I shoot with a pair of E-M1X bodies and absolutely love this camera. It is simply the best camera I've ever owned in terms of comfort, ergonomics and performance. I have large hands so comfort and ergonomics are very important to me. I have no plans to replace either one of my E-M1X bodies and intend on shooting with them for many years to come. Even if an updated model (OM-X?) was introduced I'd still keep the two E-M1X bodies that I currently own.

The biggest problem was product differentiation. When E-M1X came out, Olympus was loud to remind that this was not a successor of E-M1 Mark II, that it sat side by side with E-M1 Mark II as both flagships at that time. This was utterly puzzling and confusing. It did have some extra features and improvements but many were hoping for a true successor, which was expected to be released in 2019 (3 years after E-M1 Mark II). Then E-M1 Mark III and E-M5 Mark III both came too late, when everyone else like Sony and Fuji were releasing new cameras left right center non-stop! Knowing that E-M1X was not a replacement/successor for E-M1 Mark II, Olympus never set the expectations high for E-M1X sales. It was the same strategy as Nikon D4/D5 or Canon 1DX series, these don't sell by large volumes. To say that the E-M1X sold according to expectation was correct. I personally wish that OIympus could have put more emphasis on E-M1 Mark III, pouring more R&D resources into it and release it earlier instead of diluting their products. Even the differentiation on E-M5/E-M10 lines was quite poorly done. The peak of Micro Four Thirds era for Olympus was during the E-M1 and E-M1 Mark II, they really had strong presence in the mirrorless world, with faster and more reliable AF, more complete lens collection, mature set of features (5-Axis IS, EVF, Live Composite, etc). Instead of continuing to push and create a truly "wow" E-M1 Mark III, the E-M1X seems to be the unnecessary detour, which I strongly believe ultimately led to their downfall as well. This was especially true when just after E-M1 Mark II you see all other competition catching up and pushing their boundaries, while Olympus basically stayed stagnant.
@philipswan10162 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it was an unnecessary detour, I think it opened up the world of wildlife & sports photography for so many. I'm often surrounded by wildlife photographers carrying large lenses & egoes at quadruple the price and less reach. Every X owner is praying for the mark 2 with everything the om-1 has but with the tracking greatly improved. Having said that the X as is can deliver amazing photos if put in the right hands.

E-M1 II was IMHO a failure by many points: 1) they went to too large body from E-M1, that was great in size (people should learn to control their pinky properly) and moved some controls like flipped 2x2 switch annoyingly to left from right. 2) They implemented horrible idea to include a side swiveling display hinge that was done by Canon in the 90's only because it was impossible for technical reasons to make display hinges smaller. It is useless for vloggers as you can't see anything from proper distance from camera as it is so tiny screen at 3-4 meters (and you should never anyways look the screen but the lens when filming!). The best screen ever made is in X-T2 and X-T3. That rear screen is perfect for photographers, you get quick up/down tilt for 90% of your shots, and then up/down tilt for 10% of your shots. There is no need to see anything from the front. What Olympus should have seriously done, was to push WiFi connectivity be better to smartphone so you can quickly and easily get the Live View on phone from camera and allow use that smartphone as remote control for camera for vloggers and so on. But that connectivity was too slow to make each time, it should be a bluetooth kind level where it is constantly connected to phone and when ever you would open Olympus I.S app it would be connected in second or two to camera for Live View. 3) They didn't understand to push more the idea of using dual-dials for AF point movement, to playback control, almost everything in camera to be controlled with two dials. 4) They implemented horrible black and white menu system, that doesn't make sense as they removed the excellent categorization from A to J. A best menu system ever created for digital cameras even today... (that doesn't mean there wasn't couple items that could have been moved to other group). 5) They didn't really push further with the firmware updates, like what they did with E-M1. The E-M1 was first ILC that received actually huge improvements via firmware. And no, Fuji wasn't that. Fuji cameras were released half-working. Many has already forgotten example how X-T1 was released without one of their physical Fn buttons working at all! And they fixed it with one of early firmware updates! Their 80-90% of firmware updates are to fix problems, to add features that others had from launch. The E-M1 III was useless compared to E-M1 II, as that could have very well been mostly firmware update to II. 6) They really dropped the lens category by going again for heavier and larger ones. f/1.2 lenses ain't really required. The f/1.8 are already great in size and all. Being just 1.1 stops slower than f/1.2 (0.5 + 2/3). Olympus should have quickly refresh their 12 mm, 17 mm, 25 mm, 45 mm and 75 mm to match each others and drive prices low. Meaning make them all look like a 45 mm f/1.8 and 25 mm f/1.8. No metal, just good plastic with nice design like in those two. And then add something that so many wanted to see, a 7 mm fixed focal length lens. And of course pair the 60 mm with 120 mm macro lens, as they released the 30 mm f/3.5 macro with it, so you have 2x field of view difference between each lens from 30 - 60 - 120 mm. And release much earlier their 100-400 mm f/5-6.3 IS when the E-M1 got out. 7) The final nail in the coffin was E-M1X idea to move away from shutter release button not anymore centered middle of front dial. The front dial was best there was in E-M1 and even in E-M1 II, as in E-M5 II, E-M10 II and like where you quickly got to adjust it. But now it being separate was just slowing down the camera operation, weakening the grip and slowing severely process to get the shot, failing to capture the moments as you needed to move finger to make adjustments. The Canon and Nikon has always been horrible in this matter, and Olympus just was need to go follow their bad designs - again. The Olympus didn't really do much at all after E-M1 II. They again just started to hangout, what clearly was implying that there is in-corporation conflict with what to do.

