Two quick things: - Regarding spoilers - as said in the spoiler warning in the beginning, this video is intended for people who have watched the first four seasons of Haikyuu in their entirety. However, the last few minutes will touch on post-anime material from the manga, so anime-onlys will probably want to stop watching there. However, I give a verbal warning for that in the video so don’t worry about missing it as long as you’re listening. Although for convenience, the timestamp for when I begin talking about it is 27:20! - For manga readers who may be curious - I didn’t talk much about some of the later manga material relating to the concept of hunger, muscle and food and how it relates to the Inarizaki boys, and instead limited this primarily to Atsumu, his journey, his relationship with Osamu and how “Who Needs Memories” translates into the muscle concept for Atsumu specifically. I’m intentionally leaving that angle open for whenever the anime may catch up to that point, in case I ever want to cover it. Because it’s a concept that definitely deserves it’s own examination and this video was long enough already. So if you’re wondering why I kinda danced around and only touched upon how hunger and food and where Kita/Osamu/Atsumu are in their respective arcs relate to that, this is why. Thanks!

Atsumu is such an interesting character. There isn't a huge amount of time spent on giving him screen time in the whole series but you can talk about him forever, so many layers to him and his relationships.

It is. I admit I didn't have a favorite character in the series, BUT Atsumu (and the way he fell in love with the way Hinata plays volleyball) became my favorite character. I read the manga for him and I fell in love with his psychology and his devoted love for volleyball. His relationship with Osamu, uff. His growth. He's so complex and terrible and loving and caring and a jerk and I love him.

I love Atsumu soo much and I especially like how he just falls in love with the way Hinata plays volleyball, because Hinata and Atsumu actually have a very similar approach to playing, both demand that their team members do everything they can it is just that Atsumu is way more vocal about it and Hinata let's his actions speak more. It is a match made in heaven 'cause Hinata respect the setters role but is also constantly challenging him and Atsumus reaction to that would probably be along the lines of "there I did all I could now you better do something with that."

To be honest I liked Atsumu, the first time he talks to Tobio and tells him "I thought you would be prickly, but you're just a goody two shoes inside and outside the court." It showed that he actually didn't judge Kageyama as a "king of the court" like everyone else, instead he saw his kind nature and was able to read him without so little time with him, he was capable of seeing both Kageyama's strength and weakness and subtly used it during the match between Karasuno vs Inarizaki. Atsumu has some similarities to both Oikawa and Kageyama, he has talent and loves volleyball, he is known as the best setter in all the prefecture not to mention that he was disliked by his teammates when he acted somewhat arrogant and had the mindset of 'you gotta keep up to be my equal'. But like you said in the video, Atsumu had Osamu with him to straighten him out and remind his brother that not everyone is perfect and that it's okay to mess up, he's human like everyone else. Not to mention that Oikawa had Iwaizumi to straighten him out as well, whereas Kageyama had no one until he met Hinata, someone who saw his flaws and accepted them. Atsumu isn't brash or standoffish, he's actually a good guy with a burning desire to play volleyball and isn't a jerk on purpose. Some of my friends don't like Atsumu because they think he's a copy cat of Oikawa but a better version, but after seeing this video I'll have a better way of trying to convince them on why Atsumu's not a copy cat and is his own character.

what atsumu meant by goody-two-shoes was kageyama is a bit subservient to the spikers with how he caters to them with the exact sets they want, (because kageyama asks the spikers in the camp what set they want and asks for feedback) unlike how atsumu just takes everything into account himself, sets perfectly, and then lets the spiker deal with it. i can see the point of him not judging kageyama tho, and that's just how he is i guess. he's a bit egoistic and doesn't really view anyone as a "threat", and actually is very fascinated by strong opponents or plays. which is why i don't see how he's a copycat version of oikawa but better lol. seeing as oikawa is burdened and threatened by more "talented" or "special" people like kageyama and ushijima, while atsumu on the other hand is fascinated by them and love watching them, playing against them or even playing with them. there's such a stark difference so i'm curious why others have that opinion of him

