We review the last 6 months of owning our Honda Acty Attack JDM mini truck and list a few of the mods + upgrades. This Kei truck has been great for daily chores, hauling firewood and running errands. It is also incredible off-road with low ratio gears and a locking differential.

Really getting the urge to try to get a Kei truck imported from Japan - the family had a 4WD Subaru Sumo 1.2L high top van from new in 1988 and it was great apart from being a bit scary in high cross-winds when unloaded. We went on to have two Hijet 6-seaters (2WD) which were ideal for the narrow roads and tiny parking spaces we have in the UK. These 'Microvans', as they were known here, were really popular but faded away, I guess due to concerns about safety in front-end collisions. Old ones are making big money now, with good examples few and far between - import prices looking Ok though. Cheers.

The reason why the Acty Attack is said to be the strongest is that it has an optimum weight distribution, a large ground clearance and super low gear. The lowest 38 horsepower engine among its rivals specializes in stickiness at low speeds and does not slip the tires. Even a big car with power is not comparable to Acty Attack. And unfortunately, the Acty that surpasses this second generation Acty Attack is no longer born.

@@MisterRichHarris Thanks again Rich, stoked to see your comments! I had just replied to your other comment about cab size but will just recap, I’m 5’8” & the Acty fits me really well. My brothers Suzuki Carry cab is a similar size but dash layout is very different. Both trucks have similar headroom which is very good but I have seen tall top versions available. Try a few trucks out if you can before you decide on one, it was helpful to get an idea of overall comfort because they all have interesting differences. If you are really tall consider a Daihatsu HiJet Jumbo, they have a bit more cab room to slide the seat back and your legs won’t feel as cramped. Some of the newer Subaru Sambar’s have slightly bigger cabs too. I really enjoy driving the Acty and wouldn’t hesitate to spend all day running around in it, 55/60 mph on the highway is fine and it’s just as nimble in town as it is in the woods! 👌

Great video...thinking of buying one of the mini-trucks, new or used haven't decided, the new one I was looking at with the dump bed which is something I'd really need for what my plans are with one does have a PTO which runs the hydraulic pump for the dump bed. 4WD with high/low range, and differential lock are a must, with or without AC doesn't really matter that much to me. Looking at the prices of UTV's and adding a cab, one of these mini trucks make far more sense, their hauling/towing capabilities are much better than a UTV, and cost is cheaper...a loaded UTV with a cab, heat/ac is almost $30k, a brand new mini truck with AC, 4WD high/low, and locking diff with dump bed with PTO pump is $24k.

Excellent video! The million dollar question is, how tall are you? And are you comfortable driving the ACTY for any length of time? Thanks
@OlympicOverland
@OlympicOverland Жыл бұрын
Hi Rich, I am 5’ 8” and the Acty fits me really well. I have driven it on my 60 mile round trip work commute a few times and it’s been perfectly fine. I use it a lot in the woods but it is my main runabout for weekend trips to town which is a 10 mile highway stretch from my place. 55/60 mph is great and the truck will go faster but I typically keep it in that range on the highway. I have spent all day exploring dirt roads and running around out here on the coast in the Acty and it’s far nicer to be in than I expected, I actually really prefer driving it. Friends of mine in the 6’ tall range have all fit in the cab with decent headroom but I could see going for a Daihatsu Hijet Jumbo for some extra leg room if the Acty cab feels cramped to you. Cheers and thanks for watching!

We just got a '22 hijet and a '23 jimny to use on our ranches in tx and our ranch in az, but are registered to our larger ranch in mxo, only way we could get the newer vehicles! Same with my wifes hilux and s70 landcruiser, which are a 20 and 22 year models. Thanks for watching Bill. The tires are 13” Forceum MT08’s and the lift kit is a 2” eBay kit from a seller that makes them in the U.S., quality is nice and it comes with all of the hardware. Do you think the lack of a locking rear diff is a big deal? It doesn't seem to hold you back much.
@OlympicOverland
@OlympicOverland Жыл бұрын
My Acty Attack has the locking rear differential but the standard SDX model does not. I use the diff lock often but with good driving techniques an open diff 4x4 can make it through some pretty difficult situations off-road. My brothers Suzuki Carry originally had a rear locker but it was replaced with an open diff before he bought it. He recently found a used rear locking diff and installed it so both trucks now have lockers. 👌

It just depends on how you will be using it. They get great traction in 4wd and will take you most places that you want to go without the locking rear diff but on off camber situations and extremely uneven ground the rear locker is really nice to have. Either way, locking rear differential or not they are really fun trucks and I would still consider a clean non locking model. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions 👍

@@OlympicOverland thank you so much. Do you know how much the duty and taxes are to bring them in the states?
@OlympicOverland
@OlympicOverland 2 жыл бұрын
@@seanzwiefka7056 I think it usually adds about $1000-$1500 extra for shipping and port costs from Japan. There is a small fee to have someone move it at the port for you or a form that you pay yearly for that allows you to retrieve it yourself. Depending on who you go through in Japan, paper work will arrive first and trucks take 1-3 months for shipping. It’s helpful if you live near a main port. Good luck, the trucks are really useful and definitely worth the wait!

Do you happens to have those wheels / tire specs? I'm seriously looking into buying one and know they need upgrading to be modern road worthy
@OlympicOverland
@OlympicOverland Жыл бұрын
Hi, I have the specs in the video but the tires are 13” Forceum MT’s and the rims are 13” early 90’s Honda Civic steelies. With this combo the offset is correct and you won’t need a wheel spacer but I would suggest a 1.5” or 2” lift. If you are doing less off-road driving there are actually some decent 12” tires that will fit the stock rims but going up to a 13” rim will give you a better tire selection. This setup will work for a Honda Acty but lug patterns on the other makes will be different. The Suzuki Carry lug pattern matches a Geo Metro or Suzuki Swift. 👍
@OlympicOverland
@OlympicOverland Жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention that ebay seems to be a good place to find the Forceum MT’s. If you stick with a 12” wheel I would recommend the Yokohama Super Digger or Toyo Open Country tires, I’ve seen both of these on eBay as well.

Hi! Only the Honda Acty Attack model has the rear diff lock. The Attack has a lower ratio 4 speed transmission with 2 extra gears, an ultra low range first and reverse gear. Some of the Suzuki’s had diff locks too, my brothers Carry had one originally but it was removed so he had to find another diff lock rear axle from a Kei truck parts supplier and swap it back into his truck. If you go that route and look for a rear axle with diff lock for your Suzuki just make sure the gear ratio is the same as your front differential. Cheers! 👌
