I am an LA transplant who has called Olympia home for the past seven years. As an artist myself I chose to retire here because of its vibrant art/music scene. We have beautiful murals all over the downtown area. The State Theatre is not "boarded up"; Harlequin Productions produces wonderful plays there all of the time. You heard a chicken laying an egg when you were driving around that neighborhood. Towns without graffiti, crime and homelessness are rare these days. I absolutely love Olympia and have had no regrets choosing to relocate here.

they dredged the harbour which is super polluted from Cascade poll - a very polluted place, bringing in ships way too large to a very corrupt port shipping off old growth to China for cheap after making deals to put mills out of business here and to provide offshore Chinese milling.

Local since 1985. Love all your tours...been following for a year. Loved THIS TOUR OF OLY. Wish we could have given you some info for your tour... btw: The State Theater you pass...is not boarded up...and is VERY ACTIVE...with live plays all year round...very community oriented. One big reason for high crime: Because we're the State Capitol...all services can be had here (as far as government provided)...aka, it draws many people who are in freefall to want to live here. Outside of downtown....very quiet... I live 1 miles (walking) from dt. You'd think you were in a forest. In fact, your opening shot..of the statue....is looking west toward my home across the bay...really wish you would have driven up that way along the bay....MANY INLETS of Puget Sound, so LOTS OF ON THE WATER HOMES. You can set sail here, and go around the world.

Currently live here. You forgot to go by the hospital and the HUGE homeless camps. there is a road going to the hospital that is lined with broken down rvs. The amount of homelessness and drugs is awful. The state take payers were charged with 800,000 dollars for big boulders for them to palce under the overpasses and along the highways and under our trees to prevent homeless from camping. I havent seen downtown that clean in years! This used to be a beautiful place to live years ago😢

Washington State Legislature is only in session for selected months annually. This makes commerce and hospitality difficult because many restaurants and motels have occasional seasonal occupancy. Other than during legislative times Olympia is a bit “out of the way” and not a super hot tourism spot.

Thanks for visiting my states capitol city. Like any larger city here we have our share of issues homelessness being one of the larger ones. The State theatre is very much open, the building is presently having a major interior renovation done as a good friend of mine works there. Harlequin Productions puts on spectacular shows which many people have raved about. I highly recommend any visitor thats up for great live theatre to check out a show...you won't be disappointed. A few fun facts about the capitol building itself..our current one that is. The flags you saw in the four corners of the rotunda represent each of our 39 counties with King County being the largest where Seattle is located. The exterior of the dome does get cleaned usually every 3-5 years or so given the dingy look the moss and other elements that live upon it. The building is also modeled after our nations capitol in D.C.. We are also the only state in the country whose flags primary color is green which is fitting given we are The Evergreen State. As for restaurants in town, there are so many and the vast majority are very good places based on personal experience and from what friends of mine have told me. I am glad your dining experience was a good one. Thanks for visiting and I hope your visit was a positive one and that you will return in the future.

So, random story, but I have to share. I was in Lincoln City, Oregon this last week on vacation. I roll into a pizza place (shoutout to Tie Dye Pizza) for lunch and order. While the pizza is being made/cooked, I start chatting with the person working (I presume the owner) and the topic of homelessness in Portland gets brought up. As the conversation carries along, he starts talking about this KZbin channel he watches where they went to Oakland a couple weeks ago and he couldn't believe what he saw on the video. As he is telling me this, my gears start turning in my head, as I saw a similar video about a week before. Before I could say anything, he tells me it's a husband and wife that travels from city to city documenting it on KZbin. Joe & Nic. Whoa!!! That's the same channel I watch. So, yeah, small world. Thought that was funny. Also, I really enjoyed the pizza I had. If anybody is ever in Lincoln City, stop by there and order yourself a pizza.

It's sad to say, but we have a gang problem here along with a homelessness with drug problems as well. Tourism, especially in the spring and summer time, is a big bundle of money for these businesses. So they have to go out and clean up to make sure everything is beautiful to keep that money coming in. Washington is a beautiful state. some areas are getting corrupted in a bad way. But there is so much more beauty to Washington than just these little areas.

Hey happy Sunday! I really like the opening sequence walking along the waterfront--one of my favorite things to do is wander around and take pics of boats with imaginative names. Great to see the folks doing their part cleaning up the littler! Regarding graffiti: when "artists" use public and private property as their "canvas", I believe the correct term is vandalism. There are some places that have designated alleys or walls for graffiti, and that's cool, I can get behind that. The Cajun shrimp appetizer looks delicious!

When I was a young kid we lived in Olympia. My dad worked for the state. We lived in the neighborhood just south of the Capitol grounds, which is a very nice part of town. After a year or two there we moved just north of town and lived on the waterfront in Butler cove for a couple of years then my parents bought a home on the east side of the bay. Yes, back in the 50s a civil servant could afford waterfront property in Olympia. I don't think that is true now. The really nice homes are on the shore NW and NE of downtown on either side of Budd Inlet. In the late 60s we lived in Lacey just northeast of Olympia proper. I always thought of downtown Olympia as a bit dumpy and I see it hasn't changed much since I lived there. The Capitol grounds are beautiful though.

I live 20 minutes north of Olympia and I love both Oly and my own small town. But please, feel no pressure to move here. It's a terrible place. Just awful. Some of us are just crazy enough to love it.

Looking at your date, the reason so many people are cleaning up is because they are preparing for the bi annual Arts Walk. Arts Walk is in the first weekend of October and the last weekend of April.

Great opening ground and drone footage! Love the old Capitol building! Would love to tour that building! Love the water Springs. I think it’s cool the alleys are named. But it is sad the graffiti has marred the city. Very nice homes around Olympia. Gorgeous rotunda at the Capitol building. Love the chandelier. Your food looked delicious. Looking forward to seeing Spokane!

$26 for a few ounces of Stroganoff is a bit much, but I'm surprised the pie only cost $11 since it was more difficult to do right.

Now come to Canada, we would love to have you Victoria BC right across from Washington On Vancouver Island BC.. I think the clean up people are more like criminal community services people than volunteers. In a town with crime as high as they have I doubt there are too many who clean up out of the goodness of their hearts. Where I live they have criminals picking up waste along the highways and sweeping sidewalks and other community services for part of their penalties.

I’ve spent many nights in Olympia/Lacey. It’s the closest safe, boring, affordable place to Seattle for a quick hotel stay on a business trip. This last trip was interesting. The previously sleepy and clean hotel had thick plexiglass around the check-in desk and warnings about keeping your car locked, plus advisories to guests that visitors were not welcome after hours, no hair dye in the bathtub, etc. Talked to a bartender who said the whole area had gone ghetto in a matter of months. Sad.

Looks like Annapolis west except Olympia is not nearly as old and is a bit of a dump. Pretty sad when they have to lock the dumpsters. WOW, the more I watch the less it seems like Annapolis west. I only said that because of the statehouse being near the water and all the boats.
