This is amazing. Obviously you could've blown these kids out of the water, but you used this as a way to be a coach on the course. As he passed each group, he was coaching them up on their specific position in the race. When he reaches the front, with Isaac, there's no doubt he could've darted straight past him, but instead, Nick decides he will push him and really coach him up. Great role model.

@George G. But he took a slow start and was talking to the others to give advice. So he could have won if he wanted (stay closer to the front, no talking), but yes after starting the way he did, even going all out was not enough.

@@ProGamer-dg7dy km splits were 3:39 (3:39) | 3:33 (7:12) 4:05 (11:17). Overall, this was 3:46/km (6:03/mile), sub-19 5k pace. I think the kids were excited to be running with Nick, maybe had the idea that Nick would "sit and kick" in their heads and wanted to run the kick out of him. He's definitely talented at 13. Just went out a little bit hard is all, common with youth and inexperience. At the age of 13 you aren't going to have all the years of aerobic development that long-time distance runners have, nor the experience with pacing. With better pacing discipline which comes with experience, I think the kid is capable of holding this pace for 5k, would do sub-20 easily. Remember that most kids this age struggle to hold this pace for even one mile.

Nick. I don't know how much you train to keep your kick sharp enough but I have to tell you. The wide angle and the HUD calling yourself the bison in the 3rd person and some epic chase down music remembering what track n field kicks you've decimated races with. It's just THE right recipe. Whether it's middle schoolers other retired elites or anything in between. It's your brand and I love it.

There's 0 chance he couldn't beat that kid. A 13 year old simply does not have the capability to outsprint a fit adult. Anyway, I'm glad he didn't go for first place because it would have looked bad.

I’m a 13 year old girl. Last year in 7th was my first time doing cross country which is 2 miles and my fastest mile was 6:47. My fastest time was 13:39.7 and I placed 4th. I stopped running for 3 months but now I’m training to get my time again. I can run 3 miles in 24:56 without stopping. I have 4 months left to train for my 8th grade cross country and can’t wait for high school!

That is amazing. A 6:47 mile is incredibly fast for a 7th grade girl, who most likely has never had any competitive running experience previously. I am a boy and when I was a freshman in high school and was on the Cross Country team I was not able to run anywhere close to a 6:47 mile for that entire season but during Track & Field season my 1600m time got down to a 6:45, which is 9 meters short of a mile. But seriously, a 6:47 mile for a female with probably no proper training experience previously is one of a kind. You have some true potential.

I am sure that Nick Symmonds even as an older runner could beat those boys. He was being gracious. I remember as a teenager running a half marathon with Craig Virgin. I beat him but had no doubt that he could have trounced me at any time. He may have been using it as a training run but he certainly didn’t look like he was hurting like I was. Great run Nick and middle schoolers. You have a bright future ahead of you!
