For best results, use a serrated trimming knife not your Kitchen knife. Get one of Good quality that is not light and flexible, you need a Knife that's firm and won't bend when you are trimming.

Thanks for making this video. Should every cake be trimmed before covering? I've noticed that some bakers don't trim the sides of their cake (only the top) yet come out with a smooth finish whereas other tutors make it a law before covering with fondant.
@OluchiImoh3 жыл бұрын
You're most welcome! Thanks for watching. It is very important to do so as it goes a long way in determining the final finishing and outcome of the Cake. You can get away with not trimming the sides of Buttercream cakes as you can fill up the spaces with the buttercream when crumbcoating and no one will notice after decorating but for Fondant, you can't (that's why they make it a law 🙂) else you would have an uneven finish with dents and bulges. And it actually depends on how the cakes turn out, I mean in terms of the sizes and based on the type of pan used. If the layers are uneven at the sides, please trim for a perfect finish. Hope this is clear?

You're most welcome! I haven't seen that done and I won't advise it because it would dry fast and become hard when it sets and what you actually need is something soft that your Buttercream or Fondant can stick to.
