Sarah, the translation puts the “I” in Hinata’s sentences. In Japanese, they tend to not use subjects like I or We since the language is always contextual. So his statement could be interpreted as either “I am going to beat” or “We are going to beat”.

That's right. In Japanese, the subject is often omitted. Especially in conversation.
@Ryan_gogaku2 жыл бұрын
9:26 Don't worry. It's actually just like last episode: Hinata doesn't actually say "I" or "me" here. It's just 2 words in Japanese: - datou (打倒), "overthrow / take down" - dai-ousama (大王様), "great king" So, you could equally say "We're going to take him down," or "Karasuno's going to take him down" or even just "Down with the Great King." There's no pronoun at all in the Japanese, but that makes no sense in English, so they had to put something, and they went with "I." He's not being selfish.
@milkntomatoes94182 жыл бұрын
Echoing this again cos Sarah probably missed the comments from last episode. Hinata didn't use any pronouns in his sentence just like last time. The translator probably isnt that familiar with how much of a difference the pronoun makes and just assumes he's saying "I."
@ichigoparfaitgatomaranai2 жыл бұрын
An excellent point here, hope Sarah sees it
@Ryan_gogaku2 жыл бұрын
@@milkntomatoes9418 Yeah, I think maybe they said I because they thought it'd match better with Kageyama saying "that's *my* line" afterwards (こっちの台詞だ)? Translation is tough. It's always a compromise.
@milkntomatoes94182 жыл бұрын
@@Ryan_gogaku That makes a lot of sense, but then the two also compete on a lot of things that don't make sense or don't merit them in any way (like who gets to step into the gym first when Tanaka was already first) so it could've also simply been a competition of who gets to say "We will beat Seijoh" first. Also, I've been translating professionally for 7 years now, so I definitely understand how difficult translating can be, but that might also be the reason why I tend to nitpick official translations when they lack contextual accuracy😅

Mad dog's name is Kyoutani Kentaro and just like Ushiwaka(Ushijima Wakatoshi,anyway, I forgot if kyoken was the right spell or if it was kyouken) Oikawa joined the first two syllables of their name and family name to make nicknames for them, and kyoken means mad dog so the nickname really do be fitting him.

The timing of your uploads is always so perfect! “Diarrhea pressure point” is kind of real :"D It's an acupuncture point often referred to as Hyakue. It's not really clear whether it’s supposed to cause or stop diarrhea, but apparently it might’ve been a thing in Japanese schools to press that point on the top of one’s head as a way to mess around with people x) Also, the blue T-shirt Hinata’s wearing here originated from the manga; Nishinoya gave one to everyone on a team with a saying that he seemed fit. Hinata’s says 大器晩成 - an idiom meaning “Great talents mature late”. But on this T-shirt the 成 (“growth”) character is missing a stroke (an actual mistake by the author, which they later apologized for). In the CD drama based off of that, Tsukki teased Hinata for his incorrect "growth"~ Hinata saying "I" a lot is actually a somewhat nice detail, esp with some future developments in mind. He is extremely competitive and hungry for improvement, sometimes to a point where it can be detrimental (gotta say though, it works a bit differently in Japanese where they don't actually pronounce "I" nearly as often as we do). Just a guess, but I think the shiver was to show us the passage of time and that it's getting colder, so we're getting closer to the qualifiers!

9:25 Actually Hinata didn't say I. It's quite usual to have no subject in a sentence in Japanese, like here what Hinata just said. One can take it as we're gonna beat the great king or I'm gonna beat the great king. It's up to the one who heard the sentence. So I think Hinata didn't mean it.
@milkntomatoes94182 жыл бұрын
Fr tho, I really appreciate that people dislike Johzenji for that incident with Kiyoko (even if it's just at first), bcos while they didn't rlly get to do anything bad thanks to Hinata's intervention, that kind of attitude towards female managers at sports events really shouldn't be tolerated. Apparently female managers of Japanese high school sports clubs rlly do get hit on a lot (even by their own team's players) esp during tournaments, but the managers are also usually well-respected.

Great watch as usual (I feel sorry for the "ugly" characters, though. LOL). Leaving my support as usual along with my personal opinions about some of the iffy subs as usual. 5:48 「無理でしょ、全国トップ3のエースなんて。紛れならまだしも。」➔ "Even if it was pure luck, he's the ace of a team in the national Top Three" This should be more like "It's not very probable against an ace who's (in the) nation's top 3. Not unless it's by a fluke." Their translation makes it seem like the TEAM is top 3 in the nation rather than Ushiwaka himself being 1 of the top 3 aces. 8:34 「でも及川さんは、例えあの人を嫌ってる奴とか」➔ "But with Oikasa-san, it didn't matter if he disliked the player" This should be "But with Oikawa-san, even someone who might dislike him (Oikawa)" Their translation makes it seem like Oikawa is doing the "disliking", but it's clearly the other way around. Another case of pronoun mistakes. 11:12 The 「打倒大王様ぁ!」(9:24) Like others have already explained, there's no pronoun in the Japanese sentence, just like what happened last time. Hopefully, she reads those comments. 15:04 「いきなり当時の3年と衝突してさ」& 15:18「その後も当時の3年とは険悪だし」➔”But he suddenly butted heads with the third years" & "His attitude toward the third years didn't change" These should be more like "He clashed with the 3rd yrs at that time right off the bat" & "(The atmosphere between him & ) the 3rd yrs at the time stayed really bad afterwards". The main problem with these lines is that they left out 「当時の」for some reason. They're talking about the 3rd yrs when Kyoutani was a 1st yr & Oikawa was a 2nd yr, but their translation doesn't make that very clear. Kyoutani's line about the CURRENT 3rd yrs still not retired right afterwards makes things confusing.