Revolutionised my wildlife photography, for insect macros I no longer stop and hide from rain showers anymore + handheld focus stacking works brilliantly. For birds I get amazing reach and image quality with the 300F4 + 2x teleconverter; in my tests it's far far better than the naked lens and cropping.

I have no idea if there's an OM-1x in the works, but it would make sense as OMDS aim for the upper end of the outdoor and wildlife photography market. After all, the body design and tooling is all paid for, they just need to stick the OM-1 guts in it (with dual processors perhaps) and it's done.

I was an early adopter of the EM1-X. Paid full price and don’t regret it for a second. Great camera. I now own the EM1-X, EM1-III, and the OM-1. As you said the OM-1 is better in every way, except for handling. I still much prefer the EM1-X, especially with bigger lenses. The build of the EM1-X just feels better. The card door is SO much better than the others. The battery slide is SO much better. I sure wish OM Systems would release a Firmware update for the EM1-X that would allow the ability to do updates to custom settings (C1, C2,….) on the fly like the EM1-III and the OM-1. As is, you have to go save updated settings manually. Seems like an easy firmware update. Now that I have two other bodies with Starry Night AF, I don’t care about getting that function in the EM1-X as much. I’m with ya….. If they come out with an OM-1X, I’ll buy it instantly.

You are very spoiled at the high end with firmware updates. I had an E-PL9 and had to trade it in for an E-PL10 to get electronic shutter in all modes rather than locked in to a special mode with the awful warm white balance. The white walls in every indoor shot with electronic shutter looked like the den of a heavy smoker, a bit like an office in the good old days. It would seem to have been firmware fixable but with the entry level and compacts as a rule firmware will only be for bug fixes if sales are hurting and a new body needed with its new irritants to contend with and often featuring downgrades nowadays. The review industry entirely missed this major improvement in the E-PL10 and EM10 iV with the little interest they have in the basic stuff and anything outside of video nowadays. Fuji seem to be able to put feature enhancements in with firmware but then struggle with IBIS at an affordable level so nowhere is safe and m43 will do. Given that it seems clear that no size of sensor over 4/3 can be stabilised for less than a £1,000 m43 is definitely where I have settled down and I am ignoring what goes on elsewhere. It is rather a relief after my previous gear obsession and the last Fuji body has gone and is not missed.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts -- nothing crazy about your analysis at all. At that time I owned two E-M1 Mkll's and two E-M1 Mkl's -- and a ton of lenses. All of those had been used for my pro work. I would have gotten the E-M1x right then, but Covid put a real hitch in things and after having several big corporate conferences cancelled, I decided to retire from pro work, and I also decided to wait on the M1x. In late September 2021 Olympus had an 'Outlet Store' sale and I was able to snatch up a refurbished, brand new condition E-M1x with 236 shutter clicks -- I'm convinced it was new -- for $1,300. A few days back 'Get Olympus' had another Outlet sale and they had another refurbished E-M1x priced at $1,104 -- I almost bought it and now wish I had, but some other lucky/smart person snatched it up after a couple days. The E-M1x is the best camera I have ever owned.

