virtue/moir is a team that comes once in a generation - the last was torvill/dean. they've radiated excellence since they were juniors in 2003, and rose through the ranks into their senior-level skating whilst remaining as one of the top since 2007. their versatility, longevity, top-notch technicalities paired with their natural abilities to interpret and make use of their music on the ice, as well as truly going out there and *dancing* makes them the greatest ice dance couple of our generation. of course, how can we forget the way we felt when we watched them skate? definitely my favorite ice dancers of all time.

I love this Olympic competition. It was like all season the judges were trying to make certain results happen, but the right teams got the right medals in the right order (though I'd argue the Shibs could have arguably at least placed second in the SD and should have scored higher in the FD). V/M deserved the gold hands-down and this judging system did not truly differentiate or appropriately reward the sheer difficulty and complexity of their dance. The Shibs had my favorite performance of the night emotionally. All three American teams were dealing with a lot of tension between them and with the stress for two-seasons-and-a-half going into Pyeongchang as, unlike the other countries, all three were VERY close in scores for that long and had to deal with the pressure of bringing their A-game at EVERY competition for more than two seasons, or risk losing their no. 1 spot for the country, which matters a lot in Ice Dance. It's a lot of stress to deal with and I think that it showed in all three teams in different ways. The Shibs seemed utterly relieved as if the pressure was lifted out of them after their skate (you can tell how it was getting to them at the GPF and Nationals after being undefeated among the American teams since 2016 Nationals), Hubbell/Donohue were so focused on beating the Shibs that they fell under the pressure with small mistakes, and I think Chock/Bates weren't quite themselves all season - afraid of making errors to lose more ground - and skating super carefully and they finally let loose after that sad fall.

I kinda feel like so many teams don’t get the attention they should here... It was impossible for Weaver/Poje not to touch our feelings and Gilles/Poirier were on fire. We also had absolutely wonderful, even despite the fall, Chock/Bates who brought magic on the ice and then there’s the Shibutanis who are a delight for the eye, the surprisingly good Hubbell/Donohue (usually they don’t really interest me, but here it was actually a very catchy program for them) and Cappellini/Lannotte who were really graceful. Of course, nothing could top the two you-know-who performances, but come on, there are many other things aside P/C and V/M to watch 😄 and that’s why it’s my favorite discipline in these Olympics. There’s almost zero boring performances 😍
@zilam984 жыл бұрын
teams will get more recognition once they excel in both artistry and technical execution, the way v/m has. some teams may be "graceful", others may be "on fire", and still others may have catchy programs, but a lot of them don't meet technical execution excellence that v/m has always brought to their programs
@ingetamm79514 жыл бұрын
zilam98 I didn’t argue on that 😄 but I meant that unlike singles where there is a huge difference between watching someone with many triples/quads and only doubles, in ice dance a program can still be interesting to watch despite not being strong technically and many teams had a good performance worthy of mention here even despite not being on the level of V/M.

long-term ice dance fans (those who've watched ice dance way before p/c debuted on the senior scene) have all seen how v/m has evolved throughout their career. one of the things that has piqued my interest in their evolution, from detroit to montreal, has been their arm movements. during their time with marina, tessa's hand expressions had some peculiar positions that i find not flowing with their programs. tessa is THE best female ice dancer of her generation and for many years to come, but just that during her time with marina, i just couldn't get my head around some of her hand positions. their overall arm expressions were pretty much repetitive during their time with marina as well particularly during their free dances. their short dances, especially their sochi SD, certainly featured more expressive and varied arm movements. when they moved to montreal, they still had their carriage and grace, but they had more freedom with their upper body movements/positions as well, especially in free dances. this was most evident in their 2018 fd. i'm so amazed at how tessa tempered the intensity of her arm movements/positions to express her character's declining vitality toward eventual death. still very graceful, but much, much softer and showing "weakening" of the intensity of the movements. just soooo much talent in how they DYNAMICALLY express themselves in their programs
@judychubarnes48854 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too, but only after I watched Marie France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon skate. Once they become vm's coaches their arms motion/style evolved. Marina had a much more classical style.

Absolutely. Marina obviously coached them well from a technical standpoint (they won 3 Olympic medals under her coaching), but they blossomed as *artists* under M-F&P. Their choreography was also more natural for those last 2-3 years. Papadakis cizeron dance beautifully.. but dont know why, their dance just not give me any goosebump like virtuemoir 🤔🤔🤔 truly curious...
@andyhaochizhang4 жыл бұрын
Can be personal preferences. For me 3 things made their performance more emotionally powerful: 1) their music has more dynamics, 2) their choreography are closer to normal dancing (I think they can really re-choreograph this and perform it as a dance), 3) their chemistry
@eidokun4 жыл бұрын
Yep, the French although technically perfect with every execution. They gave less chemistry compared to V/M pair, mainly because V/M have been partners for 2 decades, just like in sports dance, chemistry comes from the synchronizing capability of partners, with both emotion, technique, timing, awareness and coordination with each other.

