Highlights as Italy win the Men's Fencing Team Foil Gold against Japan during the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The women's fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris. Today, men and women compete in individual and team events, in which three types of weapon are used: foil, epee and sabre. The foil was, at first, the only weapon used by women, until the 1996 Games in Atlanta, when women's epee was introduced. Women's sabre appeared for the first time on the Olympic programme in Athens in 2004.

The Foil of Fencing is essentially the modern version of the French Court sword, which became the fashionable duelling sword of choice in that era. Foil teaches priority, in that it teaches you to respect your opponents attack - ie to parry and riposte. Epee, while termed the duelling sword removes priority, but if you did your Foil training you have learned to respect an opponents blade and will avoid being hit. Foil and Epee were safe training stages in training for sharps.

Its actually that Chida disengages around the blade so he had right of way. After touch came the parry and touch by Cassara so the call was good seeming how it is difficult to tell on whether or not that Chida after the disengage was doing a reprise or not. Since in reality it may look like a straight disengage attaque, but since it almost looks as if he did a reprise, there is difficulty.

No in this case it does matter - it looks like Baldini's first riposte over the back fails, which means priority goes back to chida, who scores. It should have been Chida's hit, since Baldini's first riposte failed to land, and he didn't take a second parry.

Refer to the technical rules t.10. The PIL position ... fencer’s sword arm is kept straight and the point of his weapon continually threatens his opponent’s valid target... t.56. 3b) If the attack is initiated when the opponent is ‘point in line’ (cf. t.10), the attacker must, first, deflect the opponent’s blade... Also Casara did not start a compound attack. No feint. t.56. b)The compound attack (cf. t.8.1) is ... when the arm is straightened in the presentation of the first feint...

Fencing is not, and never has been "sword-fighting". Flexible blades have their drawbacks, they offer less control to the fencer, but it is easier to flick, or do a coupé. A stiffer blade has drawbacks as well, it can be more difficult to flick etc..., but it is also offers more control with your disengaging.

Oh... and this one too. t. 56. 2d) Actions, simple or compound, steps or feints which are executed with a bent arm, are not considered as attacks but as preparations, laying themselves open to the initiation of the offensive or defensive/offensive action of the opponent (cf. t.8.1/3). Casara tends not to lunge and keeps his blade close to himself. It is in the grey area of attack or preparation debate but it is good that referees are calling these hits whereas a decade ago it's never valid.

"Fencing is not, and never has been sword-fighting." Oh really? You're forgetting that foil was originally developed as a training weapon for the smallsword. "Flexible blades have their drawbacks, they offer less control to the fencer, but it is easier to flick, or do a coupé." Super whippy blades offer no point control. Also, I actually find it quite easy to do a coupe with a stiff blade, provided you do it correctly. Flicking is utterly ridiculous, you couldn't flick with an actual sword.

If you put sharps in the hands of Fencers, it is 'sword fighting'. Fencing developed from schools dedicated to very real sword play so to say that it is not 'sword fighting' is really splitting hairs to an obtuse degree. It is what it is, though the rules of the Sport have given birth to a variation much like Olympic Judo removes certain lethalities ... it is no less a fighting art.

I think it'd be better for the sport if the blades were mandated to be less flexible. It's becoming less sword fighting and more trying to make the pretty light go off. As for the pistol grips, they'd be less effective if the blades were stiffer and the flick less possible.

Actually even with real blades (think longswords) they also have a fair degree of flex when captured with high speed cameras. The issue with sport fencing becoming less "sword fighting" like has to do with the elements of sports i.e. if you fall down on the piste, they will call a halt whereas in a duel, you'll become instant shish kebab on the ground reducing the need for a proper balanced form in favour of a more athletic and aggressive/responsive stance.

Unfortunately it was Baldini's fault imo for calling/testing it on the front of his bicep whereas it was closer to his tricep. It would have made more sense too considering the proximity to the armpit as one of spots with high concentration of sweat glands in the human body. I agree that at 0:22:51 that was horrendously bad. I've no idea how he manages to interpret it that way.

I agree with you. . . The only problem is, given the way most people "fence" these days, the blades would most likely break due to people literally running into them. And yeah, most "fencing" has degenerated into a game of poke the other guy with a car antenna to turn the light on.

Doesn't matter which came up first provided the lights both came up.

Loads of fencers do it. Personally I find it really annoying and never remove my mask until the end of a fight (unless I need to talk to the ref)