I shot canon pro digital bodies for many years and a friend at a local camera shop back in Michigan talked me into Micro 4/3 because I can't carry that heavy gear around anymore at 67 years old. The e-m1x reminds me of the EOS-1D pro bodies I was using and the image quality is excellent, I don't expect to have full frame image quality, but the images I have got from this camera has amazed me and with the latest firmware updates, the new features are nice with bird tracking and better autofocus. I mainly shoot birds and wildlife here in Florida and with the 40-150 2.8 Pro lens and MC14 convertor, this is a great lens combo and has served me well, anyone looking to move into Micro 4/3 should seriously look at the e-m1x and now that the price has come down, this camera is a great deal, even in 2023.

I agree in just about everything you said. I traded my 1X in to pay for my OM-1 but if I could have afforded to keep the 1X I would have. I purchased my 1X just after launch, I had the second copy to come through my LCS, after handling the first one. The ergonomics, for me, are simply superb. Does it have its faults? For sure; the EVF is complete pants, tracking and bird detect (I'm mostly a wildlife photographer) are not far behind but I loved using it. Also I'm lucky to have the 150-400 and the 1X balanced perfectly with it. The OM-1 is technically a better camera for sure, the IQ is improved all be it marginally, it blows my mind with its tracking and bird detect capabilities, and the EVF is worth the upgrade on its own IMHO. However it's not a patch on the 1X for ergonomics. This winter will be interesting because accessing the recessed wheels with gloves on I suspect will be tricky as just one example. Also the build quality, while good, is not quite up to the same standard. I really hope they do bring out an OM-1X and it successfully melds the two cameras. The one issue is I've now blown my photography budget for a good while. A little side rant (at OM Systems). I noticed the other day you have the grip for the OM-1 you lucky so and so,. Here in the UK and I think in Europe they are like hen's teeth, I still haven't received mine yet despite ordering it at the same time as the body way back in the early spring. Batteries are a similar issue.

I bought one new in the run out phase and got a great deal. It's one of those cameras that if you like it then you really like it. Handling, build quality and just the way it feels in the hand are outstanding in my view, in fact regardless of budget I've never picked up a digital camera that beats it for handling and tactile feel and you have to spend serious $$$$$$s to get anything near it. Despite the sensor seeming to be unimpressive I find it gives excellent results with some excellent features and functionality. There is a great range of high quality lenses which blend great optical quality, build and compactness. Although it's a big camera by MFT standards it balances supremely well and really doesn't feel big, while the lenses are very compact. Overall if people can look past the pixel count it's a wonderful camera which still delivers the necessary results.

Like the Edsel, which was a very good car, the E-M1X came on market at a time when there were better alternatives. I agree with Robin Wong but would add that this camera did not follow the MFT profile of being small, light, but loaded with advanced features. What it did offer was a more balanced camera body for the large, heavy 300mm and 150-400mm lenses. And it offered more battery life. In that, it succeeded for a very small group of photographers who went after auto racing and birds in flight. Also good for wildlife. At $3,000, it was over priced. If it had hit the market at $2,000, I think it would have done better. Also factored in was the financial condition of Olympus at the time. They simply did not have the revenue to build in more advanced features to separate it from the E-M1 mk II. With the advancements in technology that are now available and the R&D revenue of the new owners behind them, I think OMD should take another look at making an OM-1x. When you look at who has been successful at designing great autofocus, it falls to Sony and Canon. They both have enormous R&D working for them. I think there is a market for a really good MFT pro camera. I know us old guys would love to shed all the heavy Nikon, Canon, and Sony FF gear we tote around now.

