SPOKANE: Beautiful & Dangerous...It's Both

I've lived in Spokane since 1975. It's a beautiful city, especially after the trees have leafed out and the flowers bloom. Just FYI - only the younger generations call it Hooptown, something that was just recently pinned on us by city leaders. For the rest of us, we'll always be the Lilac City. Thanks for visiting; your cinematography is gorgeous. Lots of places you missed that are worth the visit. We have some gorgeous parks, a state park within city limits, some beautiful neighborhoods. Hope you can visit again.

I was born and raised in Washington, some of the most beautiful and scenic areas in the 50 states. When I was growing up we went to Seattle all the time, visited Spokane and Tacoma and it was nothing like what you see today. Poor leadership and policies change this into what it is now and the reason we left there. Thank you for sharing the video.

Spokane native here.... If you read the inscriptions on the veteran statue @ 3:50, on the west-facing side you will find the name of "JOHN RAMBO". He was a real person! Also, the city hall building used to be the Montgomery Wards department store when i was a kid. So glad they didn't tear it down!

Born and raised in Spokane. Since COVID, house prices have doubled here. It is part of the contributing factor of the rise in homelessness and crime. We have had a large influx of people moving here around 2020 and this caused the prices to double. It is a beautiful place and there is a lot more to it than this video.

@theprecipiceofreason actually in Spokane, the South Hill was developed by one of the original founders and he saved dedicated acreage for the common good up there, now park of Manito Park, a conservatory, and a formal garden for exercise. It used to have a zoo at one point too I believe. Lots of mansions with Sears Craftsman kits and then mixed with war boxes from the 40-50's. The larger neighbourhood is amazing for all the different housing styles and what wonderful shape they are still in. Unlike soggier climates in Western WA.

I know people love to remember things through rose-tinted glasses, but I'm old enough to remember Spokane as a bit worn down ag town. So to me, it looks pretty good. As for homeless: I assume a large contributor is being on a major interstate, I-90. I know along I-40, Albuquerque and Amarillo, places with extremely low cost of living, still have far more homeless than you'd imagine.

I live in Spokane, and you did a pretty good job of describing Riverfront Park. The cable cars take you down to the falls you see in your opening shots, and back. It takes about twenty minutes. The pavilion you said where you can “small concerts” is the Expo ‘74 Pavilion. I once saw a performance by the Spokane Symphony there. During the holidays it’s lit up with Christmas lights and puts on quite a show.

Fantastic video. Really collects the full scope of Spokane. As far as great tasting tarter sauce, a regional restaurant favorite is a place called Zip's. Great video. I grew up 2 hours south of Spokane, it was always the big city to me. I was 9 when we went up to Expo '74. We also marched in a few parades in high school band, and played against a few teams in football there. My sister worked at Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff and Petts when it opened in our home town. It has long since closed. My Father's life was extended by excellent heart surgeons there in Spokane, so I appreciate that. And I love Zip's. Thanks again for another excellent video.

Thank you for the video. I realize that you two were just passing through and you could only shoot so much. I grew up in Spokane ’61-63 and again ’70- ’14 when I moved to Austin TX. for work. FYI ..LoL City Hall was the old Montgomery Ward’s store. The County courthouse is so awesome (I have a print on my wall at the house). Clinkerdagger’s is a fabulous restaurant, kind of on the high end. It was that special place to go if you have great grades or it was your birthday. I hope you got a chance to walk around in the Flour Mill and look at all the shops. I gather that you didn’t get to stop by “Dick’s Hamburgers” for a “Whammy” I’ll follow along you trip now that I found it.

I loved my time in Spokane in '90-'94 when I was stationed at Fairchild AFB just west of town. It's unfortunate you missed Manito Park south of town, and some of the upscale old neighborhoods. Spokane seems to have always had the weird (to me) situation of having neighborhoods and crime transition abruptly, sometimes in only just one block. You can be in the upscale old-money Browne's Addition and then in only a short distance, you're in an undesirable spot. It's terrible how high crime has risen in the decades since I lived there.

