Thank you so much, Rob. I have been using Olympus cameras (my last: the OM20) for the first part of my life, then didn't have time for my hobby for the longest time, got lazy and used my i-phone. i'm now retired and discovered during my recent visit to Yellowstone that the i-phone really doesn't cut it. So, sticking with what i know to be a decent camera, I just got the Olympus OMD M10 II. To say it mildly, their manual stinks. And while there are any number of videos out there, they all assume you already know what the camera can do, and what all the functions stand for. You are the first and only one who starts at the very beginning. THANK YOU. you are opening a new world in cameras for me. i knew i had a good camera, and you showed me what i can do with it. You are patient, explain clearly, don't assume anything, and walk us through it! Please keep making tutorial videos. As i get further into your tutorials, i may make suggestions or ask questions.

These beginner series are great Rob. I have mainly been shooting in manual, thinking it was sort of cheating if I used the other modes. What you are saying really is, make full use of your camera. The manufacturers put all the modes and settings in their cameras to improve our photography. If the technology is there, then use it.
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
Long as you understand what the camera is doing, it's not cheating. If you really want to go hardcore, you could always try full manual slr film camera with no meter. :)

I recently purchased an E-M10 Mark II and your beginner videos have been very helpful. Even though I am not new to photography (I used to shoot with film and do my own development and printing of photos) I am relatively new to digital photography. I am on Part 4 of your videos now and can't wait to finish the rest. The videos have given me so much more confidence in shooting with my new digital camera and enabled me to have more fun rather than being frustrated with the complexity of all the overwhelming menus and settings. Your explanations are so much better than the Olympus user manual (which I am reading cover to cover). By the way: I even watched your video where you explain why you selected the E-M10 Mark II vs. the E-M5 Mark II and found myself echoing your conclusions. Totally agree!! Not worth 2x the price $$ for my shooting needs (but I acknowledge that it maybe totally worth it for others though). Thank you for taking the time to do these tutorials and I look forward to many more. You are a natural teacher and have a great gift for explaining concepts very clearly. Love your equipment recommendation links too. Definitely adding to my wish list there. Thank you Rob!

Thank you so much for doing a beginner series. I purchased my E-M10 Mark II last month and hadn't used a "real" camera since the late 80's in a photography class in school. With only vague memories of basic terminology, I binge watched a lot of your previous E-M10 Mark II videos and still felt in over my head since my foundation is still weak. Consider me very interested in starting from scratch. I really enjoy your clear style of educating with no undercurrent of condescension or gear elitism. These are very useful. This is a very complicated camera, which I knew before purchasing. I'm not a beginner, so some of your recommendations don't work for me. No problem Rob, I have got a quick question if that’s ok? Just picked up the E-M10 mk2 and it’s my first real camera. I notice that there is a constant humming from the camera like a very quiet fan. Is this normal? Also the battery life seems quite short. Trying to follow along to your vids and the battery drained quite quickly. Guess it’s because the live view screen on all the time when playing with settings?
@RobTrek5 жыл бұрын
@@davidforrest7427 Hi. The humming is the sensor image stabilization and is normal. It is always on, even if you turn stabilization off. It has to stay on to hold the sensor in a static position. Battery life will drain with live view on constantly, especially if following along. You'd be lucky to get 1 hour on an Olympus original battery. When out taking pictures there are some techniques to extend battery life, but generally you should get 2 hours of shooting done, so carry spares.

Thanks for confirming HDR shuts out shutter delay. Exposure compensation was already available in my C-2500L and D-400 ZOOM, but buried in the menu then in 2000. In the film days it was called 'varying shutter speed and/or aperture'. On the pocket zooms I reduce EV(variation) to bring back color saturation, since the long zoom lenses get internal flare. The short zoom kit lenses on the E-M10 versions just about do away with the flare, hence EV=0 has proved safe for me so far. Less flare also allows me to retrieve both highlight and shadow detail in PP on the E-M10, which I cannot get back on the pocket zooms SH-1 and SH-2.
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your experience. Understanding the causes to quality issues is the key to finding the solution. Sometimes it's a limitation of the gear and you have no choice but to upgrade.
@HenryFalkner6 жыл бұрын
As to upgrading - the E-M10 Mark II 2 lens kit is gains on the swings and losses on the round-abouts, compared to my remaining pocket zooms SH-50 and SH-1. I need the full range from 28 mm to 600 mm in cruise ship arrival- and departure videos - at what point do I change the lens? Right now the 14-150 lens is out of my reach. Thanks for telling me how to activate the digital zoom. I had not scrolled through all the Fn3 options.
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Do you have the E-M10 Mark I? If so, you're best bet is to get the 75-300mm which is at 150-600 equivalent. I'm not aware of any lens that covers 28-600. Check this website for lens choices www.four-thirds.org/en/microft/lense.html

Rob. Can't tell you how pleased I am to have discovered your tutorials. As an old dog trying for the first time to learn new tricks these have been very helpful. On the exposure compensation video the aperture is set at 1.7. So I either missed the change in lens from the kit lens that came with my camera, 14-42mm 3.5-5.6 or I missed the instruction on how to get the aperture that open. I suspect that you are using a different lens but wanted to check.