I straight to OM-1, but there is one distinct feature that the E-M1X has that no other Oly/OM-D µ43 cameras do, which is the inclusion of field sensors and especially a GPS receiver, which apart from position also provides time of day information. Maybe it's a size / body construction constraint, but I'd really love to have this. Sounds trivial, but having to remember to have the date/time set on a camera or any device for that matter, in 202x, and having a firmware update reset it, is a little bit silly.

OMDS needs to focus on what will make them profitable. The OM-1 seems like a home run because it was a major upgrade that appeals to the widest range of the target audience, which is a fairly narrow segment of the overall camera market. The EM1x always seemed to me like it would appeal to a narrow segment of an already narrow segment of the market. Can that make them money? I have no idea but I love OMDS cameras and want them to be successful. My first thought when they got sold was that they need to reduce their camera offerings and really focus on their target audience with the remaining product line. Just MHO.

Em5 mark 3 was an underwelming release, I would not compare any sales with that particular model. I personally was really looking forward to upgrade my original EM5 to EM5 mark 3, but when I saw plastic body and mini USB I bought EM1 mark 3 instead, and Olympus got lucky with me, not everyone upgraded, some jumped ship to another brands, like Fuji and Sony, those two became really popular at that time. As for EM1x I think Olympus released that camera too soon. It had to be released with 150-400 lens and with a stacked sensor. Puting an old sensor in their new flagship camera didn't bring much confidence.

@@TheNarrowbandChannel My reading of the market is that now that the OM-1 is in stock with many local retailers, E-M1X owners are dumping their E-1MX while they still fetch these prices, probably trading them in too with retailers directly - that's how these bodies end up with retailers. I pondered long and hard if I wanted to "upgrade" to an OM-1 from my E-M1 III, but decided against it. Not at that price point. I'd have to replace my batteries with new batteries which are much more expensive than what they add in extra capacity, I'd need a new grip which is also much more expensive than the previous grip - and I am still not convinced the OM-1 will really offer me that much more than what I have already. I played with it in the store. Yes, it's faster. The viewfinder is amazing, that is THE single most obvious improvement over previous models. But the image quality? In most situations I would not notice. Instead of dumping that money on the OM-1, I found a good deal on a used, mint 300mm f4, cheaper than what the OM-1 sells for. That said, I do agree that the E-M1X at its current price point provides EXCELLENT value still.

I bought my E-1 new in 2005, I believe. I worked at an independent camera store in Canada, and contacted the Olympus Canada rep who told me he could sell me one at Olympus employee pricing, which was below dealer cost... but I was better off buying it retail at Henry's, because they had ordered too many, and were blowing them out with the 14-45mm lens from the E-300 for even less than Olympus Canada could sell the body only to their own employees for.

I think the numbers of DPR are pretty biased towards heavy geared still photographers, so the EM1X is positioned in the statistics better than smaller cameras or video gear like the GH5. I also think the EM1X was made because Olympus had the new sensor in the E-M1-II and after this was out they developed new functionality based on the sensor speed. LiveND, HHHR and other high speed functions needed a faster processor but the one for the E-M1-III wasn't ready. So they build the larger camera with two old processors and brought the functionality a year earlier on the market. The heavy geared wildlife and people photographers like to use vertical grips anyway so the camera is ideal for them. The E-M1-III with vertical grip can do more or less the same but it came a year later. The situation today is kind of similar. The sensor in the OM-1 can do much more than the OM-1 is using. It can do 4k120p and the OM-1 could have more high speed multishot functions. OM-systems has stated that 4k120p couldn't be done in this small body. To me this looks like an OM1X would make even more sense than the EM1X.

