What was the Final Gold Medal count for Canada, the nation hosting the '76 Games? Why did the Queen give the opening statement and NOT Pierre Trudeau, the PM of Canada, the ruler of the hosting Nation? Curious
@helpinghal7 жыл бұрын
tommyboat64 Canada did not win any gold medals but won 5 silver and 6 bronze medals. However, they are in line to be awarded at least one gold retroactively if the IOC ever decides to disqualify the East Germans, who have admitted they were doping... Queen Elizabeth II opened the games as the Head of State of Canada. Trudeau was the head of the government. It is traditional for the Head of State of the host country to open the games, unless he or she designates someone else. The Winter Olympics in Calgary 1988 and Vancouver 2010, for example, were opened by the Governor- General of Canada, a Canadian citizen who serves as the Queen's representative for day-to-day affairs. One unique example: in 1932, FDR opened the Lake Placid Winter Olympics in his capacity as Governor of New York because then-President Herbert Hoover was too busy dealing with the Great Depression. Roosevelt then defeated Hoover for the Presidency later that year.

The Montreal Olympic Stadium is a very beautiful structure. It's a big shame that due to the mismanagement left it unfinished before the games began, as well as the entire debt the games left for Montreal to pay up. I'd still prefer if they removed the roof and left it wide open like it originally was.

@PK I'd have say this was my favourite Summer Games, (so many stars were born) and the Winter Games at Lake Placid 1980 being the other. Although, I don't like watching or participating in any form of distance running, I think fans of those disciplines would tell us that these Games weren't their favourite without the Africans. That would be my criticism of LA '84 without most of the Eastern Bloc participation. The Olympics will never be as great as they were back in those days. Up till 1994 Lillehammer, I used to plan all my vacations, work schedules and Summer outings around The Games, as not to interfere with watching my favourite events and stars.

It was mainly mismanagement coupled with a construction workers strikes that delayed completion. Corruption in the construction industry (particularly concrete contracting) didn't help. In short, the whole thing was bungled right from the start. A significant portion of the blame goes to the "conseil des métiers de la construction" union because they deliberately slowed construction down as a collective bargaining tactic (work-to-rule.) This culminated in an full-blow strike that delayed construction even further. In the long run the union screwed itself by creating an atmosphere in which construction contractors would prefer to not deal with the union in favour of non-union workers.

How "wonderful" to see the CBC was burning through taxpayer's money back then just as outrageously as today. As for the stadium, like most government funded projects in Quebec the graft and corruption was legendary. From watered down concrete with inadequate rebar to slapped together athlete housing, this was a great fleecing of Quebec taxpayers which literally took decades to repay.