For me it is quite the opposite: I cant even watch virtue/moir, while get goosebumps and electric sensations through the body watching papadakis/cizeron (as well as gilles/porier).
@1994530634 жыл бұрын
For me, P/C had a better program, but V/M were a better team. But they are both very different, very exquisite.
@Ian.D.4 жыл бұрын
For me it was the opposite. V&M danced beautifully and they gave it all but after all, it was a Moulin Rouge program. P&C gave me goosebumps (especially in their stationary lift where the music changes and we enter the 3rd movement of the Moonlight Sonata). It's no wonder they'd been winning the FD portion of all competitions throughout the season.

One year later (since I last commented) and I’m still wondering who the commentators are to no avail, loving V/M and the Shib Sibs, and very appreciative of the couple who had the Pride and Prejudice routine. Such a difference between the 2018 ice dance event and the most recent in Beijing.

I have to say this group of skaters on recent years is incredible. They all skate very well. The level of talent surpasses any others in the past except for Gordeeva & Grinkov. Tessa and Scott are incredibly athletic, entertaining and dynamic. Papadakis & Cizeron are extremely technical, artistic and avant-garde. I appreciate both styles. The top ten are simply amazing.

The injustice that the judges in Sochi committed in relation to Virtue / Moir was finally left behind. The best couple in ice dancing. And emotions are something incredible.
@anastasiaanastasia91824 жыл бұрын
Why do you think there was injustice in sochi? Were VM underscored? interested as I didn't watch that competition, just know that an American team won
@johnnyd4ev4 жыл бұрын
Meryl Davis and Charlie White won Gold in Sochi. And beat V and M consistently except 2012 Worlds, even in Canada. Get over it V and M fans, if D and W were here in 2018 the story would be different.
@lookatthat24384 жыл бұрын
@@anastasiaanastasia9182 you could watch it and make your own judgement, imo they won fair and square, their program was more cohesive and overall better than VM, it was a tight competition (those were the days) both broke records but DW was slightly better The thing is Tessa was injured and they were off ice for a while, meanwhile DW kept competing and creating a record, they improve so much between 2010 and 2014, it made sense DW won to everyone who payed attention except ofc pressed VM fans

Gilles/Poirier were so good! Such a good concept and program. I wish they were more recognized.
@zilam984 жыл бұрын
they will be more recognized in one of two ways: either they improve on their technical skills, or that there's no one else in the competition that can successfully meld high technical skills with fluidity of choreography. pakhamo/kokko had such quirky concepts/choreography but didn't have the technical skills of the teams who placed higher than them

Listen to the crowd after Papadakis/Cizeron and then listen to the crowd after Virtue/Moir and you know who deserved to win. Would've been tragic if they didn't after such a legendary performance. 🥰😍☺
@hellogoditsmesara35692 жыл бұрын
I think in terms of technicality the young French team, Gabriella and Guillaume will outshine Scott and Tessa (France already beat the WR in Beijing '22) but Scott and Tessa have an unparalleled chemistry and charisma that will make them remembered through history. Absolutely breathtaking finale and what a way to retire
@rosanishina50972 жыл бұрын
La trajectoire des Français est remarquable. La trajectoire des Canadiens est légendaire. Les techniciens et les records du monde se succèdent mais des Virtue et Moir ça n'existe qu'une fois.
@georem2 жыл бұрын
For me, Gabriella and Guillaume are just like doing art, just creating beauty and perfection. Scott and Tessa got just an incredible charisma, but I prefer de artistry I find with GG.
@rosanishina50972 жыл бұрын
The scoring of figures and steps is partly subjective when it comes to assigning a level of success and quality. In addition, the groups of judges vary at each competition and because of the draw are not strictly the same between the short program and the long program. With all these parameters the scores are very far from being an exact science.

Ya, I loved their dance best too. Although I am a novice, so may be I am not the best judge of the skating technicalities. But I understand dance, and the Shibus reminded me a bit of Davis & White in their sense of the music, and especially coz they seemed to really enjoy dancing

I really love the dance of the TURKISH couple. An extremely lovely Cleopatra and I guess, her suitable beau. One I have noticed throughout the dancing competition here is that the judges give scores and then LOWER them. I guess they have the WINNER in mind.