Another thing: how you explain Olympus USA giving the EM1X at the same price as the EM1.3 (i.e., free) with the purchase of their three top pro zooms? Why would the EM1X be given at the same value of the EM1.3 when it clearly cost more to manufacture and has a higher MSRP? In either case history will tell. I give OMDS from now to until end of next year to produce a successor for the EM1X. I that doesn't happen, I think it's fair to conclude this camera flopped and the line is dead for if it was selling so well they would have kept it going.
@TheNarrowbandChannel2 жыл бұрын
That is pretty easy. They already recovered their costs on development of the EM1x so they are just selling it now for the cost of manufacturing it. I did outline that in the video. Cameras of this caliber have about 5 year development cycles if we compare it to other companies. So not next year but 2024 should tell us.
@Raist3db2 жыл бұрын
@@TheNarrowbandChannel This makes no. sense, and no it's not "pretty easy"- they are selling the EM1X at a higher price than the EM1.3. Giving the camera at the same price of EM1.3 doesn't makes sense. Just because you recouped your investment doesn't mean you make a higher priced model be effectively the same price as a lower priced model. IF that logic made sense why not just do that for all pricing options? The market is moving faster. This camera has many outdated things at this point that at that price tier should be better - EVF in particular. But ok, I would be willing to wait until 2024 and come back :-). Maybe they keep it. I got the E-M1mk3 instead, but i still feel tempted to buy a used X. I wish OM System make a mark 2 of the E-M1X. With Three, yes 3 truepic X processors. A camera that would be a true pro camera that is faster than any competitor in borh handling, AF and AI/computational photo. Where the high res photos could be taken extremely quickly to eraze the problem with slow moving objects (not cars or things like that). If all 9 or 15 shots for the highres photo would be taken within say half a second. The processors maybe could freeze objects that move in like 25 km/h.

When they said it sold in line with expectations, it could be that their expectations were low. The E-M1X is a niche camera, and they may have created it just to placate a few of their most loyal customers. However, it's a particularly odd niche for Olympus / OM System because compactness is a major selling point for Micro Four Thirds. If you don't mind the extra size and weight of a camera with an integrated vertical battery grip, you can go with a full-frame camera as long as the heavy lenses don't bother you either.

I think the EM1X was designed and produced for the photographing Olympics in Japan. We know that the Olympics were muted due to COVID and that Olympus never had the opportunity to introduce the camera the way they wanted to. The EM1X is very different from any other recent body type that Olympus or OM Digital Solutions (OMDS) has produced. Olympus has always appealed to nature photographers where equipment weight was paramount. The EMiX is more of a venue/studio type of beast. I suspect many Olympus users saw the EM1X as a very advanced version on the MKII and bought into it waiting to see what the next iteration of the top model would look like. The body types reverted back to the smaller footprint with the mkIII and eventually the more advanced OM 1 . The next top of the line release will be interesting.

Interesting thoughts. However i doubt that there will be a successor for the E-M1X at all. Since the carve out strategy of OMDS has been changed. Looking on the marketing they are aiming for outdoor category, which deserve more mobile cameras than the E-M1X can offer. In addition a camera like the E-M1X is done for a lifespan of at least 5 years. Look at the 1Dx or Nikon D1 category. Those cameras are replaced after 5 years.
@TheNarrowbandChannel2 жыл бұрын
Michael your input is always appreciated. Especially as an OM Ambassador or is it Educator. They keep changing these things. With their switch to wildlife over sports photography, there are not to many requirements for those things that really change other then the AI used in focusing for them. One clarification. You said 5 years its been out. I thought it was 3 years. The camera was launched in 2019 July 15th. That is more like 3 years. If you are right about development cycles though we need to wait possibly 1 to 2 years. By then we cold have a new sensor.
@michaelguthmann2 жыл бұрын
@@TheNarrowbandChannelYou are right the E-M1X is on the market since 3 years. What I want to say is that this kind of camera is normally planned for a lifecycle of 5 years. See the flagship models from Canon, Nikon and others, which are replaced roughly every 5 years. Therefore a discontinuation after 3 years indicates that there will be no successor for this camera especially as OM Digital Solution changed their strategy since they have launched the E-M1X in 2019 and are now focusing rather on the outdoor category than on the professional sports and studio photography.
@Fadeslayer2 жыл бұрын
@Michael Guthmann I think outdoor and wildlife photographers can benefit for a more rugged, strong and good-spaced full size body, especially when it is so light as the EM1x. I sold it for the OM-1 only for its subpar autofocus, otherwise I would have ADDED the OM-1 and let EM1II go. With big lenses it is far more comfortable to use 1x than OM-1, even with a grip which does not replicate all features and have a different button placement. If focus is (in part) wildlife then considering the whole package we are still talking about a small size respect to the competitors. And if small size is all that matters, then Oly has failed too, because body side there are already full frame bodies smaller than om-1...

