When the first cruise ships arrived, they were so slow that officers on the QE2 would joke that their ship could go faster backwards than the new ships could go forward!

It's funny because it's true, all cruise ships are horrible, bulky and feel... cold? The only semi-cruise ships that have any flair are the new Cunard Vessels MS Queen Elizabeth and MS Queen Victoria (And their both modified heavily to act as ocean liners) and even they can't stack up to their sister RMS Queen Mary 2, the only active "True" ocean liner. QE2, in my opinion, is greatest Ocean Liner ever to sail, and she lasted the best part of 40 years before retiring.

Yes, to us 60+ old guys, she was our special ship, we’d all go down to the coast to see her sail into Melbourne and stand in awe when she departed. I have a cherished copy on the Scottish Daily Mail dated Sept 20 1967 , with the headlines “The Last Night Ashore” , with stories of her sighing and groaning as she settled on her keel in preparation for her launch the next day. So much more dramatic than they way they come out of the sausage factory these day. Thanks for the post.

A very well presented video of this great ship. As a young lad I saw her in Southampton and was very impressed even then. I was lucky enough to see her again in the Port of Tyne (Newcastle, UK) about 12 years ago, as part of her farewell tour. I remember watching her arrive, with my late father who sadly had Alzheiner's. He had been a Chief Engineer at sea (until I was born anyway) so had always liked ships and boats. The QE2 nearly couldn't get into the Tyne due to strong winds, but on the final attempt made it. There were hundreds watching on both sides of the Tyne. I had a scanner radio with me, so dad enjoyed hearing the conversation between the Captain and the Tyne Harbourmaster. With the Alzheimer's he kept asking who was talking. Regards from the UK

I worked for a while in John Brown's in the 70's after the QE2 and we were still using the machine tools that were made to bend and shape her. The tools and machinery dated from the late 1890's and were still functional but it was the skill of the craftsmen that made her the icon she is. Incidentally, the windows on the superstructure hadn't been cut out at the time of the launch and it was black plastic bags that were pasted on to make her more aesthetically pleasing.

My friend was with the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards when they sailed on the QE2 to war in the Falklands in 1982 along with the Welsh Guards and the Gurkhas then returned to Southampton on August 10, 1982.

Very mod decor in ‘69, love the apple green leather sofas in the foyer (the same color as the built in Formica parsons table in the kitchen of my aunt’s house built that year), the wall designs in the children’s playroom, and in one cabin I saw a white fiberglass chair with blue plaid upholstery (!) - the later redecorations lost the cohesiveness of the original interior. One thing I didn’t like is that in pictures of staterooms there did not appear to be bedspreads: made them look like hospital rooms.

Last of the great ocean liners, not like the apartment block shopping centre filled floating junk boxes of today. The bearded elderly Captain on the bridge of QE-II reminded me of Captain Edward Smith of Titanic fame, a bad omen. Sad seeing the departure for the Falklands, at least she returned unscathed. I remember as a boy building my Airfix model of QE-II. Let's hope she will be well looked after in Dubai. Thanks for the memories QE-II.

Jonathan Her QE2 was retired back in 2008. The Original QE was sadly destroyed in a fire back in the early or late 60s after Cunard sold the liner to a private group who turned the ship into a floating sea college. We have the new QE which came in service in 2010, but it's not designed like a true ocean liner. The last ship to grace the ocean liner design is QM2 Queen Mary 2. But if you want original then QE2 is the last true Ocean Liner ever built. Cunard has three ocean liner for the 21st century with QM2 Queen Mary 2 being the Flagship launch into service in 2003-2004, QV Queen Victoria in 2007 as QE2 was retired in 2008 after 40 years in service and QE Queen Elizabeth in 2010.

The funnel was not painted red. It was completely replaced. The red one is much wider.

The original funnel was repainted into traditional Cunard colors in the refit immediately after her service during the Falklands War. That funnel would be replaced by a more substantial one during the 1986/87 refit, which continued to use Cunard red/orange.

Something is actually going on now. The ship has been moved, workers are on her, some parts, like the radar mast, are cleaned up and painted, they look like new, new lights , the lifeboats and davits are removed and so on... It is sad that she went to Dubai to die. The executives of Cunardival should be shot for spitting on her history and that of Englands rich maritime history to those clowns to die. If they truly wanted to retire her, she should have been preserved on the isle for generations to enjoy and used as a U.K cultural attraction. Further proof that Cunardival isn't the old Cunard line and that big money can do anything regardless of effect.
