@@crabb9966 mentally I think it really is, during the race at least. you need to adapt each time to the race that's going on. sure sometimes they might know how different athletes like to pace their runs but strategies might change. Always having that need to check your own pace and know when to start sprinting must be harder than just "blindly" running as fast as you can each time.

I ran this in the 38's way back in college, and I was good enough to win local age group categories. We had a Kenyan on our team and I got to watch him break 30 at a conference meet. The performance gap between him and me was gigantic. But the gap between him and someone like Farah or Bikele who could run 27:30 on demand may be even larger. You gain such an appreciation for the talent of elite distance runners watching this, especially those like Farah who had such a long period of dominance and is breaking WR in 2020!

My friend is 13 years old and he ran 10kms in 41 minutes, he's actually not a runner but one of the best in Sweden at his age on Orienteering (If that's the correct word) Also, he is very short for his age!