@@reiiiko To be honest neither do I, I don't understand why they and others think of Atsumu in that retrospect. They're both skilled and well known setters but like you said Atsumu is fascinated by strong opponents and doesn't feel threatened by anyone, he just wants to play the sport and plays to his abilities taking into account the sets he tosses to his teammates. Whereas Oikawa saw Kageyama and Ushijima as two threats and felt intimidated by their skills as well as left out because he felt that they were far superior in skills, he didn't see their hard work or struggles he only saw their increased growth. This is also somewhat mentioned to what Kita said about people doing more than 100% and the results of their hard work are paid off and they aren't born "gifted" or had "natural talent", an excuse other characters; like Oikawa have said in regards to Kageyama, Atsumu and even Hinata. Which is one thing I like about watching Atsumu's play during the matches because Kita's words definitely match the snippets of young Atsumu and his drive to play volleyball as well as sets the entire mood of the game in general because of his words tearing away at the "was already gifted to begin with" philosophy *I apologize for rambling at the end*

@@genesisshuler7288 it's fine 😂. i often end up writing long-ass paragraphs about haikyuu as well because of how great the writing is. and yeah, kita's words really did peel off the concept of "genius", even if many people referred to kageyama as that throughout the show, and highlighted how hardwork is still what's behind their supreme abilities. the difference of atsumu and oikawa though had actually been laid down from the start. they're the two people that have contradicting ideals in kageyama's head in the middle of his development. kageyama had been following oikawa's advice of giving the spikers the exact sets they WANT, which was what atsumu witnessed kageyama doing in the youth camp and the reason why he called kageyama a goody-two-shoes. kageyama's dilemma started because of this, alongside him seeing atsumu's "if they can't hit my tosses they just suck" attitude. another difference is their pride. oikawa's pride is kind of more on winning and he also takes it personally, seeing how he handled ushijima in the end of the 2nd season. this approach is very realistic though tbh. while atsumu is very different since he didn't go through the same insecurities and experiences as oikawa did. his pride is more on setting itself and playing, which is highlighted by his fascination of strong players and not only wanting to play AGAINST them but also WITH them. like how he declared that he'll toss to hinata one day even if he just lost to karasuno. as was said in the video, he loves having "monsters dancing to his tune" in reference to him liking strong players as his spikers.

@@reiiiko I love how you summarized things in a way that is both understandable and admirable, I also love how you added the differences between Oikawa's influence on how Kageyama plays to Atsumu's words to him during the training camp. The show of Oikawa's insecurities against Ushijima and Kageyama were definitely shown throughout Season 1 and when Aobajohsai lost to Karasuno in Season 2 (sorry for spoiling this for anyone who reads this) he took it personally because he wouldn't get the chance to face Ushijima, however the part where he talks to him and tells him that Kageyama isn't good like him, but has teammates who will help him also shows that Oikawa was willing to let his personal feelings go. When Atsumu comes in Oikawa is gone and this setter is just as experienced, he is confident and assertive in his abilities to match his plays, he doesn't look calculating even though he's very perspective. The way he plays shows that he takes great pleasure in playing with strong opponents, when he sees Hinata and Kageyama's quick he is eager and his eyes glint like a child. It's interesting how Atsumu's attitude towards Hinata when he first met him was disinterest, it boggles me how when Hinata missed his spike Atsumu was comforting and told him that it was fine, then his curiosity spiked up when he saw that Kageyama wasn't the only one "Who marched to his own drum" and his focus shifted to Hinata and the more Inarizaki played against Karasuno, Atsumu's mood changed gradually, he was having the time of his life and didn't seem too upset about losing the game since he still looked at Kageyama with respect and acknowledgement then confidently told Hinata that he will set for him one day. It does show that he acknowledges stronger opponents and he does want to stay on the court playing against and with others with the same drive *I really gotta stay on topic, but I'm the same way when it comes to well written characters and amazing story telling. I'm just so passionate about discussing these characters with someone else*

@@reiiiko What you said is apt but I feel Oikawa's advice has been hugely misinterpreted. When Oikawa told Kageyama that he needed to give his spikers the sets they want, he meant it with reference to Hinata. At that point in the story Kageyema refused to believe in Hinata and his ability to fight mid air battles by himself, Oikawa's advice actually pushed Kageyama to believe more in Hinata and the duo really saw growth in their synergy from there. Kageyama however took Oikawa's advice to face value and completely forgot that while it was a setter's job to give spikers freedom in the air, it was also his job to push their limits. Oikawa was completely right in what he told Kageyema, the latter just didn't comprehend it fully.

when atsumu set up the ball from crouched position and smiled genuinely after his spiker score with it, the manga chapter simply titled as 'love' or 'ai'. the love for the game, the love for the ball, the love for his spikers. the type of love that's capable of making such an proud, demanding personality into a selfless person. i dont recall any other chapter titled with 'love' word in its title. and for furudate sensei to finally use such a powerful word 'love' in a chapter focusing on atsumu is just, wow.