@@TheNarrowbandChannel two sides of the same coin personally if you prefer vertical grips get the 1X, but for the micro four thirds “philosophy” the 1mk3 is better. Ultimately the photos will look the same.

@@TheNarrowbandChannel unfortunately starry sky was a em1mk3 and up exclusive I’m guessing this was so owners of it felt better about not having ai autofocus… for my photography I prefer having a lighter body and starry sky af, but not everyone is me if you shoot sports the 1X is definitely the better choice, om1 more so, for basic stills and light sport and wildlife the 1mk3 is perfect balance of price and features. To me the iq boost in the om1 isn’t worth the cost difference, plus the em1 mk3 is technically the last all Olympus camera before jip so that’s something special

I don't care what they say, I love BOTH of my EM1Xs!

Here is to the OM1x we dream about :)

Finally got mine in mint condition. Thought I‘d just collect it, but my hands grab it more often than the OM-1 😂 they don’t care for the EVF 😂

Yes its very hard for me to give up mine now. I still find excuses to use it when I do not kneed the performance.

The EM1x was a professionally sized, priced and specified camera using a format hardly any professionals use. That limited its attraction to wildlife photographers who preferred m43, wanted a body to balance long lenses, and were prepared to pay a premium for it. That's a tiny demographic. I suspect it was the final nail in Olympus's coffin.

It's not that small. People photographing nature count in tens of millions worldwide, nowadays, so no real small niche but a good target. Usually wiling to spend a bit more than almost all the other categories (except for sport photography)
@borderlands66062 жыл бұрын
@@Fadeslayer Yes, but how many of them shoot in m43 and choose to use a large body? In my experience they use larger formats and pay the weight penalty, or smaller micro four thirds bodies for compactness.

@@borderlands6606 I would prefer an OM-X for my wildlife photography. I think they could slim it down to 900g and a half/full cm less size, with more than double OM-1 powerhouse inside (maybe adding a couple of "smartphone-like" SoCs to work on AI and computational features, instead of a second TruePic X, if that gives us more computational power), I would shell out 3 grands for that (which I wouldn't spend on a full-sized FF body, that BTW cost far more than 3k), a single body with no weak joints, like a grip gives

Just snagged one for $600 - excited to shoot on it!

What a bargain.

Since it was the first with object ai, I wouldn't call it a failure. It was built for something, just not really for astro 😊 and, evolution has to start somewhere, right 😊 who knows, maybe om-1x will come with astro and macro ai included the om-1 features 😉

Olympus need to rename all their cameras. It don’t need to make it so unnecessarily long to sound sophisticated. It only confused. OMD Em 1x. Luckily didn’t follow by Mark ? WTF
@TheNarrowbandChannel2 жыл бұрын
This has been a very common thing to joke about. I used to make fun of Canon for this then the OMD Em1 Mark II line came out and I had to eat my words lol. They seam to have improved this though with the simpler OM1 and OM5 names.

It has been awhile since JIt created OM Systems. We see what they are doing with the line. The same as Toshiba. Milking the brand and name. The new company has a repurposed FF lens , a 90mm slow lens and the new body is faster. No 1x or I suspect it’s not even in the plans. very disappointed but my m4/3 kit is doing just fine

I think you Mean the Vio laptops?
@ThePNWRiderWAАй бұрын
@ yes. They were a premium laptop that had many cutting edge features and then JIP came in and focused primarily on just Japan and innovation is minimal. I see the same thing with OM systems. They will partner with sigma and others to produce lens for them and minimal innovation on bodies. The 150-400 and 90mm were both on the old Olympus roadmap.
