As a Brit my self I think the start is bloody fantastic - then it’s a thanks to the NHS which is great! but I don’t know I guess a flex to other countries 🤷😅 - then it’s 20 minutes of twats dancing to bops through the generations - another flex about the World Wide Web which is a totally different thing to the internet 🛜 - then some actual artsy dance stuff but in a massive arena it’s kinda like meh? - twats on bikes representing the doves 🕊️ you can’t use real doves anyone because in the 1988 Olympics the torch burned real doves (actually kinda funny) I would be embarrassed to be a bike dove - The Olympic torch looking back is a banging idea 💡 all the petals from all the countries coming to make the torch ahhh that’s bloody lovely 🥰 - Well how do we end a show? can’t go wrong with the beetles I guess so 🤷♀️ get him to play hey Jude. Don’t know what that has the do with the Olympics but again another FLEX!!! Whyyyyyy!!! As an Olympic nerd it’s definitely top 5 of all time just for the start when they forge the rings is amazing but then they drop the ball and just start flexing STOP that’s all cringe 😂

English teacher from America here. This is what I constantly try to tell my kids, all the time, when they ask why we study British literature in America. Because the Brits INVENTED English. They developed it from a mere language to one of the most beautiful and universal modes of expression through the development of an incredible culture. America is full of Dutch, Irish, German, Spanish, African, Japanese, and Middle Eastern Immigrants. But we all speak English, and the Brits are the masters of it.

Like the Beatles, Queen or Elton John....they all came to America and made big HERE.

The last time my mother and her dear sister were together was in the latter's retirement condo in Miami. We watched in rapt silence as this splendid event of yours unfurled. Afterward, we all had tea and mom told us stories of the two years she and dad spent in London after the war. We stayed up late and finally turned in contented from an evening of storytelling, laughter and remembrance, the perfect end to our visit,. And it all began with this ceremony. The next morning, we flew back to Virginia. I've always wanted to thank someone for this. So, if you'll permit me, I'd like to thank you. Nicely done! May your life be filled with moments like these.

I am not British, but came here for a palate cleanser after the disaster that was the Paris opening. Haven’t seen this in 12 years, but what a joy to be reminded of what a classy and innovative ceremony looked like, a culture that still pays respect to its heritage and roots, and yet also tastefully showcasing diversity as a strength in the modern era. The industrial revolution piece was amazing. I felt emotional watching it as through the storytelling I can sense the bittersweetness of the country’s technological progress- the green hills being replaced by the industrial revolution, the visionaries of the future represented by Brunel, and the sooty, grimy faces representing the hardship and struggles of the average citizens who built the country. The forging of the Olympics rings in the fires of industry and them coming together was a masterpiece. The universal values that build a country which are also very apt for the Olympics were on display- determination & perseverance through hardship, innovation, unity… nothing of this was found in the Paris opening. I was looking forward to the Paris opening, but I was very disappointed. Having to rely on shock value to distract from the disjointed mess and mediocre planning shows how talentless the director is, truly shocking as France is reputed to be a country of class and the arts. He made it all about himself rather than thinking about how the universal values of the Olympic spirit could be embodied in the ceremony.

England and London especially has been through so much. When I read English authors one thing that struck me was the recurring theme of war and loss. As a US American, I have no experience of that (9/11 being over 1000 miles away). As an English woman, born in 1954, it was the pastoral scenes before the "Industrial" takeover that make me the most emotional. I remember as a small child the gorgeous countryside and the fields of wildflowers. Picking apples and maypole dancing were scenes of great happiness added to the sound of cricket played on the green. My Father once told me on the train to London that we were going through the "Black Country" and I shivered at the thought. This Opening Ceremony struck a huge chord of reminiscence in my generation's Heart.

The UK is a cultural powerhouse. I loved the industrialisation scene which was obviously important British history which affected the entire world but what puts this ceremony on top is the song medley focussed on the young couple around a modest suburban house. A completely relatable human experience (not boasting about empire or anything) but backed by the most insane flex of soft power - some of the most popular music in Modern history, all British, put together so artistically. I am Irish so it slightly pains me to give that compliment. France had no equivalent in tonight's ceremony. In fact, the dance music medley was almost embarrassing.

Oh look a real iconic olympics opening ceremony

There was a clear topic being shown here: industrialisation. Everything was about cultural and anything we’re proud of our country. Even HMTQ herself was included in the show. It’s about being grande, with grace and dignity. No one was being sexualised/objectified/harassed here. This is incredibly iconic. Pure art.

The industrial revolution section is still one of the most epic performances ever. The movement, the music, the special effects. It looks amazing.

And it's true history. Little England dragged the whole wide world into the modern age, kicking and screaming in some cases.

Mark Sutton, the stunt double for Daniel Craig who performed the skydive died in a wingsuit gliding accident in 2013. At least he will always be remembered through this great opening ceremony

This brings tears to my eyes 10 years on. Caliban, Brunell, the NHS, Dizzy Rascal, Olympics in East London and Danny Boyle in charge of that. Choreography, costumes, lighting, sound, everything on point. The Queen not telling her family she was involved. That's class. I was so proud then and still am of that moment (thank you Radio 4 for The Reunion) but...I won't spoil it.

The Queen was a very cool lady. I also loved the Paddington Bear piece she did to open her jubilee concert. She was unwell, but like always, delivered.