Furudate used the word LOVE to describe Atsumu in the Illustration book as well. He really created Atsumu to embody the word in such an unconventional way that even the ones that have a "bad personality" have such an immense and intense love if only you look a little bit closer.

kita seems to extrapolate atsumu’s hunger for volleyball to his philosophy for approaching life - one is built upon the foundation of their daily actions and intents; thus, they both highly value individual accountability and responsibility. they also both disregard fear entirely - atsumu, because he wholeheartedly desires the freedom of being a monster, and kita, because he trusts deeply in the habits he’s ingrained into the fabric of his being. i think that’s why kita gravitates towards monsters like atsumu; they manage to hone and sharpen their uninhibited instinct through deliberate choice and effort. he sees his quiet philosophy realized through theatrics and glorious spectacle, even though that hunger shown by characters like atsumu would seem to totally run counter to his beliefs. they are free *because* they have demonstrated habitual discipline - why wouldn’t kita constantly talk about how proud he is of his teammates? also, kita is best boy. calling it

What really intrigued me about his character is, as much as he loves having spikers dancing to his tune, he originally took interest in being a setter because he heard his coach saying, "I'll letcha hit it nice and easy." So he's drawn to that act of giving, support, and selflessness, even though he usually acts like a demanding prick, and that contrast makes it really interesting to dissect his personality and make me wonder would he ever display those qualities off the court, and how that plays into his relationship with others.

Your take on that line is interesting. My interpretation of that line has always been the exact opposite. I believe that instead of wanting to support or being selfless, Atsumu heard "I'll LET you hit it nice and easy" as if the setter is giving permission for the hitter to touch the ball. It's along the same lines of thinking as Kageyama, the setter is the position that touches the ball the most and coordinates the teams offense. Given Atsumu's hunger and dedication to volleyball and his drive to always be the best, him wanting control of who he "lets" hit the ball has always made more sense to me. Atsumu is arguably my favorite character in the show although there are soooo many good characters to choose from.

@Vero Mejía I would say that it's probably a bit of both. Atsumu likes to be able to be in control, but at the same time he is completely selfless to whoever he allows to spike. He gives his all in his toss and makes sure to give his spiker the best possible set. "There is no setter more devoted to his spikers than Miya Atsumu" "All the spikes that the attackers do thanks to my passes, are points scored by me" These two canon lines may seem contradictory but when you think about it, it really is not. Atsumu knows that unless he gives his best, his very all, in each of his tosses to his spikers, he would have 'failed' to become his vision of a setter. That's why he's adamant on giving the best possible sets for his spikers and why it pisses him off when someone can't hit it. He knows that in order to bring out the best of his spikers, he has to bring out his best as well. Because of this, Atsumu is extremely aware that he too has credit for when his spikers score points. Without his set, that spiker wouldn't have scored as well. Atsumu seems to see the setter and the spiker to be "one" in a sense. Both need each other. Without the setter, a spiker can't score. Without a spiker, a setter can't score either. A good, albeit cheesy metaphor for Atsumu would probably be relationships. I mean, we choose who we end up dating. It is a person's choice who to give their love and support to. And when they finally choose someone, that person would then perhaps shower them with all the support they can give. It's something like that I think. To Atsumu, setting is like being selfless and being selfish at the same time. He chooses who to set to. He chooses which setter would dance to his tune. But when he does, he gives that spiker his all. Only his very best. And honestly I loved how Furudate wrote him like this.