I got my hand on a Mark III this Black Friday and I'm surprised how relevant this tutorial still is. Just a few things can't be adapted, like the programming of the Fn buttons. They are far more limited on a Mk III, when it comes to their options. For example, you can't choose HDR, and the Quickmenu is now fixed on the former Fn3. There is no Fn3 on the Mk III. Nonetheless a very good tutorial series for a photography newb like me.

Hi. I replied to your email.
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
I think for your safari, you will use your 75-300 more. the 12-100 is too short to capture animals at a great distance. As for the light changing, use the same exposure settings as in the beginner video part 1, and the focus settings used in the birds in flight. Aperture priority, lens wide open at lowest f/stop. Group focus 9 points, C-AF, face detect off, Release "Off", Shutter speed on continuous Low anti-shock, auto-iso 25600-200, and center weighted metering. For fast moving animals, try panning. You may also want to switch to shutter priority, with 1/1000sec shutter speed. Birds stick with 1/2000th. Hope that helps.

Nice one! There’s no need for 2 stops, I’d marry Polina right after one stop of the exposure compensation.

Thanks Rob, seen this 3 episodes over and over again. My english is a little bad, so i repeating every moment. I may have missed how i aktivate the silent shutter. I wonder if you could explain that slovely, and also explain when to use it and when you do not use it. Best regards. Ulf Eriksson Sweden

Great video as usually.. You mentioned "Nothing is blinking". The red part for the highlights and the blue for the shadows. How can I set up. Which video shows that.. Otherwise congrats... Love your videos and learned a lot. Thanks

Rob, do you think you will be doing a segment on downloading and basic editing with the Olympus viewer 3 software that came with the camera? Also some of the prompts when reviewing photos on LCD screen can be confusing. Please consider and thank you.

Yes, I will follow up with some basic editing in Olympus Viewer. Thanks for the idea of reviewing the prompts. I never thought about doing a video for that.

Saludos.
@RobTrek5 жыл бұрын
@diegogonzalez-ed9yb5 жыл бұрын
@@RobTrek Gracias Rob por tu respuesta. ¿ por que recomiendas la m10-II que la m10-III? la m10-III lleva sensor mejorado ¿ no será mejor que la m10 II?
@RobTrek5 жыл бұрын

Hi Bob! Thanks for your videos Bob, i noticed that when I'm in A mode i can not control the exposure, it only appear the A and the speed, if i want to change the exposure i need to change to another setting (M,, P, S) how can i add that to my A mode? Thanks
@RobTrek3 жыл бұрын
Go into Menu "B Button/Dial" --> Dial Function --> A . Then assign the front dial to FNo. and the rear dial to +/-.

I really like your videos. I've been watching them for a few months now. I like being able to set the Myset settings. But I have a question. Is there any way to save the Mysets to the SD card or maybe back them up to a computer?
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
I have to find my usb cable, but some models from olympus let you save the mysets to your computer via their update software.

Hi- nice video. Do you use any screen protector for the OMD EM ii LCD?
@RobTrek6 жыл бұрын
No screen protector, but thinking about getting one.
@CraigCasterline6 жыл бұрын
I use one and the screen seems just as responsive as it was without it. So, I definitely suggest it.

So in the camera what is being adjusted?? is the sensitivity of the sensor being changed...like the ISO would do? or is the shutter speed changing?
@RobTrek5 жыл бұрын
Depends on what mode you're in and if autoiso is on. So if "A" mode, shutter speed is adjusted, in "S" mode aperture is adjusted, and if autoiso is on, some combination.

@@RobTrek So is the camera going beyond what you can do manually, or is it the same as you can do?...What I mean is..if you set all your settings to the best you can...and then use EB, will it go beyond the setting you can do manually? I mean can, using EB force the camera to do more than you can set manually?
@RobTrek5 жыл бұрын
Not at all. The limits of the camera remain the same. It's simply a convenience tool.

@@RobTrek I am just now after using my Sony A57 for a week..seeing why the Olympus would have been a wiser choice...and the choice is...variety....or more specific...the different choice's you have for different type of photos or options I meant to say...And you made me see the difference..dont get me wrong..the Sony is a very, very nice camera..but it sticks to the DSLR rules for the minimum set of standards, and requires alot more manual ways to get the photos your camera has built in...

@@RobTrek If you want to do special, or in my words, cool things, then the Olympus is the one to get..The Panasonic FZ70 does a few things your Olympus does, but not all that you have to chose from...It all about the fun I know..but it does help to play around with the settings and enjoy your camera once in a while..right?????