Lived in Spokane for 4 years nearly 50 years ago. It was beautiful and so clean. I still remember the tram rides over the river and loved the restaurants hanging over the waterfall. Excellent parks, great places to explore. Many little lakes to fish and camp. Cold snowy winters.

Dalton Bookseller downtown, designed the logo for Auntie's Bookstore (and later Uncle's Games) and Merlyn's Comics and Games ... the best restaurant was The Espresso Deliscioso on Monroe just north of the Monroe Street Bridge!

I was in Spokane last year. Walked all around the downtown and I liked it. Nice parks, old Worlds Fair stuff. Rivers, rapids. A brewery that donates all profits to the local Doggie and Kitty Humane Society. People hanging out. Nice drone views here! I didn't go anywhere else.

Thankyou for doing our town! I enjoyed it. "Near Nature, Near Perfect" was the slogan when we moved here 15 years ago. It might not be perfect but there are far worse, elsewhere. Home prices did finally skyrocket. That home on Bernard was going for $799k last time I looked, but it would've only been well under 500k when we first moved here. Would've been great to run into you two, we only live a few blocks north of Clinkerdagger. North Central neighborhood. It's true, West Central is considered the "bad neighborhood" but it is great for what it is, and I grew up in the bay area. In Alameda, just west of Oakland. It's that pretty nice bedroom community, an island in the bay, though....

I lived in Spokane for 6 years before leaving in 2022. I think for the length of time your video was you did a good job showing the city. My view of the crime rate is there is a lot of drug related petty crime, car break ins... lots of homeless but my hometown is San Diego and I think it is even worse there. I don't have a clue how to solve the homeless and drug problems but maybe spend a little more money on social programs and less on foreign wars.

My son is moving to Seattle and I told him to make sure to check for the best area to live even if it costs more. He is renting a long-term hotel and storage for one month to have time to look around. I just can't pay the prices for eating out nowadays it's gotten too crazy. I moved from south Florida up to here. One thing I would say is that if you're used to a sunny place then it might be a little much at first. The scenery makes up for it and nothing beats Seattle on a clear day. When Mt Rainier is just towering over the views

Good luck in the apartment search. Rent is sky high, and crime is up. Never leave anything in the car. Crime is just as high in good neighborhoods because the criminals find it to be good hunting grounds. Friendliest place is the Quarterdeck in the Des Moines marina. Coffee, beer, wine. Great walk along the pier. People bring their dogs and kids , lots of outdoor seating, a big heated tent in bad weather. Live music, trivia nights. It’s sort of like Cheers- everyone knows your name and your dog’s name. Seattle is famous for the Seattle Freeze but the Quarterdeck is the exception.

My husband is from Spokane originally and we still have family in the area. Unfortunately the homelessness has been a problem for a long long time especially in the downtown area.

I was thinking about how all these people from different countries in Europe came here with amazing skills. Those skills built these beautiful buildings. I would imagine it would be hard to find anyone capable of having such outstanding skills today. I worked with an older gentleman from Germany. His skill was plaster. When I met him, he worked in a kitchen. My dad had a 1st cousin who moved to Washington from the south. When he visited, he took him Salmon fishing. He also showed Dad a bear that had been skinned handing in an outbuilding. Dad said that the bear looked like a man when naked. Dad came home so excited. Thanks, Jim and Nic. Another great video.

What a shame about the crime there!! I lived in Spokane in the 80's. I'm surprised tho that you didn't film the SkyWalks downtown. I worked down there and would go thru the Skywalk to lunch often.

The Skywalks are still there but almost all the shops that made them interesting have closed. Not much to see there I'm afraid.

Lived in the Pac NW for a number of years, now down in CO. Spokane is in a super cool part of the state as far as recreational and the fact that it's the sunny side of the state.

Clinkerdaggers used to be Clinkerdagger, Bickerstaff and Petts. They usdd to have multiple locations in the Northwest and the first time I ate in one was in Anchorage. I believe Spokane is the only one left. Overpriced but they pack ‘em in. Food is outstanding. Spokane is a fascinating area. Too bad you’re zooming around so fast. To the southwest is The Palouse -very interesting and scenic terrain. East and northeast are Lake Coeur d’ Alene Lake Pend Oreille-both spectacular.

