Historical! First Swimming Mixed-Gender Race at the Olympics | Tokyo 2020 Replays

In the swimming mixed 4x100m medley event teams can choose the order in which their swimmers compete, meaning during some legs women face off directly against men.
The event is one the highlights of the most gender-balanced Games in history, joining triathlon, judo, athletics, shooting, archery and table tennis in having a new mixed-gender Olympic event.
Great Britain swam to victory - and a new world record - in the debut Olympic mixed 4x100m medley relay final. China and Australia took silver and bronze respectively.

To be very honest, I find mixed gender races in the Olympics to be more interesting and exciting than just the usual races because there are many combinations and tactics that can be employed. They are also unpredictable..... Hope such races continue in future Olympics and World Championship.

These were great. It's most fun when different teams use different male-female orders. Let's hope they don't all settle on F-M-M-F, but we'll see. In athletics, the universal M-F-F-M order has taken away some of the fun. Luckily, in swimming, it'll depend on the relative strengths of the team members in different strokes, so we might expect to maintain some variety.

1. China tend to use MMFF 2. Italy also tend to use MMFF 3. Russia also use MMFF USA should use FMMF to maximize advantage from Caeleb Dressel in butterfly, instead of using him as the anchor in freestyle. They should trust in Michael Andrew in breaststroke as proven later in men 4x100m medley relay final where Andrew did his job quite well.

The biggest margin that comes from using male or female is in breaststroke. That's why most teams will use a male breaststroker whenever possible. USA coaches made mistakes in this relay. But probably they didn't trust Michael Andrew or Andrew Wilson. Fortunately, they finally trust Michael later in men 4x100m medley relay final.

yeah it's just simple math, you absolutely have to have a guy doing breastroke at least and to not put Dressel on fly when he holds the world record by quite a bit? HUGE mistake by USA coaches. I think they just hate Dressel for some reason, they left him off the 800 free relay too for some unknown reason. Definitely should be fired and not be coaching the next Olympics.

There was a reason China, Australia, the Netherlands, the Russian Olympic Committee and Israel chose men in the breaststroke leg to match up against Britain’s Peaty, arguably the most unbeatable swimmer in the world across 100 meters of his stroke. Only the U.S. went with a female, the 17-year-old Jacoby. Peaty out-split her by more than eight seconds.

Great performance by Anna Hopkin on last leg. Imagine knowing that you could lose it after the team gained a lead for you. She was being chased by Australian world womens'champion and Dresel yet she went like a bullet and never looked like being caught. She was a star!!

Didn't matter what Dressel did at the point, the math just doesn't add up, the USA coaches couldn't do simple math and put the wrong order up, it's as simple as that. Smith, Andrew, Dressel (fly), Weizel should have been the order, no brainer here.

This race is confusing for both viewers and swimmers in the pool. As this is a mix of male and female, it is difficult to judge by mere look on the gap, esp male vs female. It needs also a calculation of time splits on each legs from which swimmer can estimate how much gap he or she has to maintain, because the next swimmers may vary between male or female. In the case of GB vs China, it happens to be easy to analyse or predict, as the last swimmers are women. Now imagine if the same situation happened between GB vs USA, where James Guy chased and passed Torrie Huske like he did to Zhang Yufei of China. In the last leg, Dressel would have eaten Anna Hopkin. Back to GB vs China, people will tend to think that Adam Peaty didn't do anything because the gap in breaststroke leg was still big. What most viewers don't know is Peaty reduced the gap by 56.78 - 58.11 = -1.33 secs. In backstroke, GB were behind by 58.80 - 52.56 = 6.24 secs. Therefore, when James Guy entered the pool, the total gap was 6.24 - 1.33 = 4.91 secs. This gap is enough for GB to handle in the next two legs. Rough calculation between James vs Zhang Yufei will obtain about 5 secs for GB's advantage, so the remaining gap would see GB ahead of China by 5 - 4.91 = 0.09 secs. This little advantage is enough for Anna Hopkin to finish her job as the anchor. In fact the gap between James vs Zhang Yufei is 50.00 - 55.48 = -5.48. So the total gap at the exchange to the last leg is 5.48 - 4.91 = 0.57 secs. This margin is comfortable for Anna Hopkin to finish the race, because on paper, she was better than Chinese anchor. And she did with 52.00, while the Chinese had 52.71. Overall, GB were ahead by 0.57 + 0.71 = 1.28 secs. In conclusion, each GB swimmers did their job very well as expected.