When you started discussing about Osamu “leaving” Atsumu, I started holding my tears. I just finished my last college swim season and I’m graduating in 2 months. I’m closing my book on competitive swimming after 16+ years competing in it and its harder than I thought it’d be. Not just for leaving the sport but detaching myself from the people that Ive met from it. I really wanna know how Osamu felt when he made the choice. I adore and envy people like Atsumu, but I am not regretting anything. Like Ukai said, “Volleyball (life) is a sport where you’re always looking up”. Another awesome job Aleczander!

one of the things that also made me like him more aside from the complexity that has been touched upon in this video, is just atsumu's sheer love of setting. i think atsumu fell in love with setting itself first, and it's something that contributes greatly into how he became the top high school setter. from what was shown in the flashback, he realized how "cool" setters are after watching a setter "helped" the other kid spike by placing the ball exactly at the kid's contact point. let's also note that the scene before that was him telling osamu how he hit the ball perfectly. from those things that he saw and experienced, atsumu realized and grasped at a young age what and how a setter should be like. it's why later on, his sets are described as easy to hit, and as the coach in all-japan camp said, makes the spiker feel like they've gotten better. (ties into the flashback where atsumu felt like he hit the ball perfectly, which is the reason why i think it's a factor in atsumu's realization). atsumu is the #1 high school setter for being, as kenma put it, "the ideal setter". it's what i personally think differentiates him from other great setters in the series like kageyama or oikawa, whose flaws naturally hinder them into reaching their full potential in some way. i mean, even kageyama only reached the point of pushing his spikers to their full potential in season 4, after hinata "crowned" him again. it's something atsumu already does however, because the day he realized he wanted to become a setter, he latched onto what a setter is ideally like and strived to become like that. in contrast of flaws being a hindrance to someone's full potential, his flaw of being egoistic and uncaring of what others think of him is a contribution to his fixation of being a setter who gives perfect sets no matter what, something i believe he also values above losing. his expression and tone while saying the line "because i'm a setter" already speaks for itself and is the main reason why i started liking his character, tbh. that much love and pride for what you do is moving and so respectable. edit: bruh i didn't realize it was so long 😂 you know you love a character when you write a wholeass essay about them 😔

As for as a character, I always find it difficult to explain why I like him. Like, I like him a lot! He’s probably my favorite manga-only character. He’s definitely a bit of a brat and a jerk, but he’s also just as passionate about volleyball as Hinata, Ushijima, Oikawa, and Kageyama. He’s got insane skill and, although he can definitely use kinder wording, he’s kinda right when he says people who can’t hit his tosses are scrubs. I especially like how, at least from memory lol, he never really says he’s better than his opponents (at least Kageyama in this case). Yeah, he called him a goody two shoes, but he never pulled an Oikawa and said something like “I’m definitely better than him”. He’s labeled as the No. 1 setter, yet not once do we see him brag about it. He loves a good challenge too. When Kageyama dumps the ball to reach match point, Atsumu isn’t pissed. He’s smiling. That detail is just something I love. Plus, the match starts with him kinda looking down on Hinata, but by the end, he acknowledges Hinata and even says he’ll toss to him one day. That’s so cool!! He’s a good guy who’s passionate about volleyball. I can get why some people dislike him, but he’s extremely endearing to me. He had limited screentime, which makes it even harder for me to explain why I like him, but oh well. I hope to see him again soon! Also, I’m glad Furudate kinda changed his personality from the national youth camp to the nationals match. I like his depiction in the Inarizaki match much more.:)

Something I admire about Atsumu’s hunger is that despite being praised and acknowledged as the number server in Division 1 V-League and arguably Japan, he still seeks to separate himself above the rest as a true elite by learning to mix up his serve to become a tri-wielder. Despite being among the best, he seeks to be BETTER than the best. He was frustrated and even brought his distress to his brother when they got older and just goes to show that his best drive to compete is his own competitive flame and push from his brother. This hunger to be the best server is still in him despite his competition being the best it’s ever been.

The main role of anime is generally to increase the sales of the manga, from where much of money is made by the producers. Now that there is no more manga to promote, I hardly think that the producers would be willing to put much resources into another few seasons of anime. If they do, there is a high chance that we'd get a half assed adaptation like TPN season 2.