Born ‘53 & Raised in Spokane. Left in 1983. Fond memories, oldest first: Nat Park, Captain Cy, Starlit Stairway, Chiller Theatre, Friday night football at Joe Albi Stadium, Dicks & Zips Burgers, cruising the gut, sparking at Cliff Drive, keggers at 9 mile, West End Dive In (2 bucks a car load), State Line Idaho (El Patio, Gardens, Kon Tiki) and finally hours watching planes land at Geiger Field (GEG) which ultimately led to an aviation career. I will always love Spokane.

Born in Spokane back in 66. Lived there until 1988 when I joined the Air Force. Lived near and went to North Central high school. The area was a bit rough back then but no homeless or drug addicts hanging around at least back then. I go back every few years to visit a friend but man has Spokane turned into a cesspool. You use to run into a few homeless downtown under the freeway overpass by Dicks drive in but now the homeless and drug addicts can be found on what seems to be every street in Spokane. I mean they are absolutely EVERYWHERE. I’ve considered moving back there but when I do come back just to visit I am more and more convinced to stay away. It’s a real shame. Use to be a pretty good place.

Well I live here all my life and I’m 56 I do agree with some of what you are saying but it’s not all true either i’m not gonna get into details over either or arguing about it, but all I’m saying is a lot of what you and some are saying is a little on the BS One it doesn’t matter where are you go you’ll find the same stuff. @@Darkstar301 I live here and he's slightly exaggerating, but the homeless pockets are all over the city. There are many places that don't have these kind of problems. We are steered by the Western half of the state and they are far left. Of course it's not as bad as Seattle, they are a port city with a much larger population. It's always been proportionately worse. Our city council is consistently leftist and their policies have allowed these things to fester for years now. Scumbags come here to get the benefits and to get away with victimizing the community.

The high criminal rate is something I did not expect. But I did not expect Sopkane to be that huge either. I am German. The US that I have travelled through ist history now. I lived in Spokane for a couple of years, I had a blast! That’s not to say I didn’t see some weird stuff. Definitely try Durkins Liquor Bar when you’re there again! It’s a small restaurant with a secret bar in the basement!

Enjoyed this video a lot, not many videos on youtube about my hometown like this. I was born and raised here, been here 18 years. Housing has definitely got ridiculous when it comes to pricing. crime has most definitely gotten worse, lots of gun violence and killings and whatnot. Tons of open drug use EVERYWHERE, cops dont do anything because they decriminalized everything, so that sucks. But i love it here, and it will be hard to leave if i ever choose to. From what ive heard and seen over the years, when you move from spokane, you normally gravitate back.

Born and raised 60 minutes from Spokane. The city proper has turned into a boil on the butt of humanity, mostly due to (like most cities in similar situations) mismanagement from the highest offices of the land. The Valley and many suburbs are still great and a few (the South Hill) is absolutely gorgeous full of local history and well maintained old houses. As I get older, the downtown is a place I try to avoid whenever possible. The Davenport Hotel (the original) is amazing, with wonderful history that they’ve done a great job to keep alive!

I used to go to Spokane once and a while when I lived in Vancouver B.C. It's amazing that a city of about 230,000 would host a Worlds Fair. Nice looking meal you two had. I make my own Tartar sauce. I'm a little surprised at the price of the appetizer.

Thanks for the ride along beautiful country indeed. Nice city seemed like. Some great buildings and yeah opulent was indeed the word that came to mind on the courthouse. And that church also really nice. Some great neighborhoods.The upper crust neighborhood was really nice. But have to agree with you the one that supposedly was the high crime area just didn’t look like it. I remember several you have shown that had I been riding along would have been locked and loaded. LoL. But it has to be there somewhere according to those stats on crime. Really looking forward to your visit to Montana love that part of the country. But not in winter. LoL safe travels my friend keep filming and I’ll keep watching.