Love these mixed type races. Remember seeing the Paralympic swimming mixed where they have differing disabilities & finding it so exciting where it’s so difficult to see who’ll eventually win. This mixed relay had some of that intrigue plus all the excitement of the teams changing positions during the race depending on the stroke and the advantages and disadvantages of different tactical setups in regards to which sexes do which stroke

The U.S. coaches appear to have ignored one simple mathematical reality in constructing the relay lineup: the fact the gap between elite men and elite women in the breaststroke is the largest of any of the four strokes - roughly 7½ seconds on average at this meet. The gap between individual men’s 100 breast gold medalist Adam Peaty of Britain (57.37) and women’s winner Jacoby (1:04.95) at these Olympics was 7.58 seconds. By comparison, the gap between men’s 100 free champion Dressel (47.02) and women’s counterpart Emma McKeon of Australia (51.96) was only 4.96 seconds. Caeleb Dressel dove in and attempted to chase down seven female swimmers whose head starts ranged from about eight seconds to about 2½. Too much to ask of him. He still managed to track down 3 of the women.

So that means that if a woman was 5 seconds ahead of a man and they were both swimming freestyle, he could catch up to her. But, in this case, when Dresel jumped into the pool, the first swimmer was 8 seconds ahead oh him. And even though she was a woman ("slower" than him), it was impossible for him to catch up to her.

Dressels actually swam the fastest in that last leg, but just couldn't catch up. It's either due to Jacoby's little glitch or Dressels had just swum in I think two events before, so not as fresh as the GB team. And it's quite surprising that USA used mffm combo, whereas usually they use mmff in previous world championships and quite successful with it.

I loved watching this. The different disciplines within the event take away the ability to simply go M-F-F-M which would be standard if they were all swimming the same stroke. I was surprised to see so many teams with a female swimming the anchoring freestyle leg. Interestingly, the US was the only team to put a man in the anchor position. Lots of variables to consider and it was fascinating to watch.

@@ayme5868 It is for a swimmer, it is 5ft 4 and lots of male swimmers are over 6ft tall as obviously it gives them an advantage straight away through being so tall and their arm spans are also bigger the taller they are, most women are over 5ft 8 who swim and Freya Anderson is 190cm which is 6ft 2 tall Katy Ledecky 183cm so 165cm is short when compared to other female swimmers.

no it not, just let me explain in simple terms, lets say a men takes 52 seconds in 100 breastroke and a women takes a 1m, thats 8 seconds of advantage, now lets compare free a men takes 49seconds and a women takes 55 lets say, thats a 6seconds difference, so now you see its not the same. if the men had swim the breast they would have 2 seconds of more advantage. and that is huge. @@bartholomewlyons

I feel for the goggles slip. Something similar happened to me at a championship where the goggles flipped into my eyes with the glass pressing into my sockets. But to be honest, something like that doesn't really impact performance. If you swim 10s of kilometers every week, lane after lane, you don't need goggles.

Actually this GB Team should Thank JAMES GUY who was swimming Butterfly, When he took over from Adam Peaty, he was behind 3 bodies on 50m, and swam so well on turn over running after Italy and China , body lenght now is the difference on last 50m!

Big advantage came from Adam Peaty as expected : 1.33 sec over Chinese's men breaststroker. It's a massive margin that China could not compensate. Yes, James Guy did good job with his split of 50.00 sec, because it's enough to take over. Anna Hopkin performed excellent as their anchor with 52.00 sec over Chinese anchor who had 52.71

@@hannahratier7428 Adam Peaty had 56.78 in breaststroke, while Lydia Jacobi of USA had 1.05.09. From this leg we obtain a gap of 8.31 sec. That's huge to compensate for. Dressel had 46.99 in free, while Anna Hopkin had 52.00. The gap in this leg is only 5.01. From this two legs, USA were still behind in 8.31 - 5.01 = 3.30 sec. Even if Dressel went crazy with 46.00 sec, it wouldn't have helped. Pure mistake by USA coaches in deciding their best lineup. However, it was still hard to beat GBR with their excellent performance here.

Putting a female breaststroker is a great disadvantage for the mixed-relay, poor decision by team USA staff, great tactics from team GB and fantastic swim

Correct. Womens world record in breaststroke is 7.25 seconds slower than mens world record, while womens world record in crawl is only 4.8 seconds slower. In this relay, it's the best strategic option for women to swim crawl and backstroke, or if you don't have a great backstroke girl, maybe butterfly, but certainly never breaststroke.