Atsumu is incredibly fun to watch. When I was reading the manga I was a bit conflicted, because everything seemed so intense, and I kinda ignored the things that made me love him later on. I also appreciate very much that Furudate sensei made his setters kinda similar but so different. Cannot wait for the rest of the story to be animated. i loved this video a lot so thank you ! i personally absolutely adore the way atsumus character relates to hinata, how his “one day i’m gonna set for you” is just an accumulation of hinatas growth as a ball boy. the way that at the beginning of s4 the gap between hinata and kageyama (and by extension atsumu) seems so large, the fact that kageyama and atsumu get to play amongst elites and hinata is picking up balls for people who wish they were elites, plus the fact that hinata has always had to beg people to set for him (kageyama, his friends in middle school) so getting to see how at first hinata couldn’t play with high skilled players and had to beg to be set for, and then ending with a highly skilled player asking to set for him is so satisfying! i also like to think hinata was the reason why atsumu started to focus on the journey and have fun with the game, like when kita said people like atsumu want the results more than the journey seeing atsumu get lost in the match and not be so obsessed with winning and instead having genuine fun. there are times when hinata does something cool and atsumu is like “woah that’s so fricking awesome!” and osamu confusedly tells him “you would usually be sulking right now” to me that shows he’s focusing on the journey of the match and not as much the end result (i.e. winning) . he feels excitement playing hinata and when he sees him do something amazing he’s like “wow i want to do that too” . like i just absolutely adore the way atsumu and hinata are apart of each others journey. especially considering how they both come from “pairs” (karasuno duo, the miya twins) and that they were both the “weaker” of the pairs (hinata being told he has no value without kageyama, osamu being asked to be setter first) they way that they both had to break away from these pairs and learn to fight on their own is so interesting to me, especially given the different attitudes as hinata actively fights to be seen as his own entity whereas atsumu fights against it. the way that atsumu and hinata really didn’t click with another player like their previous pairs (e.g how in brazil volleyball partners are not permanent and more temporary) until they ultimately found each other is so cool to me! sorry for rambling in your comments i just really like hinata and atsmus jounery

I'll have to disagree because Oikawa is canonically listed as one of Kageyama's 2 greatest influences along with Hinata. After season 2, Kageyama was never scared of his opponents the same way he feared Oikawa. Atsumu and Kageyama are too similar in their style wherein they will only toss to spikers they believe deserve their setup, while we can note how Oikawa adjusts himself and makes use of anyone (even if not as skilled). Although, I do agree that the entire "goody two shoes" arc was a turning point for Kageyama's growth so I'll hand it to Atsumu for awakening that hehe.

This made me appreciate Atsumu a lot more! So thank you very much! The reason why I liked Atsumu at first was his beautiful way of setting and how it was highlighted in the series. Then on second watch, I understood his philosophy of setting and was at awe of him. Now that I add this insatiable hunger and how his work ethics match with Kita-san's so well, it makes him very much more likeable. I think his confidence is an attractive aspect of him, the fact that he never doubted that his efforts would reap him rewards. It is a foil to all the other characters that we have seen, since they all seem to have their moments of doubt.

In one of the official guidebooks, the author explained that Atsumu's name was picked because the word means "to assist". Osamu's name was also picked because that word can mean "to assist" too. I just think it's so awesome since they are twins, their names have the same meaning, and that they will forever support each other, and foreshadow their career choices in the future. So many people called Atsumu an "Oikawa 2.0" when he first appeared, but it turns out that Atsumu is more similar to Bokuto and Hinata than Oikawa.

One thing i just noticed. When Osamu threw the volleyball at the back of his head and Atsumu started chasing him. He did that because, Osamu knew how hard it is for some to be hated by others, and didnt want Atsumu to spend breaks at the volleyball camp alone. Kageyama is actually even more aggressive than Atsumu. Remember his King of the Court (bad version) days ? He was saying to his teammates in Kitagawa Daichi "Match my tosses if you want to win" while screaming at this teammates in the meantime Atsumu around the same period of time i suppose asked his spikers if they had any problem with his sets and THEN coldly confronted them with "then why couldn't you score any points ?". He is extremely considerate of his spiker's needs like Oikawa but pushes his teammates to do better at the same time. Something that kageyama only later in the series learns how to do.

Osamu is also a very loving brother and character I mean without Osamu like what you said in your video Atsumu is very lonely. That was one of the reasons why they had another fight when Osamu said he didn't want to pursue volleyball, that may had a very hard hit on Atsumu and he himself knew that and it gave him anxiety, I mean I understand it, even just abit, but I know how it feels cause I also had experiences. This is why I love the Miya twins so much cause they are a mix of rivals and brotherly love for one another. This is why Miya twins is a #siblingsgoals that I very much love and support. I just love how challenging and demanding he is, like when he will focus on Noya when serving, just for fun and because he CAN. His play is so different from Oikawa in this way, and I think just that fact shows a little of their personnalities. Atsumu is moved by Hinata cause he gives his all, and he has fun, but expect his set to be on point, and that's exactly what Atsumu wants too. Great videos!
