is a figure in Egyptian mythology who slaughtered many gods and ate their entrails to attain godhood himself (if I recall correctly that's roughly the summary).
